THE GAVELMargaret & Kris [email protected]
To all my delegates and committee members that have always supported, embraced even through the impossible times, and came through in the end, with undying support. I appreciate all you have done for me and our activity, THANK YOU!!
So as we move on, everyone knows, I will move on to the Nominating Chairwomen, I will be contacting all clubs and council Nominating Chairpersons. In closing, (I hate good byes) so, I will never say it. But what I will say is this, I look forward to the day I see you on the dance floor in a square doing what we love to do. We love each and every one of you, we wish you safety and stay well until we dance again.
President Couple, Margaret and Kris
Happy Fall to all our dancers across the state!
What do we say after 3 years writing the gavel? We have had an amazing ride.
We have met so many amazing people. I will miss some of my interactions with different people, but Kris and I look forward to dancing with many of our lifelong friends and acquaintances. After so many years of being involved in a leadership role in the Washington State Square Dance Federation, we step aside and allow other dancers that have been elected to chart the course of our dancing future.
Over the years, I have been honored to know and work with the finest people I have ever known. This journey we have been on has only been successful, with your great support and your unconditional love.
Our love for all of our square dancing friends will always be very close to my heart, and I pray that we all can greet each other with grace and dignity, when we get through this pandemic. I realize this has been a very difficult time in our activity, we miss everyone, we miss our face to face friendships but most of all we miss all our hugs and dancing. For all our friends we have lost during this pandemic we look forward to seeing them another day when we meet again in heaven.
To our incoming board and delegates, I hope you have the same opportunity to enjoy all the support of all the dancers that I have had. I have had a wonderful 20 years in the federation, this is a bittersweet article. My hope and prayer is when we can move forward after the pandemic is cleared we can all enjoy each other, as it has been a very difficult time.
Over all these years, I have had the honor and privilege to sit shoulder to shoulder with some of the greatest board members. This has taught me many things that I have needed to know, to do a great job, but has made me a better person. So at this time I would like to give everyone a heartfelt THANK YOU!!

I’m sure we all thought that by this time we would be meeting somewhere to enjoy dancing with our friends.
Its been a tough year and we are’t over it yet. Footnotes Magazine will continue as though we are dancing the nights away. Trying to stay intouch with friends and our dancing family.
We were saddened and shocked to hear of Del and Jackies accident this summer. Larry and I will miss Del at dances around our area. Our sympathy and prayers go out to Jackie, Frank and Kathy Chase, and of course athe rest of their family.
A big THANK YOU to the 2019-2020 Footnotes Staff. They did an awsome job this year getting their reports in by the 10th of the month. All of the articles were informative, and positive, considering we were locked down for most of the year. I know it was a tough year for all of them..

THANK YOU
Callers and presidents have been meeting throught the summer, via Zoom Meetings, to discuss how we will open our halls and granges for dancing. I’m sure when things are closer to opening there will be lots of information from the “group” in Footnotes.
If you cancel your dance don’t forget to cancel your caller and your cuer!
The Festival committee really needs your registration. If you havent registered please do it soon. So far ( a week or two ago) there were only 77 registered. They missed the registeration table at the National Festival and at Leadership due to cancellations. They really do need your registration.

Recommendations for Safe Return to Dancing – Revised 8.20.20
Square & Folk Dance Federation of Washington – for immediate distribution to all WA club & council presidents. Following the WA phased approach, a square dance club should be in an area that has moved to Phase 4, resuming interactions w/social distancing & hygiene. Also consider that some halls or facilities may have restrictions that will not allow dancing to resume. As representatives of Federation members we strongly recommend the following:
Immediate cancellation of all dance activities through December 31, 2020 and to notify all contracted callers, cuers & venues of this action.
Each group should keep in communication with membership with up to date recommendations & ask for their input to determine what is best for their organization
The Federation has inquired with State Health officials as to recommended guidelines to follow for re-entry to square dancing. It is recommended that:
We should wait until we have entered Phase 4 (in our immediate area). Note: When it is safe to begin in your area, be cautious about travel to other areas.
Limit size of gathering using safe capacity measures Control area of usage for health & safety(using CDC recommendations-see steps
below) Provide masks & gloves Health Monitor – Participants should self-monitor prior to entry
The club/organization holding the event can and should set and enforce the requirements for that event and area. It is suggested to post those requirements. When a club can resume dancing the following steps are recommended: 1-Risk Management Health monitor - it should be up to each dancer to be considerate & respectful of others. Stay home if you have or recently had a temperature, had frequent headaches, a dry cough, breathing issues, and/or just not felt well or if you live or work with anyone who is or has been sick. Get their contact information (email and/or phone number) in case contact tracing is necessary. A disclaimer from each dancer-event is also recommended (check with your insurance carrier)
SAFE RETURN TO DANCINGRECOMMENDATIONS
8 | FOOTNOTES www.squaredance-wa.org SEPTEMBER 2020
2-Physical Distancing Line dancing and round dancing can allow for physical distancing from other dancers, except for our partner in a round dance. There is just no way that we can stay six feet apart in square dancing. That is why risk assessment is so important. 3-Wearing a Mask One of the most effective ways to significantly reduce the spread of any virus passed on by aerosol droplets. 4-Washing your Hands Extremely important. Using an approved hand sanitizer after each tip – having available several stations around the hall where a good hand sanitizer is available and have masks to dispense. 5-Food Shared food is not recommended, unless it is in commercially-sealed in individual containers. Dancers should bring their own food and beverages in their own containers. 6-Sanitizing Surfaces Wipe down frequently touched surfaces such as tables, chairs, doorknobs, light switches, restroom toilets, faucets, sinks and other surfaces before, during, and after a dance with a suitable disinfectant is advisable and should be an important consideration to those running the event. (This is advised every hour.) The Federation will take another look at where we are near year end for the next steps.
We encourage you to keep in touch with each other.

