From the Potentate

Awesome AugustI covered a lot of miles, met many

new people and had the opportunity tosee a lot of people I have not seen in awhile. August started with DeMolayConclave and a great meeting with thePresident of Windom Area Shrine Club.Pilgrimages included a Ceremonial inSpicer, a corn feed in Canby, Duluth forthe MSA,Pine City for the East CentralShrine Club, Fergus Falls for the postcircus, and then wrapped up with thegolf stag in Wisconsin. Thanks to all whoshared some windshield time with methis month.

MembershipIn August we held a Ceremonial in

Spicer. We had a great day, all while cre-ating five new Nobles. Our next sched-uled Ceremonial will be in conjunctionwith Aad and Osman Temples, withGrand Lodge doing a Master MasonDegree in the morning. This is going tobe a great day for Minnesota Masonry, and will be on Saturday, November16th.We already have a good numberof petitions in hand. But,we need more.

RestorationsWe have been working with many

Shrine Clubs and Lodges around thestate in an effort to get their member-ship numbers back up.The quickest andeasiest way to get a new member, iswork from a list of men who were at

one time members of Zuhrah, but areno longer members. The Zuhrah Strongteam can supply you with a list of for-mer members who live in your area.Weare seeing men who are now ready tobecome active again. Give them a call, offer to buy them a cup of coffee andtalk with them. In most cases, they canget back into Zuhrah for $100.

Upcoming EventsThere are many great events on the

calendar this fall.A German Bierstube,an old-fashioned Barn Dance, aHalloween Costume Party, a Militarytable lodge. Please find the details forall of these in the ads in the Arabian.

Stated MeetingsThe September Stated meeting will

be at the Golden Valley VFW. Sametime schedule, $15.00 for bakedchicken dinner, reservations will berequired.

October Stated meeting will be atthe Crowne Plaza Hotel in Plymouth, the usual schedule will be adhered to,$15.00 for a spaghetti dinner. Againreservations will be required.

Paul Revere Masonic CenterAt the July stated meeting, the

Nobility gave their approval for thenegotiating committee to beginworking with the partnership operat-ing the Paul Revere Masonic Center. We have had an initial meeting. Wehave met with a general contractorabout remodeling costs. We have ameeting set with the city to discussthe liquor license issues. Things areprogressing, and we hope to be ableto present something to the Nobilitybefore the end of the year.

Midwest Summer SessionCongrats to the Zuhrah

Taking Action! The Canby Area Shrine Club recently sat down to work on

a list of Nobles who haven’t been seen in a while. They haven’ttalked to everyone yet, but so far 6 to 8 of them are on boardwith coming back.Working with Zuhrah Divan Member VerlRaap they have also come up with a list of individuals who arenot on the books with their Lodge and are working to createa one day deal for their return to Masonry and Shrine. Bothcontinue to work hard on helping to revitalize their Lodge byalso working on a list of those who have yet to join Masons.

Part of the plan in reaching out to them is to create and planactivities.“I honestly believe that we will start the flow going withfun events, things that people want to do,” says Verl Rapp. Oneof those events is the Canby ASC Reunion coming up onSaturday,September14th.While work continues on the details ofthe Reunion, both would like to see as many Nobles of Zuhrahas possible to come out and show support for their efforts.

Similar work is being done in Owatonna. They will be host-ing a Rush Night Wednesday, September 4th, and on Sunday,October 13th, Glenwood will be hosting their MembershipEvent. More information to follow.

ZUHRAH SHRINE UNITS

There is reason to believe that thoseso-called summer months are zipping onby too fast and ZARC is not responsiblefor that. This is the time to get our ZARCsleeves rolled up and we surely look for-ward toward adding more members intothe unit. There was a time I believe duringthe 1980’s that we had a ham radio com-munications network at the MinnesotaState Fair. Of course, it may have been asituation where other ham operators hada their hand in that action. If anyone hashad any memorabilia on that subject itwould be interesting to hear about it. Inthe meantime it is the ZARC unit’s inten-tion to get more involved with the func-tions of the Zuhrah Shrine activities.Webelieve we can establish and accomplishour goals with a bit more time and tokeep increasing our membership. Wecontinue to improve the unit withthoughts or actions from each of ourmembers to highlight their personal elec-tronic or communications ideas, and thatis where this ZARC unit can realize moreaccomplishments.

