Where Does the Money Go?

Exciting things have happened since the launch of the 2017 Walk MS season back in November!

Ocrevus was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in March for use in primary

progressive and relapsing forms of MS. This is the first FDA-approved medication for primary

progressive MS! You – as part of the MS movement – helped the Society fund early work that led to the

development of this B-cell therapy!

This year the MS Society will fund about $40million in projects globally. We are excited that a new

project is being funded right here in NJ at the Kessler Foundation Research Center – in the amount of

$404,698! The majority of people with MS experience cognitive problems that can interfere with

everyday functioning. Rehablilitation researchers at Kessler will be training promising rehabilitation

professionals to conduct MS rehabilitation research. These trainees will emerge with the skills and

methodology they need to be competent and competitive investigators. In short- this funding will be

training future leaders in this growing and important area.

Here in New Jersey we are also working with individuals with MS on their needs TODAY! Over 30

individuals attended our full-day in-person program – Everyday Matters – increasing their knowledge of

positive psychology in June. And, in September we will have a full-day workshop entitled Live Fully,

Live Well, which will provide tools for individuals to develop their personal approaches to living well

with MS. And, over 75 people attended our Resilience programs this Spring – moving past coping and

learning to THRIVE with their MS.

These are just a few examples of how we are using the dollars raised through events

like Walk MS to ensure that individuals with MS can live their best lives.
