New directive regulating the use of Passenger Name Record (PNR) The new Directive 2016/681 regulating the use of Passenger Name Record (PNR) data in the EU for the prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution of terrorist offences and serious crime was published in the EU Official Journal of the EU on April, 27 (http://www.boe.es/doue/2016/119/L00132-00149.pdf).

It will oblige airlines to hand national authorities passengers’ data for all flights from third countries to the EU and vice versa.

Once published in the EU Official Journal of the EU, member states will have two years to transpose it into their national laws.

Member states will have to set up “Passenger Information Units” (PIUs) to manage the PNR data collected by air carriers.

The PIU in Spain will be the Spanish Office of Passenger Information (ONIP), which depends on the Minister for Home Affairs through the Center of Intelligence Against the Terrorism and the Organized Crime (CITCO).

Short Haul Route: Saint Petersburg

General Overview

Situated on the Neva River, at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea, Saint Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia, with a population of more than 5 million, and an icon of the Russian art and culture.

The city was formerly known as Petrograd and later Leningrad.

This is a magical city with a long list of major attractions like The Hermitage, one of the largest art museums in the world, fabulous palaces like the Winter Palace of the Romanov Dynasty, majestic churches like the church on the Spilled Blood or St. Isaac’s Cathedral, straight avenues, leafy boulevards and winding canals dotted with baroque bridges, among others. Therefore, this unique and extraordinary Historic Centre constitutes a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

No trip to St. Petersburg would be also complete without seeing an opera or ballet performance. The Mariinsky is perhaps the most well-known institution, but it is by no means the only historic theater in the city.

Airport Pulkovo Saint Petersburg is the third busiest airport in Russia. Located 23 kilometers away from the central Palace Square of the city and it opened a new terminal in 2014 with capacity for 18 million passengers.

Potential Routes

Spain is connected to Saint Petersburg from 5 cities (Madrid, Barcelona Malaga, Alicante and Tenerife).

Saint Petersburg and Vancouver

Neverhteless, in 2015 there were also more than 460,000 indirect passengers1 who travelled from Spain to Russia (95,000 to Saint Petersburg) and 956,000 Russian tourists2 visiting our country.

Even though there is a good connectivity with Spain, there are stll some routes with potential.

The main destinations to consider as possible new routes according to the indirect traffic figures for 2015 are:

Valencia: 5,500 indirect passengers

Palma de Majorca: 5,300 indirect passengers

Aena’s marketing team will be happy to follow up with more detailed information. Please, do not hesitate to ask us for a tailor made business case.

Additionally, there is a great potential of indirect passengers from all over Spain flying to the West area of Canada and USA with almost 311,800 indirect passengers and 1,100,000 Skyscanner searches in 2015.

Incentive Scheme for 2016

The 1.9% decrease in airport charges, the new route Incentive Scheme that rewards connections to new destinations and the Marketing Support to promote the new routes added to the major traffic potential make this route very attractive.

Long Haul Route: Vancouver

General overview

Vancouver is located in the southwest corner of British Columbia – the westernmost of Canada’s provinces. An easy hop by car, train or plane, it is only 38 kilometers north of the US border and 96 kilometers northeast of Victoria, the province´s capital.

The city of Vancouver has a population of 603,000 – rising to 2.3 million when you include the wider Metro Vancouver region (third largest in Canada). A model of diversity, almost 50 per cent of the population considers English as its mother tongue, while the most recent census (2011) also revealed that 25 per cent consider Chinese as their first language.

Vancouver is a mandatory stopover on any trip to Canada, where you can enjoy exotic and diverse environments and sometimes even contradictory between them: head over to any of the beaches to relax or visit the impressive Grouse Mountains or Whistler Alpine Station, take a stroll at Robson Street, or enjoy a breathtaking experience at Capilano Suspension Bridge. You cannot leave Vancouver without visiting the Anthropology Museum and Stanley Park.

Already recognized as having the smallest carbon footprint of any major city in North America, its mayor recently committed to making this “the world’s greenest city” by 2020. The initiative covers issues of sustainability, and urban planning for residents and businesses and aims to implement programs that will make Vancouver an eco-

Potential Routes

Spain has no direct flight connection with Vancouver. However, in 2015, 45,900 indirect passengers travelled between Vancouver and Spain (302,000 from Canada to Spain).

Barcelona with 22,400 indirect passengers and Madrid with 14,900 indirect passengers in 2015 are the main destinations to consider a new route to Vancouver.

Both cities are year round destinations that had 92,300 searches with 10,450 redirections in the case of Madrid and 84,250 searches with 8,250 redirections in the case of Barcelona according to Skyscanner.

1. The Concha Bay

The Concha Bay is the image par excellence of San Sebastian. The Concha Beach stands right in the centre of the city and stretches from the City Hall to “El Pico del Loro” (Parrot’s Beak). Its 1,500 meters of white sand are elegant and cosmopolitan. It is no surprise that The Concha is considered to be one of the best city beaches in Europe.

The Concha promenade is punctuated with several elements famous in their own right and well known beyond the city: the Concha railing (one of the most universal icons of the city, unmistakable for its design), the lamp posts (replicated in The Film Festival awards), “los relojes” (“the clocks”, in the main access to the beach), the area around La Perla (with its variety of spa options, bars & restaurants, sports clubs, etc.). All of these elements make a stroll round the Concha, whether through the beach or the promenade, an essential activity for locals and tourists alike.

