Empowering women through service and advocacy Hello Members A quick report to end my first year. I have been busy writing the Annual Report which I will share with you at the AGM, but I have been astonished at the variety and quantity of achievements these past twelve months. Our Board meeting the other night was overflowing with thoughts for new projects, fund rais- ing and various advocacy ideas so I am anticipating another busy year and also a small influx of new members to build our numbers again. It is also a time to reflect on the mem- bers we are losing. Regretfully Anita Lowe and Pam Vine are not renewing their memberships for the coming year. Both have clearly stated their intentions to continue to support and to continue their great interest in our Club. It is time- ly to thank both Pam and Anita for their support, contributions and fellowship over the years and I know we will all be sorry to see them leave the Club. Anita is keen to continue her involvement in our history pro- ject. The AGM will be a great opportunity to cele- brate our achievements, recognition and awards for various members. I will be sorry to lose Raelene, Maggie and Larrie from the Board. Each has contributed so much during their time of office. Thank you all. However, I look forward to welcom- ing the new Board members and moving forward into an exciting year. Hope to see you at the AGM In Zonta fellowship, Jan From our president …….. Samuel Johnson won the Gold Logie recently and he highlighted this Charity which was set up for his sister Connie. "Connie is vibrant, loving, compassionate, tough and inspiring. She's a mother of two beautiful boys. She's 37 years old. And she's dying of Breast Cancer. This is her third battle with cancer. At the age 11 Connie, with the help of early detection and chemotherapy, fought off a very rare and aggres-sive bone tumour in her leg. At 22, she overcame a tumour in her womb, again with the help of early detection and treatment. This time Connie has Breast Cancer and it’s terminal. It has spread to her lungs, liver, pelvis, spine and knee—her life expectancy is 6-12 mo." The goal is to raise $10M toward Breast Cancer and they are asking people to donate their spare change. Club history - Maggie and Anita did an interview with Anne Young, which went well but may need to be re-peated. Zonta Club of Mitchell Charter Presentation Dinner - April 8.

Bernadette and I attended the inauguration dinner for The Zonta club of Mitchell held in the old Kilmore town hall which is now occupied by a restaurant called Penny's. Drinks and canapés were served downstairs for half an hour then dinner upstairs.

We sat with two of the Club’s new members , a potential member and one representative from Ballarat and an-other from Geelong club. There were lots of speeches in between courses by Zonta luminaries and 2 Federal members - one was Fiona Nash the female Deputy head of the National party.

The new club's Board was introduced and the President spoke with gratitude for the help they had received from members of the Kyneton and another club. The evening concluded with a slice of a fabulous cake made by the treasurer. It had turned into a wet and windy night and we were glad to arrived home safely. Antiques and Collectables Valuation Day April 22 2017

A special thank you to Sally and Bendigo Pottery Staff for the use of the venue and their helpfulness in direct-ing potential customers to the Zonta table. Special thanks also to Dr Harry Glenn who gave his time freely in such an informative and diplomatic way. For the casual observer (Jan) it was great to see a couple of faces light up in a shiny way when the valua-ble really did prove to be VERY valuable. and… one mindful lady I spoke to said she was pleased she would not need to be heartbroken if the much loved vase she kept on display was accidentally broken or chipped… how was that for positivity!! A great day overall. Thanks everyone. Congratulations Lyn, Sally and the Fundraising committee.

Zonta International News

ZI Annual report: “I am proud of the work we achieved last year, and I am looking forward to what we will achieve in the 2016-2018 Biennium," said International President Sonja Hönig Schough. "Through our partnerships with United Nations agencies, we are contin-uing to reduce early marriage and early pregnancy in Niger and are contributing to the elimination of obstetric fistula and the reduction of maternal mortality, morbidity and sexual violence in Liberia. We are also working to create opportunities for vul-nerable and excluded girls to realize their rights to an education in a secure and protective environment in Madagascar and to create sustainable foundations for addressing the link between human trafficking and foreign labor migration of women and girls in Nepal." ZONTA INTERNATIONAL SUPPORTS UNFPA….. Statement from Zonta International President Sonja Honig Schough and Past International President and International Advocacy Chairman Maria Jose Landeira Oestergaard

“Zonta International is dismayed to learn of the United States’ decision to withdraw funding for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), a decision that will ultimately have devastating consequences for women and girls world-wide.

For more than 10 years, Zonta International has proudly partnered with UNFPA to deliver critical lifechanging and life-saving programs for the most vulnerable women and girls, improving health, eradicating violence against women and ending all forms of harmful practices. In Liberia, Zonta International has partnered with UNFPA to treat and prevent obstetric fistula by providing surgical treatment for women and girls living with this condition and reintegrating them back into their communities, equipped with the knowledge and skills to lead full and productive lives. Fistula is a devastating but preventable childbirth injury usually caused by pro-longed, obstructed labor without timely medical intervention. In most cases, the baby is stillborn; and often the mother is left paralyzed. In addition to the devastating physical consequences, women suffering from fistula are stigmatized and abandoned by their families and marginalized by their communities. In Niger, Zonta International has partnered with UNFPA to reduce child marriage, and to help adolescent girls in Niger develop their health, social and economic assets, know their rights and be in a strong position to defend them and be safer and have protection against violence. Child marriage is a form of sexual and gender-based violence with harmful physical, social and economic effects including the detrimental impact in the societies of early pregnancies. Niger has the highest child marriage rate in the world with 77 percent of girls married by age 18 and 30 percent married by age 15. Forty-two percent (42%) of ado-lescent girls in Niger give birth before the age of 17, a high proportion of school-aged girls are not in school and 73 percent of

adolescent girls, ages 15-19, cannot read or write. These programs are examples of UNFPA’s work in making a difference for thousands of women and girls worldwide. Today UNPFA works in more than 150 countries and terri-tories covering more than 80 percent of the world’s popula-tion. Thanks to partnerships with organizations like Zonta International and the critical support of governments, UN-FPA was able in 2016 to save the lives of more than 2,300 women from dying during pregnancy and childbirth and to ensure more than 1,250 fistula surgeries, among many other achievements. Today and every day, Zonta International stands in support of UNFPA and its work to promote and protect the rights of