SEND IN A PHOHO AND WIN
One of my goals, when I took over Foot-notes, was to increase the viewing of our
Magazine. I’ve put some thought into this and would like to GIVE BACK to the dancers who read our magazine.
Covid has caused us all to miss our dancing friends so I’m asking for Photos of dancing/dancers, interesting places you’ve been, animals in the wild or backyard, or something interesting of your choice. I’ve been using photos from the internet but your photos are far more interesting. They will be placed through out Footnotes this year and may not be with your club or council. 1-2 photos per month will get you into the draw-ing for the 50.00 registration to 2022 festival in Spokane.
So I know who to give credit to, please rename your photo with your name and if more than one photo your name and a num-ber. EXAMPLE: Cynda Clark 2.jpg
Please limit the number of photos to 2 per month
Winner will be announced at the 2021 State Festival. in Everett,WA.
After the winner registers for the 2022 festival to be held in Spokane, Footnotes will reimburse the registration fee up to $50.00.
GOOD LUCK!

5612 S. Napa Street • Spokane, WA 99223-8248509.443.0126
This is the time of year when we are working with the clubs to get their membership and insurance renewed for the coming year. We still have several clubs that we are doing our best to remind and assist in completing this renewal process. August 31st is the deadline for these renewals per the By-Laws. If you haven’t completed your renewals (club, membership and insurance) you are not covered by insurance and you will be dropped from the federation, because our insurance year is from September 1st through August 31st.
We do realize the Coronavirus has created a situa-tion like no one has ever seen before. So, here is our current situation: We started with 97 clubs; four have folded; 15 have not paid their membership and insurance; which leaves 78 clubs that are currently renewed for the coming year.
We will attempt to communicate with the 15 clubs who have not paid their membership and insurance for next year. We need to know what these clubs’ plans are before August 31st.
If you need help or have problems feel free to give us a call.
Take care,Richard and Barbara

STEVE’S CALLER CORNERSteve and Leslie Noseck
Arlington, WA 98223-9997 - [email protected]
I would like to take the time to thank the Footnotes Editors for the privilege of being your Square Dance
reporter for the 2019/2020 year. We have enjoyed this time together and hope for all the best to next year’s reporter. Leslie and I thank you.
Very difficult times we have faced this dance sea-son, and it appears that it is still going to continue for the balance of 2020. Safety must be the first order of business before we can dance again. I hope that all the challenges of reopening will be addressed and examined. I might suggest that you write up a game plan and post that at the Hall so all will know what they might expect upon entering and dancing again.
• Follow local health guidelines.• Discuss the wearing of masks or not.• Between tips, keep the “social distancing” in effect.• Make sure all guest and Club Members are healthy
prior to coming to the dance.• Communicate between all Officers.• Keep tabs of any sicknesses at your dances if they
occur.• I would also suggest that you have a Covid agree-
ment to have all persons that enter sign to ac-knowledge the risk.
• Check all your Callers/Cuers contracts and up-date them. Try and reschedule the Callers/Cuers that were affected by your dances that have been cancelled.
• Be sure there are safety hand-sanitizers and soap for hand washing at all stations.
• Avoid change for your donations at the door and go to rates where the $2-$3 dollars can de donated back to the Club.
• Keep food down to bare minimums at the start. Water fountains for filling water bottle by the danc-ers. Wrapped individual portions, no open served food.
• Keep your dances to 2 hours.• Change any workshops of Plus/Rounds to Main-
stream to make all feel comfortable.• Work with your Cuer for (1) Round for a while and
make sure your breaks gives all a chance to wash up.
• Stress to your Caller to keep everything as Basic as possible in the first few dances and use “Singers” to entertain.

