Your District Governor team has just returned from a Council of Governors

meeting that was held in Santa Maria. The hotel was sitting right on the

Santa Maria Airport. You might think that we had a wonderful flight. The

weather was perfect. Alas, we could not fly, the airplane needed an annual

inspection. Once a year an authorized airplane mechanic opens up the in-

spection plates, checks the compression of the engine, checks the spark

plugs and timing and generally makes sure the aircraft is still safe to fly.

Needless to say, we were off to Santa Maria by car.

This council of governors meeting was unique, we had extra days because

we had to make up for the cancelled August meeting that was scheduled

for Redding. Your 1st Vice District Governor, Elisa, and your 2nd Vice Dis-

trict Governor, Tyler, received training that they need to help them through

their governor year. The District Governors were tasked with making sure

all the business of the Multiple District 4 was addressed.

This year the sitting District Governors invited the 1st VDGs and the 2nd

VDGs to give their opinions on motions that would be voted on during the

business sessions. This has not happened in the past. Previous years only

the sitting District Governors were involved with the discussions that affect

the Lions of Multiple District 4. This was a great experience for us all.

The discussions were lively and some motions were changed to take into

consideration new ideas. I am proud to say that our District 4-C1, during

the last few years, has had free and open discussions by the cabinet. We

have always endorsed a cooperative governor team.

District 4-C1 Information & Club News

The council of governors has approved and launched a new website to inform non-Lions about what Li-

ons in California do. The current Multiple District 4 website is for Lions; a non-Lion would not search

for MD4 to find out about Lions in California. The new website is www.californialions.org. We now

identify ourselves as California Lions. The California Lions website is tailored to let the general public

know what Lions do. There are videos, a way to find a local club and much more. We are looking for

“New Voices” with this new site and have made it attractive to young people. Please take a look and let

us know what you think. The website is not finished; it is a work in progress so any input to make

changes is welcome.

My plane will be back in the air at the end of the week and I will be winging my way to Oakdale to visit

District 4-A1. DG Don Gall invited me to their cabinet meeting and I am looking forward to bringing

back ideas for our district. See you at our District Meeting on November 17 at the Lakehead Lions Club

House.

GRIP IT AND RIP IT!

NEW VOICES! I know many of you have had the pleasure of having your District Gov-

ernor visits and have heard about International President Gudrun Yngvadottir’s new ini-

tiative.

New Voices is just like it sounds, we want to hear from new people. That does not mean

just new lions. We have over 1,050 Lions in our district and we hear from a select few on

issues effecting clubs, the district or the multiple district. In order for us to better serve

you; we need to know the inner workings of our clubs within the district.

In addition to new Lion voices we are striving for parity between men and women in both

our general membership and our leadership. I am actively preparing for my year as Gov-

ernor, with DG Sue’s blessing. I would like to bring in fresh faces on the leadership

team. We need new ideas in order to progress further in our association and serve our

communities.

I sincerely hope that some of you will step up to the plate to serve our district and make

an impact on how we move forward, increasing membership, service and leadership.

I am looking forward to our Cabinet Meeting later this month and speaking with many

of you. If you have ever thought about serving the district, please contact me or anyone

on the district team. We will be happy to discuss the operation of the district with you.

You just may be the fresh face we are looking for to grow.

Thank you for your continued support!

Yours in Service;

1VDG Elisa ‘Lisa’ Coyle

Autumn is About Change….

As the weather becomes colder and leaves fall from the sky scattered beneath your feet

as you walk down the damp path, I am reminded of change. Watching the trees change

color and lose their leaves only to gain them back bigger and stronger the next year. It

seems as though mother nature follows a pattern that I have become a very big fan of -

the changing of the seasons.

Autumn seems to be about change—November 1959: The American Football League

was formed. And in November of 1997, the Milwaukee Brewers became the first major

league baseball team to switch leagues during the 20th century. They moved from the

American League to the National League. Change is inevitable, it makes us grow as

people and it makes us excited for the new sports, recreation activities, family gatherings

& business opportunities—just to name a few.

With the autumn leaves and the change in the season, try something new this year. Get

excited for the change of the season and look forward to the new that it will bring in the

following year.

I hope this finds you well, thank you for all that you do!

Regards,

Lion Tyler Spencer,

2nd Vice District Governor

District 4-C1 Health Foundation Notes

Another round of thanks goes to the volunteers who made our Camp for

Youths with Diabetes such a success. I won’t try to name them all, but the

man in charge, as he has been for many years, was and is PDG Bob Trueax.

We had 73 kids in attendance and lots of staff members to look out for

them and to train them.

Our Helen Garr continues to lead the efforts to provide free vision screen-

ing. Again this past year we did over 10,000 individuals!! The 8 devices

manned by scores of Lions in our 4 regions did a marvelous job! Thanks

go out to them!

We don’t operate on air, so please think about how you can help the Health

foundation stay in business. Clubs and individuals can send our way our

sustenance, that is: Your Donations. If you have any questions, please call

me,

PDG Steve Robeson at 530 467-4167.

Lions White Cane DAYS 2018

The results of $180.02 done by Redding Host for White Cane Days was

amazing since they only had 4 volunteers and the chair. Each volunteer

worked an hour.

Who in your club will be the 2019 chair?

White Cane History

In 1921, James Biggs, a photographer from Bristol, England, became blind following an

accident. Because he was feeling uncomfortable with the amount of traffic around his

home, he painted his walking stick white to be more easily visible.

In 1930, Lion George A. Bonham, President of the Peoria Lions Club (Illinois) intro-

duced the idea of using the white cane with a red band as a means of assisting the

blind in independent mobility. The Peoria Lions approved the idea, white canes were

made and distributed, and the Peoria City Council adopted an ordinance giving the

bearers the right-of-way to cross the street. News of the club’s activity spread quickly

to other Lions clubs throughout the United States, and their visually impaired friends

experimented with the white canes. Overwhelming acceptance of the white cane idea

by the blind and sighted alike quickly gave cane users a unique method of identifying

their special need for travel consideration among their sighted counterparts.

Also, in 1931, in France, Guilly d’Herbemont recognized the danger to blind people in

traffic and launched a national “white stick movement” for blind people. She donated

5,000 white canes to people in Paris.

Today white cane laws are on the books of every state in the US and in a few other

countries, providing persons who are blind a legal status in traffic. The white cane uni-

versally acknowledges that the bearer is blind. It is celebrated internationally on the

fifteenth of October.

Report by District 4-C1 Student Speaker Foundation Representative,

PDG Steve Robeson

The time for you to start working with your schools in order to present our

Student Speaker Contest is upon us. I’m sure you are planning for you Febru-

ary Club Contest. Good luck to you and your club representatives.

It was nice for me to receive a communication the other day from a club in our

district which is planning an annual fund-raiser to help our district toward the

difficult task each year of attempting to raise $7,500. We usually don’t raise

our fair share, but the MD 4 Student Speaker Foundation keeps funding our

district’s expenses. We appreciate the clubs and individuals who DO give an-

nually. If your club doesn’t contribute to the Foundation, please consider a

discussion at your next board meeting. Remember, funding your club contest

is not contributing to the Foundations expenses on our part.
