One of the scariest but most important parts of life planning is
preparing for our last days. Over the past weeks I’ve had several
conversations on topics such as: What do our last days look like?
What do you/we want to happen? While we have all our faculties
and are able to be in control: is it appropriate to make sure that our
wishes about our care are known, if we were unable to articulate
our desires..
There are several things to consider:
1. Are you RECORDS up-to-date and accessible?
Your Property Will with your intentions for bequests/gifts and the
appointment of your executor. If you have Life Insurance: who has
copies and are your beneficiaries up-to-date. With regard to your
medical desires do you have a duly appointed Health Care Proxy,
do they know your wishes and have you filled out an Advanced
Medical Directives. I think you’ll find the State of Maryland
(http://www.oag.state.md.us/Healthpol/adirective.pdf) document
on the website easy to fill out in advance. Both the RA
(Conservative rabbis) www.rabbinicalassembly.org/docs/
medical%20directives.pdf and the RCA (Orthodox)
www.rabbis.org/pdfs/hcp.pdf have ―LIVING WILLS‖ worth read-
ing for guidelines to include in your witnessed document. It is
also considered by most authorities a mitzvah today to donate or-
gans for Transplantation (there is still some debate on what consti-
tutes brain death before donating vital organs.)
2. As I’ve discovered with my own parents, with great time and
difficulty, it is very important to have up-to-date financial records
for loved ones and to have power-of-attorney already in place be-
fore someone becomes incapacitated. Having access to accounts is
very difficult when the person who owns the account cannot speak
or sign for executing transactions.
3. ETHICAL WILL One of the most precious things we can leave
for our posterity is a document articulating our values, sometimes
words that we wanted to say but left unsaid, and certainly our
hopes for our own lives and lives of those we love.
4. Tell someone or document what you want for your funeral
Where do you want to be buried (this is a ―biggie‖)
Do you prefer a particular Funeral Home? A particular Rabbi?
Where do you prefer the Service (Chapel, Synagogue, Graveside)?
Do you want the Traditional preparations or not? Plain coffin,
shrouds, washing, shomer
Is there someone special you’d like to have speak/participate?
Do you have any suggestions for the service (favorite readings or
music?)
Who do you want to server as Pallbearers? Do you wish to specify
a favorite charity?
Some people even prepare their own Obituary – so make sure cer-
tain things are included and to spare loved ones the stress of writ-
ing it under duress.
As indicated last year, a Jewish funeral is an expensive proposi-
tion, running at least $3500 for a traditional burial and 3 times as
much depending upon non-traditional coffins and services.
5. Finally, make sure your loved ones know the important people
for these needs: Lawyer, Doctor, and Funeral Home.
This is not an exhaustive list but if you have questions, please call
or make an appointment.

Wendy Beckerman and Jedd Moskowitz – A Committed Duo
by Stu and Janet Rutchik
Volunteers of the Month
It’s a real pleasure to have the opportunity to write about volunteers and their contribution to our
community. We have had the pleasure of knowing Jedd and Wendy for all of our 20 years at Kehilat Shalom. Whether it’s attend-
ing regular Shabbat services, participating in a Sisterhood or Men’s Club event, attending Board meetings or just gathering s ocially–
Jedd and Wendy are part of the picture. Their unique touch is founded on the very foundation of what Judaism and synagogue life
are all about–the commitment to give beyond one’s self for the betterment of the community as a whole.
Wendy has been a valued Sisterhood member for many years. Her full time job is as a graphic artist and she has graciously shared
that skill with our congregation. Wendy has been responsible for most of the lovely flyers that you have seen for Sisterhood events.
Wendy also is the creator of the Kehilat Shalom logo with the depiction of the tree on the ark—an image that we have enjoyed for
several years. Thank you, Wendy, for giving in so many ways to make Kehilat Shalom a special warm place. Within the commu-
nity, Wendy is active with friends from the shul in her regular Mahj group, and, when asked, is always willing to show a novice how
to play!
Jedd is involved with Men’s Club, the School Board, the Board of Directors, the Ritual Committee and much more. Professionall y
he is key support and guidance for Congressman Gary Ackerman (D-NY) and has been with him for all of his legislative career. As
for our community, Jedd is a pillar of the kehila–a resident expert often called upon by other leaders for direction and perspective
during services or in the planning of events. His breadth of knowledge on Torah, customs and practices during services, parliamen-
tary procedure within meetings of the congregation, are among the many strengths Jedd brings to the community. As President, Jedd
sought out others for assistance and pursued many actions and changes organizationally that support the mission and long term focus
in the interest of Kehilat Shalom. On a lighter side, an article about Jedd needs to feature his love of sports, and surely his help and
counsel for the Men’s Club’s committee on probability and statistics ( that’s the special poker night – the 3rd Monday of every
month).
Yasher koach to Wendy and Jedd–and thank you for being part of our synagogue and community.
JOIN US TO HONOR JUDI KRANZ
On Saturday, March 12, our congregation will be honoring Judi Kranz, Executive Director, for her 30 years of service and upcoming retirement from Kehilat Shalom. We will be producing a Commemorative Booklet with well-wishes for Judi, which will be distributed at the Service and Luncheon on March 12. If you would like to publicly express your thanks in the Commemorative Booklet, in the name of your business, organization, or family, please complete and return the bottom portion of this letter by February 11. Judi has worked tirelessly to promote the best interests of our congregation and we hope you will join us by placing a special message in the Commemorative Booklet.