FISHTAILING FOR ROUNDSBob and Linda Berka
be visiting with our friends face-to-face…NO HUGGING like we use to…BUT how about “AIR HUGS” from 6 feet away….HA…that’ll do it!
The whole idea is to accomplish what we want to do as safely as we can. We want to stay well and help other stay the same. Risks I take impact everyone I care about. We must stay informed, make good common sense choices and think things through. We want to carry inspirations from these times into the rest of our lives.
We want to support community health and awareness throughout, remembering that no man is an island. We want our grandchildren to step boldly into the future safely with less risk and danger.
We, as dancers want to dance again and together we will “weather-out-the-storm”. WE WILL DANCE AGAIN! In the meantime---you know the drill…..MASK IT!Bob and I attended a Caller/Cuer “ZOOM” meeting.
Ideas were brought forward as to what we as leaders can do to enhance our programs when we begin to dance again. One of the ideas was to present workshops of sorts. NO NEW STUDENTS at first and not to start new classes. There will be those club members that will be sensitive about gathering again and won’t attend a dance or a workshop thus resulting in maybe only one or two squares attending which is NOT going to pay the bills for that night. A small club will not be able to exist very long. Sooo, a recommendation of two clubs uniting for the first few dances, alternate hosting with the idea that more dancers will attend. Also the idea of possibly having two dances in one month and asking the club call/cuer to call/cue. Clubs need to poll their membership for attendance information. Other ideas we have heard …NO
Respectfully,Bob and Linda Berka
RISK OR DANGER…
We Miss You..but…We All Want To Be Safe….Right?
The difference between risk and danger can be difficult to calculate. We miss each other but as we think about gathering together, it is probably more of a risk leading to danger.
We have approached a “Changeable Time Era” that is hard to understand. It appears collectively a challenge for everyone on many issues. We are in a learning curve that has no limitations and with the limitations it still seems to change.
As we decide what risks are worth taking and we teach ourselves how to make these decisions wisely, there seems to be a change to the routine and what we counted on comes up either wrong or different. But a change has occurred. For example….I established a certain store I wanted to do my shopping at, inquired to be sure of the proper time and day for seniors, wore my mask and rubber gloves (we both are very compromised), practiced social distancing 6 feet apart, ready to begin my task. All of a sudden I had to recalculate my situation as a crowd was gathering in most of the aisles, no masks and it appeared the store was not monitoring people in the directions requested by the governor to keep everyone healthy and safe. My decision was to leave the store and not risk myself or my family to danger of the virus. I know some of you will disagree with me and that’s okay. I felt more comfortable that I had made a good decision.
A RISK OR DANGER ??…..MAYBE….
As we venture through this pandemic, we are experiencing new ways of thinking about issues like where we go, what we must do to prepare to go and how beneficial is our outing? Is the “outing” that necessary when we could be safer staying at home (and more comfy, with NO MASK). Some are creating various ways of gathering with friends, observing social distancing, along with good healthy manners, outside on the patio. Great ideas and keeping one another safe. It is so wonderful to
20 | FOOTNOTES www.squaredance-wa.org SEPTEMBER 2020
FOOD or to have purchased individually wrapped items. Bring your own bottled water. Clubs need to have sanitary wipes and hand cleaner.
There was a discussion on the idea that Round Dancing could be active dancing 10 feet apart. A possibility when halls open up again and within the various county phasing.
The ROM Committee has already started their yearly task. They have made their selection for the month of September. We would like to thank the committee for volunteering their time. The committee is as follows representing their councils:

SOLO CORNERMarsha Sullivan
SOLO CORNERSeptember 2020Taken from Bellevue Lifestyle, June 2020 article written by Heija Nunn
Submitted by Marsha Sullivan
On February 29, 2020, Washington State became the epicenter of the COVID19 pandemic. Within hours
of the escalating emergency, schools were closed, toilet paper and sanitizers became scarce, and our dance with an uncertain future began.
We still don’t know how long it will take, but latest rumors indicate we won’t be dancing again until January, when we can hope to begin the slow return to the way we were. Now that we have been home for awhile, we have learned something important about you, about me, about us.
We are amazing on-the-job learners.
We are creative, adaptable, efficient, compassionate, ridiculous, petulant, impatient, long-suffering, hilarious, intuitive, lazy, and at the same time, incredibly productive.
We are good neighbors, bad singers, and new bakers and gardeners.
We howl at the noon, and coo at new babies.
We are teachers, callers, dancers, students, givers, and takers; and now, mask-wearers.
It is our job.
We buy groceries for neighbors, mourn for the lost, and pine for celebrations and moments unrealized.
We study and learn, wash up, glove up, love up.
And when we venture outside, we long for inside; we step lightly and act cautious.
It is our job.
We stuff bears in windows and light the skies blue,
We give thanks to the strangers doing jobs we can’t do.
We Zoom into meetings right from our beds.
We sing praises for teachers and take pictures of food,Sometimes we TikTok, it depends on our mood.
We have a big job, and we just work from home, with a paycheck or no.
Each day we clock in and check out, then we clock out and check in.
Reverse that the next day, we’ll do it again.
We are kindness and madness, generosity and greed.
We soar to new heights and then fall to our knees.
We are days and nights upside down, outside smile, inside frown.
We stay home and healthy for the good of our town.

Happy fall everyone!
I miss dancing with everyone, I hope to see you all again sometime soon. I anticipate you all had a nice and relaxing summer, though.
Now on to some very exciting news, I am pleased to announce this year’s Youth Scholarship recipient:
The recipient of the Youth Square Dance Scholarship is a young man who will be going to Everett Community College to continue his education in theoretical physics or a teacher in physics or math. He is a member of the Young Bunch dance club and has competed with them in the PNTSDF for close to ten years in the square and round dance categories. He has also been to countless Daffodil Parades over the years and recently helped with the filming of promotional square dance videos for a caller in California. He has been very committed to dancing his whole life, as shown by the distance he travels to every monthly dance, every competition practice, every event that is going on. He travels from Lake Stevens to Tacoma quite frequently to keep his love for square dancing alive. He dances mainstream and plus and he recently learned advanced and phase 3 - already knowing phase 2 - in round dancing.
He is also very involved with all bands; jazz band, two concert bands, pep band, and the theatre program at his high school, Lake Stevens HS. Which that alone is a lot to juggle, then he is fully committed to the Young Bunch also while he is also taking several AP (advanced placement) classes to add to the mix. That just shows his love and commitment for this wonderful thing, called square dancing.
If you have not figured it out by now, the recipient of the Youth Square Dance Scholarship is………CAMERON HUBBELL!!!!!
Congratulations, Cameron! I wish you success in your future endeavors.

