October 2012 Issue #4265 (makes it sound like we have done a lot!) Welcome to our monthly “zine”, produced and published by MCVI stu- dents! Each month we will be entertaining you with art, writing and who knows what else will show up! We will have sections on music, art, skate- boarding, poetry and other projects for MCVI students to participate in. Lend us your voice and show us your creativity. Each zine will give stu- dents the opportunity to submit a wide range of neat things to be published in future issues. Look for our zines at the beginning of each month in front of the school and in the library. In this issue, you can learn about the AWESOME benefits of doodling, learn how to tattoo an AWESOME banana, see some of the AWESOME skateboards created by our own students, learn about what is AWESOME in our school, participate in an AWESOME anti-bullying crowdsourcing songwriting project, submit AWESOME music reviews, read some AWE- SOME poems and MORE! I may be using the word AWESOME too much, but after all, this is the ZINE OF AWESOMENESS! Here’s the only down side to this issue– too much has been written by me (a boring old teacher) so we need your help. This is a call out to all writ- ers, everyone creative and all MCVI students who want to be a part of something, well, AWESOME. There are envelopes located outside of room 113, room 258, the library and the front office. In these envelopes you should submit your original songs, poems, short stories, artwork, mu- sic reviews or anything that you think would be great in a zine and should be shared. In fact, we would be HONOURED to have you contribute. And the plus side is that you won’t have to hear me ramble on and on trying to fill up space in the next issues of the zine so that you have something semi interesting to read during SMART on Wednesdays. Front page full with big pictures and lots of text., check. Hope to see those submissions! Ms. Wyatt Stick IT Revolution The power of a positive message can not be underestimated. Last year, art students anonymously posted random post-it-notes around the school to re- mind us all about the positive things in life. Some of these notes were secret- ly hidden and have yet to be discov- ered! What impact does a positive re- minder about how great you are, or even to just smile, have on MCVI stu- dents? I see the inspiring quotes doo- dled on students’ binders and plas- tered on friends’ facebook pages and they always make me feel better about myself and give me a little boost to the day. Have a look at the ones we made!

The power of a positive message can not be underestimated. Last year, art students anonymously posted random post-it-notes around the school to re-mind us all about the positive things in life. Some of these notes were secret-ly hidden and have yet to be discov-ered! What impact does a positive re-minder about how great you are, or even to just smile, have on MCVI stu-dents? I see the inspiring quotes doo-dled on students’ binders and plas-tered on friends’ facebook pages and they always make me feel better about myself and give me a little boost to the day. What inspiring message do you want to share with others? Write it here. Share it by placing it in an envelope outside of room 113, room 258,

the library or the front office!

On my locker there is writing. It says “Mel”. I use this to find my locker because I don’t remember the locker number. I chose to

take a picture of this because it is a big part of my school life and helps me everyday

(except Saturday and Sunday!)

Vending machines are awesome. It’s the only metal box that when you put money into it, snacks come out. When you’re a skater, vending machines are just amaz-ing. It’s a portable store….where you can buy skittles. In our school we have a

vending machine where we pretty much only buy skittles. MCVI’s favourite candy, and if it wasn’t for vending machines, we wouldn’t have a favourite candy.

Be the Change A call out to all MCVI students…..

Bullying Prevention Awareness Week

November 19th – 23rd, 2012

Make a difference. Participate in our school-wide songwriting project to put an END to BULLYING. With all of the resources we have available to educate us on how to stop bullying, all of the stories that are shared about the effects of bullying and all of the tragic events that have been revealed through news stories about school aged kids, bullying still happens. It’s time for all of us to BE THE CHANGE and participate in our school song writing project aimed at raising awareness of the issues surrounding bullying and what we can do to stop it.

We need your help to write an anti-bullying anthem that will be performed and recorded by our SASS club (School Alliance of Student Song Writers). This song will be played over the announcements for everyone to hear.

What we need from you: Students are invited to write an original song lyric (a line or two) about bullying, what we can do to stop it, how we can help others, and really just treat each and every person with kindness.

Give us your original lyrics by writing them below or on a separate piece of paper and place them inside the enve-lopes located around the school. Envelopes are placed on the door outside of room 113, room 258, outside of the office and in the library by the front entrance. You can remain anonymous or put your name on it. With the guidance of professional musicians, SASS will then take these lyrics, put them together, write music, perform and record the song for National Bullying Prevention Awareness Week. Lend us your voice for this amazing project!

Despite the fact that we have all witnessed the horrible effects of bullying on youth of all ages, it still continues. As great a place as MCVI is, I know that bullying still happens in our school. I have had friends that have felt exclud-ed, others that have been singled out and judged by gossip, friends that have been picked on and have known oth-ers that have been hurt by such horrible comments made about them. I myself have witnessed bullying at our school and have too been a victim of bullying. I am writing to you because I want people to know how it feels, what we can do to prevent it and change our ways at our school and other schools. I was hoping that others could share their stories here with everyone so that we can all begin to understand what is happening at school everyday. I was hoping that we could all be brave enough to come forward and give victims a voice to speak out against bullying. Perhaps students could share their stories in your zine for everyone to read– even if the stories are written anony-mously. If hope that you will consider my suggestion as I do think it will help everyone to find real ways that we can stop the bullying. Thank you. StudentX

Dear StudentX, First of all, I’d like to commend you on your bravery and your willingness to help others. I think that this is an incredible suggestion and I will be happy to take on this project. I am going to invite MCVI students to please share their stories and experiences about bullying at our school, through grade school and even outside of school. It is my hope that through these stories we can all put a face on the issues in our own community and can bring healing, support and initiate positive action. So please, share your stories with us. Share with us how we can help, what needs to change. Share with us how it has affected your school life and your personal life. Share with us how you have overcome these challenges. Submit your stories anonymously through the form on the next page and drop it off in one of the envelopes outside of room 113, 258, the library or the front office. I thank you all in advance for your bravery. Sincerely, Abbey.

life. 20-50 per cent said bullying can be a good thing

(makes people tougher, is a good way to solve prob-lems, etc.).

25-33 per cent said bullying is sometimes OK and/or that it is OK to pick on losers.

61-80 per cent said bullies are often popular and enjoy high status among their peers.

Try This: Tattoo A Banana!

What you need: A banana A push pin or needle Your creativity! Art can be found everywhere… and why not make it edible! You can just wing it or premake a design or your own choosing. When you first start “tattooing” your banana, the lines may not be very dark… but wait ten minutes or so and your image will ap-pear! A few hints… The deeper you push your pin in your banana the darker your im-age will be. The closer your dots are together, the darker the lines. Wait to see what happens after 24 hours! Surprise someone with a secret message on their lunch!

Random Banana Facts (taken from www.chiquitabananas.com) Did you know bananas, apples & watermelons float in water? You can use the inside of a banana peel to polish patent leather shoes. A man in India once ate 81 bananas in a half an hour. Bananas don't grow on trees. They're actually a giant herb. Bananas are one of the few foods to contain the 6 major vitamin groups. If you peel a banana from the bottom up you won't get the string things. Those stringy things are called phloem (pronounced FLOM).
