USBC AFFIRMS DECISION TO REVOKE

APPROVAL OF TWO MOTIV BALLS

USBC CONVENTION HEADS TO RENO, NEVADA IN 2018

MEMBERSHIP DEPT.

The United States Bowling Congress has affirmed the decision to revoke USBC approval of the Motiv brand Jackal and Jackal Carnage bowling balls. Motiv re-quested an appeal of the March 15, 2016 decision to revoke approval of the balls for nonconfor-mance with current specifications and requirements in the USBC Equipment Specifications and Certifica-tions Manual. USBC testing showed a significant per-centage of the Jackal and Jackal Carnage exceeded the maximum 0.060” differential radius of gyration standard specification during spot checks of balls in the field. The USBC Equipment Specifications Com-mittee heard the appeal, reviewed the facts and circumstances, and has affirmed the revocation de-cision: The Jackal and Jackal Carnage remain on the USBC non-conforming equipment list and are unap-proved for use in USBC-certified competition.

The 2018 USBC Convention and Annual Meeting will take place at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Ne-vada from April 23-26. The USBC Board of Directors approved the 2018 convention site, which will keep the annual convention in the same host city as a USBC Championships event. The 2018 USBC Women’s Championships will be held at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno. The convention is scheduled to end on a Thursday, as feedback from delegates showed having the convention run on a Monday-through-Thursday schedule was preferred. The 2017 USBC Con-vention will take place in Las Vegas, site of the 2017 USBC Open Championships. The USBC Convention and Annual Meeting brings together delegates of USBC associations from across the country who take part in seminars, presentations of national awards and scholarships, and legislative sessions. Go to BOWL.com/Convention for more information about the USBC Convention.

Kris D. Rudorf of Mechanicsville, Md., recently was reinstated to USBC membership and again becomes eligible to compete in USBC leagues and tourna-ments with all of the attendant membership priv-leges.

Do you know your rules?

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE • WILLIE GRAVES JR.

The winter bowling season for many of us is about to begin or al-ready has begun. To me, it is very important as a league bowler to be aware of your league rules and by-laws as well as knowing some key rules found in the USBC 2016-2017 Playing Rules book.

I encourage each of you to attend your league organizational meet-ing held prior to starting your win-ter season. This is a very important meeting since it will establish your league officers, will formulate your league bylaws, and set your league fees and due dates for the winter season. Your vote and voice does count at these meetings, and each of you certainly has a right to be heard.

Some key rules of which you should be aware and understand to have an enjoyable and fun bowling season include: Absentee scores (Rule 105) Entering averages (Rule 118c) Handicaps (Rule 100g) League fees (Rule 121) League fee arrearages (Rule 110a) Legal lineups (Rule 109a) Roll-offs and Playoffs (Rule 113) Postponements (Rule 111) Prize/Award Fund (Rule 117) Substitutes (Rule 107c)

Tardy players (Rule 109c) Team rosters (Rule 104b) Vacancy scores (Rule 105)

These rules are well defined on the USBC Web site, BOWL.com. I highly recommend you take a closer look at these rules, for it will save your league from having to face issues during the bowling season. I also recommend that you use the app located at BOWL.com/MobileApp on your smart phone to have access to these rules at all times.

As a reminder, the NCAUSBCA 2016 Hall of Fame Induction & Dinner Celebration will be held on Saturday, October 8 at the Bol-ling Air Force Base Officers Club on Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, and it should be a great and enjoy-able affair. Tickets are $40 and are now available for purchase from your lane representative or at the NCAUSBCA office.

As always, please send any ques-tions you may have to president @ncausbca.org or you may call the office at 301/499-1693. Have an enjoyable winter league season, and keep those bowling balls roll-ing for high scores.

MANAGER’S MEMO • RONALD McGREGOR

Info to knowSummer league averagesAll summer league final averages are now due at the association of-fice. These averages are often used for tournaments, and while they do not appear in the “book,” they are posted online at BOWL.com.