ULTIMATE FUN IN 2021
WELCOME TO JACKSON!
HOME OF THE 70TH NATIONAL SQUARE DANCE CONVENTION®
Our Soul Team board was so looking forward to going to Spokane for dancing fun and getting more registrations for our convention. Also getting to sell all the Ways and Means we have because we must raise money to put on our convention. Dan and I were looking forward to traveling this last year like we have for the last three years across the USA promoting the 70th NSDC. As all of you are stressed by all the Covid-19 issues so is our board. We want to get people registered and have a big “Reunion” dance next year in Jackson.
We sure hope we get to see all of you in Jackson because our board has been working hard to plan you a fun convention. They can hardly believe there is only ten months till our Convention. There are ten great tours planned to take you all over the state. The Everything Elvis tour is a four-day tour before the Convention starts to take you into the life of Elvis that was born in Mississippi. You want to get registered for the Wednesday night special event that has an Elvis Tribute artist that has won Elvis contests. You will thoroughly enjoy his performance along with the great meal that will be right after the opening ceremony that occurs at 5:00. After the convention you can make plans for Dancing Fun in the Sun on the “Glory” ship going to Eastern Caribbean with Justin Russell and Mike Hogan.
Our Education Chairman, Barbara Read, has developed a program that you will enjoy. The theme for the Education Program in Jackson will be Educate with Soul. She will help those that started the Leadership Certification Program (LCP) in Atlanta to get it finalized in Jackson. The Sew & Save program will provide Make & Takes with Beads & Buttons being the theme. Beaded zipper pulls, Beaded T-shirts, Beaded Pictures, and Jewelry.
Our Convention center will have dance halls for all our regular dancing. There will be a clogging competition in the Hilton Garden on Friday and Saturday. There are 6 dance halls on the first floor for different levels of square dancing and round dancing. The second floor has more dance halls for clogging, contra (with live band at night), line dancing, youth, and more squares

and rounds, all the education rooms and storage areas for callers and cuers and exhibitions, the NSDC Archive room and the Showcase of Ideas. The third floor has more square and round dance halls and the theater that will be used for the USDA meeting on Wednesday, the Round Table on Thursday, the bid session and Key Note Speaker, Mike Seastrom, on Friday and the Fashion Show on Saturday. Our Vice-Chairman for the Fashion Show, Linda Carlile, has planned National Fashion Shows before so you know you are going to enjoy it very much.
From now until June 2021 you will hear from our different board members all the plans they are making for you so that you can plan the dances, tours, special events, education sessions and all the other things that will be going on in Jackson the “City with Soul”.
Psst have you heard Patsy Cline may be there along with Elvis?
Our Soul Team Board looks forward to welcoming you to Jackson for some ULTIMATE FUN in 2021
The “City with Soul” has what you want, and we’ve got the best of it.

Mike Seastrom has been dancing since 1960 and calling since 1963. He started dancing after losing a bet to his mother and calling when he
tried to show his 6th grade teacher “what square dancing IS really like.” He taught his first class in 1963 after borrowing money from his folks to buy a small sound system and was able to pay
them back before the class was over. After receiving his doctorate in 1976, Mike joined CALLERLAB in 1977 and has been Chairman of several committees as well as an annual presenter for interest sessions and seminars at CALLERLAB conventions. Mike served on the Board of Governors from 1984 to 2003 and completed a two-year term as the CALLERLAB Chairman of the Board in 1994. He was also awarded the Milestone Award in 2001 by two of his mentors, Bob Van Antwerp and Bob Osgood. He submits monthly CALLERLAB Viewpoint articles to American Square Dance Magazine and his articles have appeared in various publications around the world. Mike teaches, calls Basic through C-1, prompts contras, and enjoys doing dance party events when his schedule allows. He is a strong advocate for the Multi-Cycle Method of teaching new dancers and enjoyed a very successful program with the Valley Trailers Square Dance Club in Northridge. Mike currently teaches for the Buckles & Bows in Thousand Oaks, California. Mike records for Rhythm Records, regularly does caller clinics, and helped produce an Introduction to Contra Dancing package for R & R Video, with the California Contra Caller’s Association. Calling has given Mike the opportunity to travel extensively in the United States, Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Germany, Costa Rica, New Zealand, Australia, and Japan. Mike enjoys dancing as well as calling and still feels that “dancing as a team of eight” is the best recreation in the world.

