Skeletal System

Page 2: 1. SUPPORT – it supports the softer tissues and provides points of attachment for most skeletal muscles. 2. PROTECTION – bones protect internal organs

Functions of the Skeletal System 1. SUPPORT – it supports the softer

tissues and provides points of attachment for most skeletal muscles.

2. PROTECTION – bones protect internal organs from injury (skull protects brain)

3. MOVEMENT – muscles attach to bones, and allow the body to move at joints when the muscles contract

Page 3: 1. SUPPORT – it supports the softer tissues and provides points of attachment for most skeletal muscles. 2. PROTECTION – bones protect internal organs

Functions of the Skeletal System

4. PRODUCTION OF BLOOD – blood cells are produced in bone marrow in larger bones

5. STORAGE – minerals (Calcium and Phosphorus) stored in bones and can be released into the blood to keep proper a balance

Parts of the Bone

Cartilage : Found on the ends of bones, it is slippery and flexible to protect bones at joints.

Parts of the Bone

Hard bone: strong material found on the outside of bone. Provides great strength.

Periosteum: thin membrane covering the outside of bones

Parts of the Bone

Spongy Bone: located on the ends of bones, made of many open spaces, makes bones lightweight and strong

Parts of Bone

Marrow: found in the center of bones, makes new blood cells