League organizational meetingIf you have been bowling for many years in the same league, your or-ganizational meeting should be short, as your rules are reflective of the situations that have caused you grief over the years. After the secretary/treasurer, lineage, and prize fees have been set and start/end dates been marked, there are some important items that should definitely be covered, including: No arrearages should be al-lowed—bowlers should be current as of the day of bowling. Some-times trying to be “nice” by letting folks slide will come back to haunt you. Use the motto, “If I have to pay, you have to pay,” and then you don’t have to worry about being ac-cused of playing favorites. Presidents must receive the bank statements and check them month-ly; this way, there’ll be some idea if the league funds are there once the prize fee is known. Also: appoint (1) an audit committee to check and verify the funds at least half-way through the season; and (2) a prize committee, and check its submis-sions for accuracy before passing them out for the members to vote. You may be surprised how often leagues find out the winning prize list was incorrect at payoff time. Secretaries should have every league member fill out a member-ship application and collect ap-

propriate fees; submit the league application and cards to the asso-ciation office within 30 days from Week 1; and submit awards to the NCAUSBCA office within 20 days.

As a reminder, we cannot pro-cess awards until your league has been processed, so please submit the league application promptly. Don’t forget to review the league roster upon receipt to ensure all of your members are correctly listed.

Sanction feesIt’s still $21 for standard member-ships, $11 for state and local, and $10 for local only. Memberships are good through summer 2017. A Basic membership is $11 and is only good for the Basic league for which the membership is purchased.

AwardsThe local awards program has been enhanced for youths and adults. Among the additional adult pin awards are League Champion and 300 Series as well as 600-649 and 650-699 Series offerings. Average requirements have been relaxed to allow more bowlers to qualify for awards. Note that Basic members are not be eligible for awards. (A copy of the new adult awards appli-cation appears on page 2.)

TournamentsMost of the 2016-2017 tournament schedule has been set: Senior Tournament, October 15-16, 22-23 and 29-30 at Bowl Amer-ica Falls Church. Mixed Tournament in Support of BVL, December 10-11 at Bowl America Shirley. Youth Championship Tourna-

Chris M. Johnson started bowling duckpins at the age of 3 with his mother at Fair Lanes Capi-

tal Plaza. He found an early love of the game, and his moth-er allowed him to join a youth duckpin league three years later. His ultimate goal at that time was to win a tro-phy, and by the end of the season, he accomplished that goal and received his first trophy. He

continued to bowl duckpins until the age of 10 when Capital Plaza converted its duckpin lanes to tenpins, so he decided to make the change and bowl with the “big pins.”

Chris was one of the top bowlers during his youth career. In his high school years, he played football and other sports, but bowling was always his main priority. During this time, he won several cham-pionships, including the Maryland State Games, Virginia State Scratch Singles, two Mid-Atlantic Scratch Bowlers Association titles, the 1993 Vir-Mar District Invitational Tournament, and he was a member of the TNBA Eastern Regional Junior Team Champions—a team that went on to win the TNBA National Team Roll-off in Cincinnati, Ohio.

When Chris moved to adult competition, he had some early success bowling in local pot games and tournaments. With the encouragement of a friend, he decided to try a PBA regional tournament in Richmond, Va., as an amateur, and he cashed.

Over the next two years, he bowled three more PBA regional tournaments as an amateur, cashing in two and making the Top 16 match play finals in the other.

Around that time, he got laid off from his job,

so after having a talk with his father, and with the support of his family, he realized his childhood dream: He decided to get his PBA card and give the tour a chance. He failed to cash in his first two national PBA tournaments and realized he had a lot to learn, so he came home to practice.

Chris bowled a few more national events over the years but didn’t have much success. He was still a force at the regional level, however, and it showed as he won a PBA Southern Regional title in Raleigh, N.C., and he also had two other Top 5 appearances.

After living that life for a few years, he decided to drop his PBA card in 1998 and focus on bowl-ing high-dollar amateur tournaments. Chris found success on the amateur scene, as it was the per-fect balance of bowling high-profit tournaments while maintaining a home life.

Some of the major tournaments he has won in-clude the John Vargo Scratch Classic in Lumber-ton, N.J., the New Year’s Day Open in Staunton, Va., the TNBA Eastern Rhodman Classic (twice), and the 2006 TNBA National Bill Rhodman Classic Roll-off in Chicago. His biggest prize was a sec-ond-place finish at the True Amateur Toumament in Las Vegas that earned him $15,000.