There is not a BLUE MOUNTAIN COUNCIL meeting scheduled at this time. The May meeting was canceled.
The election results and the new officers will be installed by the current officers at a meeting to be scheduled when this area of Washington is released from the governor’s stay at home order.
All PRAIRIE SHUFFLER activities are canceled through December 2020. The election of officers was held. The new president, Gary and Suzanne Benefield, will notify the club when dances and lessons will resume. We are hoping we can have our annual New Year’s eve dance.
The MUDDY FROGS, of Milton-Freewater, are dark until next season or later depending on the “stay at home” orders in Washington and Oregon. However, The Milton-Freewater Muddy Frogs plan to welc. For further information, please call Merri Anne Huber at 541-861-9055.

TRI CITIES CIRCULATORS and FAMILY-A-FAIR are not meeting for dances or lessons at this time.
The MELODY MIXERS Round Dance club has canceled all dances and lessons through the rest of the fall season, but that will be dependent on the status of the COVID 19 closures and restrictions.
Dancing will certainly be different when we resume. I assume that food and drink may be restricted to personal water bottles. Hand washing or sanitizing will be a must between tips or sets. Will we all be wearing face coverings? Maybe. Probably. I can’t figure out a way that we can dance and still comply with Social Distancing – 6 feet strictions are lifted.

CENTRAL AREA COUNCIL sends their heartfelt best wishes to you and yours while we’re sitting this out.
Take time to call or somehow stay in touch with your fellow dance friends as a check-in with each other’s physical and mental well being. Reach out to other friends and relatives as well--the personal connection can mean so much.
On a personal note: I recently spent 10 days on vacation (while managing the Discovery Shop) at home alone evenings. Roger and our 16-year-old grandson took a road trip in our new/old 22-foot motor home, staying in campgrounds and, relatives’ driveways and enjoying a family get together on a houseboat on a California lake. Along the way, they have fished, biked, boonie romped, taken in the scenery, and experienced “togetherness”--memories to last a lifetime.
Stay Well and Be Kind, Kay Mahan
The BLUE AGATES have canceled dances through the rest of the year. Much as we want to see all our dancing friends, it’s just not going to happen for a while. Keep in touch with phone calls, texts, and emails--or handwritten cards and letters?! (Does anyone still do that?) Meanwhile, we hope all of you are staying safe and healthy and finding activities that help relieve the boredom of staying home. Circle 8 has allowed camping since July and it’s a great chance to see friends in a safe way. Looking forward, when we can all get together again!
Carel Edgerly,
You can still get your own Square Dance plate! Just go to your local DMV.

The BOOTS & LACES hope everyone has had a safe and healthy summer. It sure has been a hot one, but
it does cool off at night for sleeping. All of us have really missed our square dance activities and the fun summer demonstration dances.
The Boots & Laces have decided to become a Caravan Club. SO, if you are having a special dance, anniversary, fundraiser, dinner, etc., please let us know so we can plan on coming out to support your dance.
We are hoping to host the fall CPSC Dance on October 30th at the Kent Meridian Grange if we are able to have more than 50 people together. This will be the dance that the Jack Willison Award will be presented to this year’s Recipients by Jerry and Marlynne Olson. Please watch for more information to be sent the early part of October.
Please stay safe and healthy. Looking forward to seeing everyone soon.
All activities (and potluck goodies) for September have been cancelled due to restrictions placed upon Cedar Valley Grange where the JET STEPPERS dance in Maple Valley.
I’ve passed on the Taminations website (tamtwirlers.org) to our club so they can keep current on all the square dance calls.
Dave [email protected]
The PI-R SQUARES do not like this “no square dancing” any more than any of our fellow dancers. If it saves one life, I guess it is worth not dancing, wearing a face mask and staying home. Oops, forgot to mention washing our hands often with soap
and warm water and reciting happy birthday or hail Mary two times. None of us will forget this day and age.
All of our dances in March, April and May were canceled. Our June Dinner Dance not happen so who knows when we can get back to dancing.
Our Caller Andy Garboden hopes to have some mainstream workshops going sometime this summer or fall. Andy had to cancel workshops just after our class graduated due to the virus. Andy says he needs the practice just like us square dancers need to practice. Hopefully, soon we can get back to something close to normal.
The Pi-R Squares and the Wagon Wheels are still planning on combining square dance lessons this next year, but not until the first Tuesday in 2021. Stay calm and safe and keep smiling!
Note from Donna Rohde – Pi-R Square’s Club President, Terry Quinnett, celebrated his “80th” birthday on July 25th with dancers having their choice of wishing Terry a happy birthday with a “Drive-By” or “Social Distancing” on their lawn. Five vehicles chose to do the drive-by and numerous dancers wore masks and brought their lawn chairs visiting each other 6-feet apart enjoying Fellowship, Drinks and “80th” Cupcakes! It was so nice seeing our dance friends again!
Terry & Marilyn [email protected]
The WAGON WHEELS roll on as we all cope with Covid-19. At this time, Square Dancing is cancelled until the virus is no longer a threat, but the spirit continues. Our new Club President, Melanie Berg, has organized tailgate gatherings so members can enjoy the camaraderie of our square and round dance friends as long as the summer weather permits.
When we will all be on the dance floor again is an unknown, but all systems are in place for a speedy return once given the green light. Wagon Wheels will continue to dance at the Kent Meridian Grange with Square Dance callers Scott Coon and Stephen Cole on board and Round Dance cuer Lorraine Rouse assisted by husband John once the green light is given.
52 | FOOTNOTES www.squaredance-wa.org SEPTEMBER 2020
During this time of upheaval to our “normal” lives, some members have traveled, worked on home projects or taken up virtual bike riding challenges such as our member, Barbara Madison. I have been playing more outdoor pickle ball, but nothing replaces the great fun, exercise and friendship of Wagon Wheels and Square and Round Dancing. We look forward to a future when we can all once again “Circle Up” and “Flutterwheel” together. In that spirit, to keep up our square dance knowledge, I suggest going online to watch square dancing videos. At least that way we can remember the difference between a “Spin the Top” and a “Half Sashay”!
Let us pray that when fall arrives, Covid-19 will have left the planet and we are free once again to enjoy our great activity with all its benefits, including helping us stay fit. May all of you enjoy summer and keep moving so you will be ready when the music starts and you are called to the dance floor once again!

