Love Makes the World Go ’Round

“High in some silent sky love sings a silver song

making the earth whirl softly; Love makes the world go

’round.”

~Bob Merrill

Such a whimsical romantic notion in these lyrics from the theme song of a popular 1961 Broadway musical! Or is it merely whimsy?

Whatever scientific forces cause the earth to spin on its axis are not in question here, but rather what is it that keeps those of us on the face of the beautiful blue marble going ‘round in our daily lives.

A strong sense of purpose is one of life’s most positive motivators. Stephen Covey in his book, The 8th Habit, writes, “Deep within each of us there is an inner longing to live a life of …

contribution—to really matter, to really make a difference.” Life coach Richard Leider says, “Purpose is a source of energy and direction.”

To have purpose is to act on one’s deeper motivating beliefs. Deeper beliefs that endow us with a true sense of purpose have their foundations in love, compassion and sharing.

A popular quote from Mother Teresa says it well: “Do small things with great love.”

At Encore Communities, we want to be a part of this great motivating force-our purpose is to create a safe loving environment for our seniors to live out their retirement years. Respect, compassion and a healthy dose of daily hugs abound here, because love makes our world go ‘round.

Page 5 The capacity for hope is the most significant fact of life. It provides human beings with a sense of destination and the energy to get started. ~Norman Cousins

The theme for American Heart Month this year is “You’re In Control.” This year the is focus on younger adults as a result of more younger adults dying of heart disease and the rates of their risk factors—physical inactivity, tobacco use, hypertension—are increasing, as well.

Taking control of your heart health is a little like the song: when the odds are against you, you stand up to them and take control; if you feel hopeless because of inherited risk factors, you can still “get your chin up off the floor; there’s nothin’ to it but to do it!” that is, take control!

There are five simple ways to get a grip on good health and “have heart” that anyone can follow:

Find time to be active: at least 150 minutes a week

Make healthy eating a habit with more fruits, veggies, less fats and sodium

Quit tobacco for good (call 1-800-QUIT-NOW)

Know your numbers (blood pressure & cholesterol

Stick to the ‘script: take medi-cations as prescribed —‘Cause you gotta have heart!

February is American Heart Month HEART!

From the Broadway Musical “Damn Yankees”

You’ve gotta have heart; All you really need is heart.

When the odds are sayin’ you’ll never win,

That’s when the grin should start.

You’ve gotta have hope; Mustn’t sit around and mope.

Nothin’s half as bad as it may appear.

Wait’ll next year and hope.

When your luck is battin’ zero, get your chin up off the floor.

Mister, you can be a hero, you can open any door.

There’s nothin’ to it but to do it!

You’ve gotta have heart; Miles ‘n miles ‘n miles of heart.

Oh, it’s fine to be a genius of course,

But keep that old horse before the cart.

First you’ve gotta have heart!

“Music is therapy. Music moves people. It connects people in ways that no other medium can. It pulls heart strings. It acts as medicine.” This is the personal conviction of Macklemore, a young Grammy Award Winning musician from Seattle. It is also the result of scientific studies from around the world.

Research suggests that music helps us cope with pain and can benefit our physical and mental health in a myriad of ways. And music makes you happier: Listening to music provides us with the same burst of happiness that we would get from eating a piece of chocolate.

In studies, music has successfully reduced levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which is responsible for weakening the immune

system, increasing risk of heart disease, etc. Research found that by listening to just 50 minutes of uplifting music the levels of anti-bodies in the human body increases.

There are a score of benefits to music: *eases pain *motivates people to exercise *increases exercise endurance * improves sleep quality *enhances blood vessel function *reduces stress *relieves symptoms of depres-sion *elevates mood *improves cognitive perfor-mance *reduces anxiety * eases stress after surgery *eases recovery in stroke patients ,and many more, but a personal favorite is: elevates mood while driving, so if you’re feeling cranky in the car, crank up some favorite tunes!

Doctor’s recommendation? Take two CD’s and call me in the morning!

“Music is the sound of love and love makes the world go ‘round.”