Other accomplishments include: Six appearances in the NCAUSBCA Top 10 rank-

ings, including four times as No. 1. Three-time NCAUSBCA 600-700 Mixed Doubles

champion. Member of the Storm amateur staff since 2003. Two-time Lebanon Dutchman Scratch Doubles titlist. TNBA Eastern Region Mixed Doubles champion. Seven-time Virginia-Maryland Scratch Bowlers

Tour champion. First-place finish at Storm’s Opposite Attract

Mixed Doubles Tournament. Three Over/Under Doubles titles. Three-time ABC World Team Challenge champion.

outset, Mike was a “natural” at bowling and had the kind of free-and-easy, yet powerful, delivery that would attract a crowd of onlookers when he was on the lanes.

Mike has compiled an impressive list of bowling achievements within the Nation’s Capital Area. As a 16-year-old youth bowler, he won the 1990 Vir-Mar District YABA Invitational A Division title. As an adult, Mike has won our association’s Open Championship Scratch All-Events title on two dif-ferent occasions—in 2004 and 2014. He also was a member of the Scratch Team champions in the 2014 event. Other local victories include three Falls Church Scratch Tournament titles (1998-2000); two wins of the Falls Church Roger Tarr Scratch Shoot Out (1999, 2001); and the Bowl America Shirley Quick and Cheap Tournament (2003). Mike also has successfully participated in numerous Virginia State tournaments, winning the

Scratch All-Events title in 2006 and the Scratch Doubles event with partner Chhoeun To in 2012.

Mike, who has bowled in 16 USBC Open Champi-onships, has a high league average of 237, which he booked for 102 games in the 2012-2013 Falls Church Commercial league. He had a great all-around year that same season, rolling nine perfect games and six 800 series. To date, Mike has a total of 30 certified 300 games, which includes a Sport league 300 game, and 12 certified 800 series.

In addition to bowling in multiple leagues each season, Mike has assisted with coaching the youth league bowlers at Bowl America Falls Church. Whether bowling in leagues, participating in tour-naments, or helping his fellow bowlers, Mike pos-sesses the ability to maintain an even-keeled, positive mental outlook. His love for the sport of bowling is readily apparent.

In recognition of the superior bowling achieve-ments that he has accomplished, and in light of the positive image that he portrays, Michael J. Manolis is a most worthy addition to the NCA- USBCA Hall of Fame.

Local bowling historians looking back at the bowl-ing scene in the 1970s and early 1980s will no

doubt talk about one of the brightest stars that seemingly left as abruptly as he arrived. Bobby Michaelson grew bored with life as a suburban teenager and turned to bowl-ing as his escape. By his senior year, he was competing in the best men’s leagues in Northern

Virginia. Rolling in the legendary Virginia Masters at Fair Lanes Springfield, Bobby was among the greatest to have ever bowled in this area. Nearly all of the top local bowlers of the day bowled in the Virginia Masters in the 1970s, and at one point fairly late in the 1978-1979 season, the only bowl-er averaging 200 was Bobby.

To be eligible for the rankings, a youth must bowl a minimum of 60 total games. The divisions are determined by the youth bowler’s age as of July 31 of the current bowling season. Youths who bowl exclusively in leagues in “self-processing” centers are not eligible for the rankings.

ASK BOB • BOB KORTH

Getting ready for the new season; help for “chicken winging”

Q. The new season is about to start. What should I do to get ready for leagues and tournaments?

A. I hope you did not take the whole summer off. A summer league is useful to keep your game in some sort of shape.

Either way, first go to the pro shop and have them check your ar-senal to see if you need something new to fill in what you have. Get your other balls cleaned and the covers polished or sanded to again have all your bases covered.

Then get in a few games to make sure you can get some feel back for the game. Spend a hour or two on

spares; they are going to be your downfall if you have been off for awhile.

Last, if everything really feels

awful, ask for a lesson to give you something to work on. Anytime is a good time for a lesson, but the very best time is after a layoff. You have had a chance to forget many of the bad habits. Get a fresh start.

Q. I have been having a prob-lem with “chicken winging,” so I bought a new 16-pound ball to use instead of 14. I thought this would cure the problem, but it has not worked. Is there something else I need to do?

A. The weight of the ball has nothing at all to do with “chicken winging.” This is caused by turn-

ing the ball too early in the down-swing. When the hand turns early, the elbow flies out, and you have the chicken wing. This is caused by several things: You could be out of time, caus-ing early turn. You could be just trying too hard to put rotation on the ball. This can cause early turn.

For a cure, try this: Think ring finger—the one next to the little finger. Try to point at your mark with the pad of your ring finger. This will effectively keep your hand behind the ball longer.