Even though Washington State is delayed in reopening due to the COVID-19 virus, the MT. BAKER
COUNCIL’s 2021 State Festival Committee wants you to know that we are still a go for this event. If you visit our web page – https://festival.wasdf.org – you can either register on-line or print off a form and mail in your registration. You may also register there with the Delta Marriott Hotel in Everett (host hotel). Lots of information is available on the web page. Early registration for the festival provides discounts, and early booking for your hotel room guarantees that the hotel will hold all our planned spaces for us. I’ve listed reports from 12 of our clubs as we look forward to the 2020-2021 dance year.
Ronald A. [email protected]
Hi fellow dancers. I’ve nothing really to report for A BLAST. There is still no dancing. So, we’re really missing everyone at this point. As soon as we can dance we will. I know the callers and cuers are working on making dancing safe. But, for now still NO DANCING.
Congratulaltions to Jan Doran Faulds, winner of the $50.00 fesitval registration from Footnotes!
Judy Corning [email protected]
At this point the CASCADE CROSSFIRES will not be holding a Council Dance. The venue is not open at this time and we do not know if they will be open in October. We don’t even know if we will be dancing in September. This is really getting to be trying. So many dancers are still really scared. Not sure what they are scared of?
Judy Corning [email protected]
The STANWOOD SASHAYERS would like to report for the September Footnotes that we are awaiting the opening of the State of Washington to be able to start dancing once again. We realize that the health and safety of all persons interested in Square Dancing is paramount to our returning to a floor near you. Please keep each other in mind as we patiently wait for the pandemic to end.
Lonny [email protected]
Greetings from RAINBOW SQUARES! We have missed you all! We are looking forward to the time we can re-open for dancing, however it will not be before the new year of 2021 for Rainbow Squares.
Meanwhile, we are each doing our part to mask-up, wash hands, keep social distances, and avoid crowds in an effort to help expedite Phase 4 and the possibility of re-opening for our favorite activity – SQUARE DANCING!
Lew Gaskill [email protected]
Unfortunately the DUDES & DOLLS’ annual mystery caravan scheduled for the 6th of June, fell victim to the COVID-19 crisis and was cancelled. Our annual campout, however, with some careful planning proceeded to occur on the first weekend of August. All of our activities were held outdoors. We held a silent auction with items displayed on tables all around the camping area, raising more than $1,300.00, an RC road race, bicycle races, several potlucks all served cafeteria style, a wine tasting event, and a karaoke session. We had ten rigs and individuals participating each day while staying in local hotels so it was a fun group, and despite the crisis we had a great safe campout experience.
We are still planning to hold our annual picnic at the parking lot of the Cedar Valley Grange where we normally dance. We will also for the first time be holding our annual live auction at the picnic rather than the campout due to the larger area for social distancing that this venue would allow.
The two auctions are our club’s fund raising activities to support our annual mystery caravan. We still don’t know when we will be able to resume our normal schedule of dancing, normally the 2nd, 4th and 5th Fridays at Cedar Valley Grange in Lynwood, from September through May. Resumption of dancing will depend on the Phase Recovery Level of Snohomish County. The club has made a decision not to dance in September, but we will review the counties’ progress and update our plans each month. Hope to see you on the dance floor soon……..

The WHIRLYBIRDS will not be dancing or having lessons in the month of September. We are still trying to be safe and healthy. We plan to send out regular updates on the Footnotes and Council Notes. SKY VALLEY WHIRLWINDS has continued to be productive during this unexpected hiatus to dancing. The grange we dance at has been cleaned. The closet that stores our decorations has been organized and sorted. We are also voting on investing in ways to improve the sound at the Tri-Way Grange. We are doing all we can to ensure that when dancing starts back up, we’ll have a clean and improved place to dance. We miss all our dance friends everywhere!
Tammy [email protected]
The SQUARE CROWS are going month by month with our dances. We had hoped the restrictions would be lifted by now, but alas that did not happen. We are probably not dancing until 2021 (if then…). We are also hoping to be able to do lessons in January, and again – that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. We’re still having our club meetings every month - by telephone conference. It’s not the same, but it’s working to conduct club business as necessary. Our dance venues are closed as are everybody else’s. We trust everyone is “masking up, staying 6 feet away from people and washing hands.” This is the only way we are going to get through this!
Lynn Von [email protected]

FREEWHEELERS had a recent phone and video conference call. During the meeting we made the sad decision to cancel the rest of the 2020 dances, consisting of: plus Sept. 20 “50’s Dance”, m/s Oct.4 “Oktoberfest Dance”, plus Oct. 18 “Welcome to Fall Dance”, m/s Nov. 1 “Harvest Dance”. And we also will not be hosting lessons during the 2020/2021 dance season. Hope you all stay healthy.