Life and Early Childhood Center News
by Amy Snyder, Director of Early Childhood Education
February is a short month, but here at the Early Childhood
Center we pack it full of fun anyway. We will begin this
month with our school-wide Community Helper Week.
During this week the classes learn about the many different
jobs and people we count on in our community. The high-
lights of this week are the visits from some of these special
workers.
Our Early Childhood Center Family Shabbat Service and
Dinner will be held on February 11th. This is always a
lovely evening. After a family centered Shabbat service and
sing-a-long, the families and ECC staff enjoy a Shabbat din-
ner together. We hope to see many of our families for this
evening.
On February 23rd all of our ECC children will enjoy a visit
from Ms. Tammy, The Felt Board Lady. Ms. Tammy
brings beautiful handmade felt props with her to enhance her
storytelling. The children sit mesmerized by her captivating
stories as they watch the felt board props bring the stories to
life.
February will quickly turn into March. We will surely be
hoping for some signs of spring. While we wait for warmer
weather, our classes will enjoy learning about and celebrating
Purim. Our building will once again be filled with the sound
of groggers, smell of Hamantashen baking and festive art-
work. On March 21st the ECC children will enjoy a school-
wide Purim Party and on March 23rd Bill Jenkins, a multicul-
tural music educator, will visit our Lucky Ladybug and Fan-
tastic Fish Classes with his wonderful assortment of instru-
ments from around the world.
We are currently accepting registration for both Summer Fun
Club, 2011 and our 2011–2012 school year programs. Please
call Amy at 301-869-1929 or visit our website at

Picasso at the Lapin Agile
By Steve Martin (yes, that Steve Martin!)
Performance at the
Asbury Methodist Village
Rosborough Center, Gaithersburg
Paris. 1904. So, Albert Einstein walks into a bar … and thus begins this hilarious, provocative, and slightly absurd play about an imagined meeting between an awkward and unknown twenty-five year old scientist and a lusty and unknown twenty-five year old painter named Pablo Picasso. A treat for both your brain and your funny bone, Picasso at the Lapin Agile proves that the thin line between genius and insanity looks something like a tight-rope for those who dare to push the envelope.
You can buy your tickets through
Kehilat Shalom for $15 each.
Make your reservations by February 15!

Active Retirees News
by Marcia Litwack,
Active Retirees Co-President
The Active Retirees have had some interesting and informative pro-
grams in January. First was a program presented by Jody Harburger on
―Israeli Inventions that Changed the World.‖ The list was impressive
and we were unaware that the technology of so many common items
was developed in Israel. Next was an exercise program presented by
Barbara Ronis that consisted of chair exercises suitable for seniors.
Since it is winter and cold outside, later in January the group will pre-
pare a home made vegetable soup that will be ready for lunch when the
program is completed.
Because it is now winter and the question of what to do when it snows
or has snowed overnight, it seems appropriate to remind everyone of our
snow policy. We follow the Montgomery County school procedure. If
the schools are closed, we will not have a meeting. If the schools open