If you don’t see a change with this, get to a coach in your area and have him/her look at your game and see if the problem can be found. Slow motion video can be a big help with this problem.

Q. I have bowled for the last few years in a center with wood lanes. This summer, the center converted to synthetic lanes. What is going to be the difference? Do I have to reload with bowling balls?

A. The difference generally is that wood lanes, being old and re-

Check Your Knowledge 1. Can league rules permit a team’s “sixth man” to bowl as a

substitute on another team when he is not scheduled to bowl on his own team?

2. What total qualifies a team for USBC National High Game recognition—1,275, 1,325, or 1,375?

3. Who is NCAUSBCA’s third vice president? 4. True or False: A league that starts after March 15 and before

August 1 is a summer league. 5. Is it a foul if a bowler’s ball activates the foul detection

device? 6. The term “turkey” is used when this number of successive

period in 2017.

The weight of the ball has nothing at all to do with “chicken winging.”

This is caused by turning the ball too early in the downswing.

quiring more maintenance, usu-ally have heads that are beat up. This means they are devoid of lane finish and very dark from oil that is soaked in. This makes the ball hook very early in a wood house. So bowlers have to learn to get the ball through the fronts.

You probably have been using weaker and more polished bowling balls to keep them from rolling too early. With your new synthetics, you will find the ball gets through the fronts much quicker and eas-ier, and the ball will maintain a lot more energy in the back of the lane. This will affect the shape that you are used to. Straighter in the front takes longer to get a read in the mids and a sharper hook in the back-end.

You may have to go to the pro shop and have them dull the ball some to get a better mid-lane read and to help calm down the reaction at the pins. You may want to get a couple of new balls, but I would start with what you have and just have the pro shop tweak the cover to get an idea of what you might want to buy.

in 1974, the young prodigy bowled in the 22nd Annual Virginia State Bowling Association Championship Tournament at Bowl America Shirley. He and partner Dave Hudson won the scratch doubles event, with Bobby scoring a 700 series.

That season, the 18-year-old left-hander was the No. 3-ranked bowler in the association. Bobby was recognized not only as one of the top bowlers in this area but also throughout Virginia, receiving several Virginia State Bowling Association “All Star Team” awards that annually honored the bowlers with the five highest league av-erages in the state.

He was a threat in pot games throughout the area—most notably the weekday afternoon sessions at Bowl America Silver Hill, which was “the place” for action in the area. Many of the area’s best bowlers, including professionals like Patty Costello and PA Ander-son, were known to frequent the Silver Hill afternoon competition.

He tried his hand in the Professional Bowlers Association, finishing fourth in a PBA Eastern Region tournament in York, Pa., in the late 1970s, later cashing on the national tour in the 1980 PBA Long Island Open in Garden City, New York. Disenchanted with the outlook as a professional bowler on the PBA Tour, he turned his sights to college. He left the area to attend Radford University and later the Univer-sity of Virginia, where he graduated with a B.A. degree in psychol-ogy in 1984. When he returned to the area, he resumed bowling with friends until a freak injury that damaged both wrists sidelined him for good.

Bobby appeared in the association’s Top 10 rankings four times, including the No. 1 position (202.02 average) for the 1978-1979 sea-son. The following season, he ranked No. 2 (201.85). He also fin-ished third in 1973-1974 (197.48) and ninth in 1977-1978 (190.51).

In 1980, Bobby won the area’s most prestigious event for top bowl-ers, the MWBPA (Metropolitan Washington Bowling Proprietors’ As-sociation) Invitational Tournament. He entered the stepladder finals as the top seed after leading the field wire-to-wire, defeating Hall of Famer Jim Robinette 193-174 for the title.

He recorded a perfect game at Bowl America Falls Church in 1986 and tossed numerous 700 series, including highs of 774 and 772 at McLean Bowling Center in the 1979-1980 season.

In 1973-1974, while only 17 years old, Bobby’s 211 average for 79 games in the Monday Night Mixed 5 league at Bowl America Fairfax was believed to be at that time the highest seasonal average ever held by a bowler in this association.

The history of bowling in the Nation’s Capital Area in the 1970s to early 1980s cannot be written without including the name of Bobby Michaelson on the first page. For what seemed far too short a peri-od, he was one of the best bowlers ever in this area and is, without question, an outstanding addition to the NCAUSBCA Hall of Fame.