The HAPPY HOPPERS SQUARE DANCE CLUB has decided to cancel all our dances September 2020-December 2020 due to the on-going global pandemic. We have also decided to forego lessons for the 20-21 season. We will re-evaluate in December and hope to be able to dance January 2021-June 2021.
The Hoppers look forward to getting back out on the floor for Tons of Fun at the 2021 Washington State Square Dance Festival, June 18-19, 2021.
In the meantime, why not try one- or two-couple virtual square dancing to keep in shape? Callers across the country are posting on Facebook and dancers are joining in the fun. Virtual Square Dances and Square Dance Flyers are two of many groups you can join to try virtual square dancing, with levels from Simple BaMS (basic Mainstream) through the Challenge level. Several tutorials on how to get started are also available. You can enjoy Square Dancing without leaving the house until we can dance together again.

The FIDALGO FOGCUTTERS held a combined Board and General Meeting via ZOOM in July and voted to cancel our first two dances (in September and October) as they were booked with Canadian callers, and the border is still closed. We hope to reschedule Heather Reynolds and Brent Mawdsley in the near future. We also voted to not start plus lessons this fall. Additional decisions about events for November and beyond will be made at our next Board meeting in late September. Our club is in sound financial condition with good leadership, and we will reopen for dancing and learning when it is safe to do so.

SAMENA SQUARES, September WOW what a whirlwind we have been in since February. The SAMENA SQUARES CLUB members are missing dancing and meeting with each other; however, we are all on the same page about staying healthy and doing as the Governor has asked.
During this time, some of us have Zoomed, contacted each other on the phone etc.
It is the consensus that we will not be dancing again before January. Note that we miss all our friends and acquaintances from other clubs and look forward to dancing with everyone again. May God watch over us and guide us in this time of difficulty.

APPLELAND PROMENADERS havedecided to cancel their Anniversary Dance celebration. We will look
forward to celebrating with Ray Brendzy calling and Bill Holm cueing in October of 2021. We have made no plans for any dancing in the fall.
Some AP have visited Circle 8 this summer. It’s beautiful camping over there. Tom and Chris Clymer, our caller and wife, have put their new fifth wheel in the same space as other years so some of the AP dancers drive over and visit them on the weekends.
Appleland Promenaders wish to extend our deepest sympathy to Jackie Chase, Frank and Kathy Chase, and their family for the loss of Del Chase.
Connie Mulholland
Hi Everyone from the WHEATLAND WHIRLERS, This is a very short report. We hope that everyone is doing well and surviving without both the socializing and square dancing. I know that we’re missing everyone and are looking forward to when we’re able to dance again. Can you imagine square dancing six feet apart???
The Wheatland Whirlers will not be dancing this Fall and hope that we’ll be able to start dancing in 2021. Whether or not we’ll dance in January will depend on our county entering Phase 4 when things will again open up. HUGS to everyone. Stay healthy!
Judy Schock
4x8s September is upon us and we are all thinking of the events that has kept us apart. We all in Moses Lake and across the state have been touched by this year’s events. We wish you all health and happiness.
I am sure everyone has heard of our loss of Del Chase this summer. He and Jackie were involved in an awful car accident. Jackie suffered 7 cracked ribs and multiple contusions. That will take some time to heal but she is ever the trooper.
The Chase family held a loving outdoor graveside service on hot July 11th. Many people from across the state attended. After the service we held a gathering for family and friends in our back yard. Thank you to all that helped. The loss of Del leaves a hole in our hearts and square dancing that can never be filled.
We have a couple young people in our club engaged and planning their weddings. Some of us have been camping. It is good to spend some time out of the house and enjoy new scenery and friends. I think even the dogs enjoy getting away for a while.Respectfully submitted by
Patti Roberts

What can I say about my father-in-law, Del Chase. Pop, as I called him, was taken way too soon. He went to that giant square dance club in Heaven after a horrific auto accident on July 19th. Pop was greeted by so many of his square dance friends, including my parents, family and friends. I think that God is saying: “Oh, I think we are in trouble up here with Kenn (my dad) and Del. Lookout Heaven, here they come.”
Del was a long-time member of the 4 x 8s in Moses Lake. Treasure of both the club and North Central Council. He and his wife, Jackie, were very involved in their community. Del did so much for so many. He was also a long-time member of the Sociable Squares of Rainier Council.
His constant smile was contagious. He loved to tease people. The more he teased, I think, the more he liked you. But then, he pretty much liked everyone. Being in a square with him was always fun. He loved doing, what we called, a “Whoopy Square”. Just being silly throughout the tip. You had better keep on your toes. It al-ways made us laugh.
Del was a husband to Jackie, a father to Frank (Kathy) Marilyn (Mike) & Eddie (Stacy), grandfather to Megan (James) great grandfa-ther to Marley, uncle and friend (way too many to name). He truly loved his family. Always there when you needed him.
The entire family wants to thank everyone for their support, love and prayers. Having so many people who loved him makes it a bit easier to heal.
A get well, to Jackie Chase who broke 7 ribs in the accident that took Del. She is healing slowly and always has family by her side. You all have been so supportive of this sweet lady.
Heal fast Jackie, both physically and mental-ly. We all love you.