Note that PP Don Wurden, K0IYN, isworking on securing new badges for theZARC membership and updating themembership roster booklets. Our presi-dent Phil Epstein,WE0K,has been review-ing our future ZARC performances forimprovements. Bernie Wiklund, W0ZIF,has offered some thoughts toward com-municating with other Masonic gatheringson QSO/Echo Link Internet systems, where we can make contact with someEuropean Masonic brothers. Thatdepends on your Internet personal com-puter and the availability for such con-tacts.The Shriners have a communicationgoing on CQ100 14.310mhz 8pm CSTSunday evenings and on Echo Link as well, and that can be informational.

Some more interesting comments viabrother Bernie Wiklund were that thoseof you who are QST subscribers and mayhave seen the “Hints and Kinks” columnin the August 2013 issue. It had an articleentitled “Small Antenna Mount” whichinterested him enough to build it. It wasquite simple and consisted mostly of 2"PVC pipe and fittings. He says that it isalmost done with the exception of gluingand painting it silver, with an additionalclear coating. It will be filled with 20

I was on vacation a good part of thismonth. I missed the Annual Patrol Picnichosted by PP Gary Sibben and Lady Terri.Everyone I asked said they had a goodtime.

At the August Stated Meeting wediscussed paying for a meal at the cir-cus for Patrolers who sell Snow Conesat two shows. We did not vote on thisbecause we did not have a quorum.

We also discussed changing thebylaws to lower the number ofPatrolers need for a quorum.

We discussed the election of officers atthe October Stated Meeting. We are look-ing for a Vice President and a Secretary. Ihope there are many volunteers.

Thank You,Tim Thorbus

The month of August saw the CycleCorps schedule slow down a bit fromthe previous two months in regards tothe parade schedule, but the guys havenot been relaxing on their laurels (ortheir Harleys, for that matter). Practiceshave continued each Tuesday just tokeep the routines fresh and all of ourskills improving. There are a few moreparades out there this year that we justmight get on our schedule, so the CycleCorps needs to stay ready. The guysspent a few practices getting ready forthe MSCMCA competitions in Duluth, and most of us realized that it’s beenquite a while since we have driven anobstacle or slow ride course.

The Midwest summer session inDuluth was the highlight of our month. For a while, it looked like everything thatcould work against us did on this trek, with the typical failed clutch on the wayup and brakes that decided to stop work-ing right in the middle of a parade, but asalways, the Cycle Corps persevered. Afew ad-hoc decisions had to be madeduring the weekend to overcome someof the obstacles that were thrown ourway, but the guys were motivated to getback into the routine of representingZuhrah at the Midwest. Our attendanceincreased a bit more this year at Midwestthan it had been in the previous fewyears, and it looked like some of the guyswere seen taking notes and maybe plan-ning to borrow a few moves while theywere watching the two-wheeled drillcompetition.

This year’s Midwest Session also sawour very own Mike Parker move up theline of officers in the MSMCA, and it wasalso discovered that we have a “PoteSoaker” in our ranks when it comes tothe dunk tank, who also became some-what of a hired gun.A good time was hadby all, and the Cycle Corps is looking for-ward to an even better time with morerepresentation and possibly even back tohaving a competition team next year.

As we start getting ready for the fall, several of the guys have been talkingabout maintaining our weekly Tuesdaypractice schedule. It never hurts to stayfresh, and you never know when wemight get a new rookie, so there’s a goodchance that we will be out in Hopkinseach week until the weather decides tono longer co-operate. Some weeks mayfocus on old and maybe some newparade routines, while others may beskills and drills, and others yet might be asimple “lets get together and go for aride.” If you are interested in joining uson any given week, reach out to one ofthe Cycle Corps guys for details.

Our September stated meeting will beon the 3rd, and the following month isscheduled for October 1. As of ourAugust meeting, it looks like the next fewagenda will be filled with our typical falldetails: wrapping up our financial, budg-eting for the winter, and getting out offi-cers for next year nominated and elect-ed.There has also been a lot of discus-sion lately regarding uniform, bikes, anddetails for next years calendar.Stay tunedfor details on that. Better yet, join us forone of our meetings. All are welcome.

The Cycle Corps continues to practiceeach Tuesday at our regular practice facil-ity Eisenhower Elementary School inHopkins. The school is located onMinnesota Rt 7,just west of 169.We prac-tice every Tuesday at 6:30. If you are inter-ested or just curious about joining theCycle Corps, please feel free to join us,bike or no bike. Even if you are not inter-est in getting on a bike and doing all kindsof crazy maneuvers, but are just lookingfor something to do on a Tuesday night, feel free to grab a lawn chair and come onout to watch us. It only makes us betterto practice in front of an audience.

