On 20
April, 2016, the Ministry of
Health in Zambia through the General Nursing Council (GNC) officially launched the national implementation of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for Nurses and Midwives.
Deputy Minister of Health Dr.Chitalu Chilufya during the launch at Lusaka’s Intercontinental Hotel noted that CPD will stimulate nurses and midwives to engage themselves into lifelong learning to gain the much needed skills and knowledge especially that health care systems and the disease burden are dynamic and evolving.
He said lifelong learning will help nurses and midwives to retain their capacity to practice safely, effectively, competently and legally within the evolving scope of practice.
GNC President, Dr. Ronia Mwape noted the importance of CPD in ensuring quality health care in the nursing profession. She further explained that Continuing Professional Development will now be a requirement for the renewal of the nursing license.
A list of CPD activities have been drawn and placed in three (03) categories according to the number of points the activity attracts. Each nurse and midwife is required to accumulate 20 points for annual license renewal.
Some of the institutions identified and recognized as CPD providers include Ministry of Health, Training institutions, ZUNO, JHPIEGO, Web based courses and Health facilities.
CPD project was piloted in Lusaka Province and has since been rolled out of four (04) other provinces to include Central, Southern, Luapula and Western Provinces.

ZUNO urges employers to uphold social
justice to ensure national development
The Zambia Union of Nurses Organisation (ZUNO)
says social justice is key to ensuring national
development and achieving poverty reduction.
ZUNO General Secretary Mr. Fray Michelo has stated
that by upholding social justice, employers would be
promoting fundamental values and rights of employees
which include freedom of association, the right to
belong to membership trade unions, collective
bargaining and protection of employees against
discrimination.
“Zambia cannot achieve the desired national
development without investing in the workforce through
sustainable decent work.” Mr Michelo has noted.
He said that as the nation celebrates workers in the
month of May, there is need for employers all over the
country to pledge towards creating sustainable and
decent employment in the country.
“Sustainable employment, decent work and social
justice are key elements to transforming Zambia as a
nation and also attaining the Sustainable Development
Goals.” Mr Michelo said.
The theme for the 2016 Labour Day celebrations which
fall on 1st May is “Achieving National Development
through Productive Decent Work, Sustainable Job
Creation and Social Justice.”
ZUNO ICN hold MDR/TB Workshop
Training for transformation (TFT) training workshop on the
prevention, care and control of TB/MDR‐TB was held at the
Mika Chamba Valley Exotic Hotel in Lusaka, from 18 – 21
April 2016.
Thirty (30) nurses from the ten (10) provinces of Zambia were
trained on prevention, care and control of TB, which remains
a leading cause of morbidity and mortality Worldwide.
The ICN TB Project Director, Ms Carrie Tudor, facilitated
Training for Transformation (TFT) in Lusaka, with the help
of Ms Inutu Mbangweta from Ministry of Health. ZUNO
Director of Programs and Professional Affairs, Mrs Jennifer
Munsaka, and ZUNO Programs Officer Mrs Rita Kalomo
coordinated the training.
The training was organised because of the vital role nurses
play in health care delivery and recognizing patients with
symptoms of TB, diagnosis, treatment and support.