SOU’WESTER COUNCILArea Reporter

SOU’WESTER COUNCIL clubs are waiting impatiently for this virus to be tamed and conquered, but in the
meantime we will do all we can to stay safe and to keep others safe by following the rules: wash your hands often, stay six feet apart, and wear masks whenever you leave the house. We miss everyone and know that if everyone does their part we will be back to dancing. SQUARE ONE PLUS CLUB has certainly missed all our dancing and seeing everyone in the last six months. Who knows when we will be dancing again?
On a sad note Square One lost a member in May, Scott Smith who was a member since 2001 passed away on May 8th. Hopefully there will be a memorial service for him when the virus restrictions let up. He will be missed.
Since Lac-A-Do Hall has been closed to dancing they were able to refinish the floor. As of this point (End of July) there are no dances scheduled in the foreseeable future.
We hope that we can dance soon, but time will tell. We dance on the first Friday, third Sunday, and fourth Saturday.
We hope that everyone stays well and healthy and please wear your masks. Looking forward to dancing with you all soon.
Peggy Smithpegscott29
STARDUST DANCERS have not danced since early last spring and we miss the fellowship and dancing both. Prior to our final meeting, we did elect our officers for this dance year: Don Wilson (Judy) is president, Jack DeGoede (Debbie) is VP, Peggy (Fred) Rolf is secretary and Linda (Lonnie) Sycks is treasurer. The new officers took on their responsibilities July 1, 2020.
Stardust has had a couple of ZOOM gatherings, not meetings, where we could at least see one another on the small screen and talk about what we wish we were doing,
dancing, instead of staying socially distance from one another.
We don’t see that we will be dancing soon, but we keep up the hope that we will return to the activity we love as soon as it is safe. When we do return, we dance on the first and third Thursdays of each month at Catlin Grange in Kelso. Susan Healea is our cuer and teacher.
Hope to see you dancing again, but in the meantime, stay safe, wash your hands and wear your mask!

COUGAR SQAURES held its last dance for the past dancing season on March 7th. Since that time, we have tried to stay safe by staying home, wearing masks when out of the house and staying at least six feet away for others. (Not anyway to dance!)
We did not have our normal summer dances or demonstrations, so we have missed seeing each other and staying up on the news. Jim Raupp our caller/teacher had a health issue this summer, but we are happy to report that he is doing better now, (August 1st) and will not need any further treatment, just checkups regularly. Thank you for the thoughts and prayers during this time of social isolation.
Cougars new officers were elected prior to the shutdown. They are: President Paul (Patricia) Hagquist, VP Connie Alvord, Secretary Judy Wilson, Treasurer Shelley Haddix.
One exciting piece of news for Cougars is that Susan Healea has agreed to cue our dances on the first Saturday of each month, September through June and during the summer if and when available. We are looking forward to this addition to our club dances.

A second piece of happy news is the marriage of Virginia Tanner to Dave Trulson on Sunday, August 23rd at the Cowlitz Prairie Grange. Two pieces of good news this year is a real celebration. Congratulations to Virginia and Dave Trulson!
Cougars are looking forward to dancing again but know that this virus is very contagious and is airborne, so dancing is on hold until things turn around and we can dance safely.
Cougars will dance again when it is safe on the first Saturday of each month at St. Francis Parish Hall. Turn at the blinking light off the Jackson highway. Jim Raupp is our caller and Susan Healea is our cuer. Dancing begins at 7:30 p.m. Dance attire is admired, but everyone is invited to join when we resume dancing.
Don and Judy [email protected]
THE PRAIRIE STEPPERS have missed dancing for several months due to the Covid 19 pandemic. The cancellation of the 2020 National Convention in Spokane and all the local area dances has been a big disappointment to all of us.
We hope that all of you have been keeping safe and healthy. And that you have found other ways to occupy your time, keeping mind and body in shape.
The Prairie Steppers held a club officers meeting on July 25 at the home of President couple Tim and Terri Palumbo. Thanks very much to them for providing burgers in their lovely back yard. We reviewed the SPDFW Recommendations for Safe Return to Dancing. Since the first prerequisite is that our area should be in Washington State Safe Start Phase 4 which has been indefinitely delayed, the Prairie Steppers do not plan to resume dancing or lessons in the Fall. We will reassess the situation when our area has progressed to Phase 4.
Meanwhile, several Prairie Steppers have celebrated anniversaries in the past few months. Don and Marie Wood’s anniversary was on March 27. June is always a popular wedding month. Mike and Marion Freels anniversary was on June 10, Anthony and Danielle Ahrens anniversary was on June 1 and Dick and Diane Russell’s anniversary was on June 24. And Jim and Diana Findley’s anniversary was on August 21.
Plans are underway for the Washington State Square Dance Festival in Everett, WA on June 17 through 19, 2021. We hope to dance with you there.