Our monthly unit stated meetings areusually held the first Tuesday of everymonth. We meet at a place we affection-ately call the “Man Cave.” Thanks to “TooTall” for putting together such greataccommodations. The address is 27 8thAve N, Hopkins. Our meetings start at7:00 p.m., but if you wish to attend anddon’t find us there, it just means that themeeting will start a little late because weare having too much fun at practice.Anyone with any interest in joining theCycle Corps, or even simply interestedin hanging out with some really coolguys, is welcome to attend our monthlystated meetings.

Hey nobles, the Corps is still (andalways) looking for a few more goodriders. If you are new to Zuhrah,or evenif you’ve been around for a while andjust looking for something new to do,please feel free to come to one of ourpractices (with or without a bike) orany of our stated meetings and accom-pany us for some good times, greatcamaraderie, and some of the mostexciting things you can ever imaginedoing—on two wheels, that is.

ZUHRAH SHRINE UNITS

The Horsemen get together at leastevery Wednesday afternoon-evening andmost Sunday afternoons at our ranch at4505 County Road 92, just south ofRockford. We start gathering around1500 on Wednesdays and always have ameal about 1900. There is typically alunch adventure on most Sundaysaccompanied by riding at our ranch. Ifyou are reading this, you are welcome tovisit us! If you would like to see for your-self what a dynamic group theHorsemen are, please call Provost SamSchwartz @ 612-418-5379 and arrangea time to come to the ranch.

Due to the deadline for publishingthe Arabian, we were not able toreport on all the activities that went onin July, so we are going to do that here.

The first parade after the cut-off was inBelle Plaine on Saturday, July 20th. Thiswas the second year we were invited toparticipate. Even though there wereother horse units in the parade, we dosomething different, and the crowdappears to enjoy us. The parade is onelong straight ride down the street, withjust as long a ride to get back to the semi.So it’s easy. One thing about Belle Plaineis there are a number of nursing homeand senior citizens residences along thestreet, and the nurses and workers in thehomes set up viewing areas for their peo-ple. We, as good and kind heartedShriners, made sure we stopped at eachone to salute the residents.Thereby theycould and would come up to the horsesand pet them. We always got a bigapplause from them. The weather wasideal for a parade so the crowd was quitelarge, which gratifying to us. The onedown note to the day was for the secondtime in two years Bro Rindal requiredsome EMT attention. But he was OK.Speaking of OK,Bro.Bill Leadens continuesto recover and has returned to the ranch.

The Horsemen made a successfulappearance at the Zuhrah Ice CreamSocial on Wednesday, July 24th. TheHorsemen have received abundantaccolades for what we brought to theevent at Edina’s Centennial Lakes Park. And you should have seen Bro. Palmertrying to hoist a 110 lb.“kid” up onto ahorse … believe it or not, with a lot ofhelp, he succeeded!

The next parade was one we had neverparticipated in, Slice of Shoreview, onSaturday, July 27th. Due to the efforts of

Sidemeat, who found us a sponsor, sevenriders made the parade, plus ground crew.Again this is a long straight parade upVictoria Avenue, and an equally long rideback to the semi (we have to find paradesthat go in circles). This day the weatherwas not so nice. It was cloudy with a lightbreeze when we stepped off, but immedi-ately turned to rain with a stronger wind. The wiser riders brought their rain slick-ers and the not so wise ones (me includ-ed) proceeded to get wet. The paraderoute is quite nice and on a nicer daywould be a pleasant ride (maybe next year, right Brad). It was quite amazing howmany people stayed to view the parade inthose conditions, but they had their hood-ies, umbrellas and the occasional tent. Onthe whole it was a good day.

The last parade was in Shakopee onSunday,August 4th.This was also a paradewe have not been in before.Ten horseswith riders and support staff (pooperscoopers) went down there, and had agreat parade. There was a large crowdand the weather was just the type ofweather you would want to ride in.Theresponse from the crowd and the paradeorganizers indicate they would like tohave us back next year.

The drill team keeps practicing to staysharp. After their victory at theInternational we cannot afford to let ourguard down at the Midwest (again dead-lines prevent us from reporting on theMidwest until next month, but I amlooking for good results). We will haveten horses going to Duluth, plus non-rid-ers, so ZSHP will have a very big pres-ence there. Aside from the parade anddrill competition a pre-convention BarnParty is planned plus the usual get-togethers with the other horse units.