2. Old Town of San Sebastian

The Old Town was surrounded by a city wall until 1863, when it was demolished to make way for the new town. The Plaza de la Constitutión lies at the heart of the Old Town. The balconies on the colorful buildings that line the square display numbers dating back to the time when it was used as a bullring. Today, however, the Plaza de la Constitucion is the scene of busy comings and goings and the setting for major local festivities. The Old Town is also home to the city’s two oldest churches: San Vicente Church and Basilica of Santa María

At the opposite end of the Old Town is the Museo San Telmo; an ancient 16th century Dominican convent, once used as military barracks and home today of the new Museum of Basque Society and Citizenship. The building has a cloister and an ancient church well worth the visit. The far eastern side of the Old Town looks on to the harbor, well protected from the Bay of Biscay.

Once the walls were demolished in the late 19th century, successive work carried out on the new part of San Sebastian gradually gave the city its layout as we know it today.

The new town was very carefully planned, with an extremely elegant 19th century design and eclectic style. The most remarkable aspect of the new town is the feeling of unity barely interrupted by a handful of modern buildings. Outstanding among these are: The San Sebastian City Hall, The Buen Pastor Cathedral, The Plaza de Bilbao, María Cristina Bridge, Paseo de Francia, Victoria Eugenia Theatre, The, Maria Cristina Hotel, The new spa La Perla and The Monte Igeldo Funicular railway.

3. Romantic Area 4. Architecture

A 16th century church in Gothic style, an 18th century Baroque basilica, Belle Époque buildings, palaces, Rationalist buildings, contemporary works...San Sebastian’s architecture has everything; San Sebastian is tradition and avant-garde, among the most important buildings are:

• Contemporany works: Kursaal and Basque Culinary Center, Gastronomic Sciences University

• Religious Buildings: Buen Pastor Cathedral

• Belle Epoque buidlings

• Mansions and Castles

• Squares and Promenades

6. Surfing and Golf

Surf plays a major role in San Sebastian. Thousands of surfers from all over the world make their way to San Sebastian’s Zurriola Beach with the sole pretext of surfing its waves. That’s why San Sebastian is the setting for dozens of local, national and international championships mainly held from spring to autumn. During these months, it becomes easy to confuse the Zurriola Beach and its surrounding areas with any surf city in Australia or California.

The local passion for surf is so great that recent years have seen it become a way of life, and it’s common to come across some kind of surfing event on the Zurriola Beach. The areas of Sagüés, on the Paseo de la Zurriola, and the district of Gros are packed with bars, pubs, restaurants and shops for surfers.

The main reason for visiting the “Zurri”, as the local youths like to call it, is to move your

body. This lively aspect is precisely its greatest attraction. Surf championships and daily surf classes, volleyball, football and beach-tennis... The hub of beach activity is to be found here, on the 800 metres of sand occupied by the Zurriola.

Surrounding San Sebastian, the visitor may find 4 Golf courses:

• 2 of 18 holes: Fuenterrabia (home town of the two times Augusta Masters winner, José Maria Olazabal) and San Sebastian

Coming down from The Monte Igueldo, you find the Peine del Viento (Wind Comb), designed by the internationally famous “donostiarra” artist Eduardo Chillida, a profound dialogue between art and the landscape. After strolling through the gardens and Ondarreta Beach, you arrive at the Miramar Palace, the former summer residence of the royal family which is surrounded by gardens. From La Concha Beach, you reach the Aquarium that is nearly a century old and has recently been refurbished. It is one of the most modern oceanographic museums in Europe and tells the fascinating story of the Basque whalers of years gone by. Continuing along the coast you will come to Construccion Vacia (Empty Construction), a sculpture by Oteiza, which beckons us towards the Paseo Nuevo, which leads to the popular Gros district, with its charming terrace cafés, shops and bars. The walk ends at the third beach, Zurriola, and with the third sculpture: Paloma de la Paz (Dove of Peace) by Nestor Basterretxea.

Located midway between Cadiz and Seville in the South of Spain, and some nine miles inland from the Atlantic ocean and the mountains, Jerez is worldwide renowned for its Sherry wine, tapas, flamenco and horses in the purest Andalusian flavor.

Here you are a few details about its history and main cultural heritage:

The true origin of Jerez de la Frontera still remains a mystery to this day. Some researchers believe that the city used to belong to the ancient Tartessic Empire, others share the view that the origins of the city are to be found in its relation with the primitive Phoenician settlement of Serit or Ceret, that later on became Seritium or Xeritium in Latin; and then Sheres, Xerez till finally Jerez.

It was also a Moorish occupation called “de la Frontera” because it once stood on the frontier between the Moorish and the Christian realms.

The school is dedicated to conserve classical and country dressage and the breed of the Spanish horse. They act as ambassadors of Spain abroad and go on an annual tour to different foreign countries.

Flamenco is a passionate and seductive art form. A mysterious and sometimes misunderstood culture that has been burning in Andalucia for centuries, although today has thousands of enthusiasts worldwide.

It’s not by random that flamenco was recognized in 2010 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