QUESTION: How many horsemendoes it take to build a fire pit?

ANSWER : 2 to dig out the area, put down timber borders and placethe fire pit AND 10 Horsemen tosupervise the work.

If you have not yet beenout to the ranch to take alook at the newest ameni-ty to life on the ranch, come on out and join thegang around the fire pit, have a drink and maybetoast a marshmallow.Maybe this will get theguys out of the upstairsclubroom (saloon). This a

perfect place to sit and chat in late sum-mer and fall. And it might be a good placefor some people to eat at our brunches. And Ill. Sir Al demonstrated 07AUG thatit is most desirable setting for cigar smok-ing.There are plans in place to create asmall wood shed to provide adequate fuelfor the pit.

Cowboy wisdoms from Bro. WillRogers:

1- Never miss a good chance toshut up.

2- Always drink upstream from theherd.

Here are reminders of upcomingevents. Sunday, September 8th, is ournext brunch, with food, horsebackrides, and, if there is a demand, a haywagon ride out into the pasture.

As we look at the calendar and seeLabor Day just around the corner, it’stime to take a moment to reflect on the2013 Cobra Corps Parade Season. In anutshell, it was awesome,as we participat-ed in 13 parades, starting with Paynesvilleand NE Minneapolis in mid-June, andwrapping up with Watkins, Pine City andLeSueur the first weekend in August.Averaging 10 riders per parade,we stroveto put on a quality demonstration of pre-cision driving as we entertained paradegoers of all ages across the state.LeSueur, which over the years has grownto love the Cobra Corps (or, as theParade Chairman told us at the start ofthe parade,“You guys make our parade.”),was a great end to our season as manyfriends and family travelled with us towatch the parade and then partake of thepost parade corn feed in the city park. Also, thanks to Jerry Oliver and the PipeBand for hosting us for a delicious dinnerat the Oliver cabin on Rush Lake after thePine City parade. All in all, 2013 was oneof our best parade seasons ever.

Kudo’s again to our Unit Captain, Rob“Mayor” Fendler, for keeping us organ-ized throughout the year, and ParadeCaptain Dan “Crusher” Lind, for doing anawesome job of getting us into the rightparades, leading a great majority of theparades, picking up the check after eachparade, and (most importantly) makingsure that we did everything possible toensure a return invitation in 2014. And ahuge thanks to all of our members whoshowed up at parade after parade withtheir cars in great shape and ready to puton a show for the local crowds. Duringthe summer we all focused hard onworking together as a precision team, and it really showed the last weekend ofthe season. It’s hard to believe that it willbe nine more months before we fire upthose engines again and lay some morerubber on the road.

So what comes next for the CobraCorps? Well, we’ll start with great rep-resentation at the Pote’s Golf Stag, withfour teams comprised of members andtheir guests. We’re lobbying Bristol Ridge

to let us use our cars as golf carts, butapparently they’re concerned (legitimate-ly) about the impact a “cookie” will haveon their sand traps and greens.Whatever we’re driving that day, wepromise to only perform maneuvers thathave been pre-approved by the head pro.And we’re all looking forward to ourannual parade wrap-up meeting on Brad“Buster” Bolz’ pontoon on Prior Lake(unfortunately I missed that meeting lastyear, so I’m not real sure what to expect, but I’m sure that it will be fun).

Thanks to the efforts of Scottie“Scooter” Langguth, the Cobra Corps ishaving a fishing expedition the first week-end in September, with six or so of ourbrothers spending a long weekend onthe Lake of the Woods as they work upthe biggest lies they can muster. There’ssure to be some great stories to beshared when they return to the big city.Hopefully next month’s Arabian will begraced with photos of some whoppers –whether real or photo-shopped.

Finally, on Monday, September 16th,you’ll find most of the Cobra Corps fam-ily at the “5th Annual DanO Golf Outingand Banquet,” held in memory of long-time Cobra Corps member and ParadeCaptain Dan Olsen. The event, which willbe held at Minnesota Valley Country Clubin Bloomington, can only host 148 golfers, but we have room for 300+ at the ban-quet, so consider joining us for a fun day(whether you golf or not) as we raisefunds to support the Minnesota affiliate ofthe National Alliance on Mental Illness. For more information, contact Mark“Lips” Olsen at 612-749-1234 or emailhim at [email protected]. Or youcan log on to http://www.danofund.org/to register.

As mentioned last month, Mayorwalked his daughter Lindsay down theaisle on her wedding day as she and herhusband, Travis Lorenz, became newly-weds on July 26th. And baby showerseason is in full swing for Nick “Goose”Olsen and his wife Shannon as they awaitthe arrival of their first child in lateSeptember. The entire Cobra Corpsfamily wishes nothing but the best toLindsay and Travis as they start their newlives together, and Goose and Shannon asthey eagerly anticipate the miracle of thebirth of their child.

If you or anyone you know is inter-ested in joining our Cobra Corps fam-ily, please contact Rob Fendler at 952-440-4639 or email him [email protected].

LOOKING BACK The August meeting was at Billy’s in

Anoka. A little over 30 of us filled therunway between the kitchen and thepatio so it is not the most private placeto have a meeting in summer. Not muchin the line of an actual meeting but itappeared everyone had plenty of timefor socializing.

Wayne LaMusga was absent, twistedhis back and is on the wounded list. StanKowalski was back for this meeting inspite of needing a couple of canes to getaround, and Bob Bish is close to getting abad knee replaced.Boy,there seems to bea lot of “fall’in apart” going on. KathyAnderson said Karl is turning 75 inSeptember, so a birthday cake will be inorder at the Fish Fry.

LitchfieldWe had our annual summer picnic. It

went off really well; we only had onecausality, a fruit tree of Rich Lyons (OURHOST). I do not know why he planted itright in the parking area, but someonebacked in to it.The tree was saved withsome help from the quick response team.Maybe it was one the divan memberswho was there? I know one of them hasbeen known to have mishaps with hismotor cycle! NAME WITHHELD, YOUKNOW WHO YOU ARE? You owe me abeer for information being withheld!

Sounds like The Candy Man Carl got alittle out of hand at the party, nothingthat our Prez could not handle. It wasnice to see all the members who showedup. Rich & Birdie did a fantastic job, asalways. The ladies brought many differentgoodies to share.

Ah! September. Back to our regularschedule of third Wednesday Luncheons. Thus 18 September, 11:30 a.m. at theHopkins VFW with lunch (meat loaf)served at 12 noon (Board meeting at11:00). The Shrine Children’s Hospitalhas promised a program to update us onhappenings with our “world’s greatestcharity.” Our other regular gathering, also at the Hopkins VFW, is the Nobles’Luncheon on 26 September at 11:30 a.m.

These past several weeks have hadtwo memorable WSSC events: ourPresident’s “Mystery Trip” and theMarshall Area SC weekend. Now notethat I am promoting a change to the title“Mystery Trip” to President’s Trip. It couldbe a mystery of course if we had a busand we didn’t promote anything morethan its secrecy. But, in my memory,we’vealways disclosed the destination, promot-ed the event and mostly driven via car.Anyway, this year’s President’s trip was atthe American Swedish Institute and Ibelieve a four-star event. The ASI doesthemselves proud, from the time ofcheck-in at their new Nelson CulturalCenter, through our tour of the TurnbladMansion by two outstanding docentguides, and winding up with a memorableluncheon with our group in our own

dining room.To my way of thinking thiswas one of our finer President’s Trips.

Then our annual weekend in Marshall:by my count we had eight couples plustwo more from the Divan. As planned wehamburgered Friday, lunched at theAmerican Legion Saturday where someof us played Bingo, and feasted on steakand excellent corn-on-the-cob and fixins’Saturday evening.Barb and I spent part ofthe afternoon at the Lyon County Fairwhere this old farm boy was surprised atthe many Red Holstein cows in theexhibit. Red Holsteins? Seems like anoxymoron to me, but there they were, about 20 of them. One difference thisyear was the absence of the GermanBand. For many years they have jour-neyed to Marshall and entertained us. Ihad a poignant letter early in July fromtheir leader saying they were not able tomake it this year, that several of theirmembers were no longer up to thetrip.Well, venerable German Band, wehave enjoyed your music these thirtyplus years and you were missed.

Other events to be cognizant of inSeptember include the Zuhrah StatedMeeting which will be at the GoldenValley VFW (yes, our auld haunt) onthe 13th, the Horsemen’s Brunch onthe 8th where several of us meet eachquarter—you’ll find us upstairs beforepartaking in the meal, the HonoredLadies Luncheon on the 21st and theGerman Bierstube on the 28th.
