The Lord’s Day September 13, 2020 The Sanctuary Ten-Fifteen a.m.

A HOLY CALLING Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me His prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity. - 2 Timothy 1:8-9

PRELUDE — “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”………………………………….. arr. Schrader WELCOME TO WORSHIPERS HYMN OF GATHERING — “The Master Has Called Us” ……….. Sarah Doudney The Master has come, and He calls us to follow the track of the footprints He leaves on our way; Far over the mountain and through the deep hollow, the path leads us on to the mansions of day: The Master has called us, the children who fear Him, who march ‘neath Christ’s banner, His own little band; We love Him and seek Him, we long to be near Him, and rest in the light of His beautiful land.

The Master has called us; the road may be dreary, and dangers and sorrows are strewn on the track; But God’s Holy Spirit shall comfort the weary; we follow the Savior and cannot turn back; The Master has called us: though doubt and temptation may compass our journey, we cheerfully sing: “press onward, look upward,” thru much tribulation; The children of Zion must follow their King.

The Master has called us, in life’s early morning, with spirits as fresh as the dew on the sod: We turn from the world, with its smiles and its scorning, to case in our lot with the people of God: The Master has called us, His sons and His daughters, we please for His blessing and trust in His love; And thru the green pastures, beside the still waters, He’ll lead us at last to His kingdom above. A RESPONSIVE MEDITATION OF THE LORD’S PRAYER ... Rev. Walter R. Bowie Leader: Our Father, who art in Heaven, People: Help us to believe this day that there is power to lift me up which is stronger than all things that hold us down. Leader: Hallowed be they Name, People: Help us to be sensitive to what is beautiful, and responsive to what is good, so that day by day we may grow more sure of the Holiness of life in which we want to trust. Leader: Thy kingdom come,

People: Help us to be quick to see, and ready to encourage, whatever brings the better meaning of God into that which otherwise might be common ground of the uninspired day. Leader: Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven, People: Help us to believe that the ideals of the spirit are not a far- off dream, but a power to command our loyalty and direct our lives here on our real earth. Leader: Give us this day our daily bread, People: Open the way for us to earn an honest living without anxiety, but let us never forget the needs of others, and make us want only that benefit for ourselves which will also be their gain. Leader: And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. People: Make us patient and sympathetic with the shortcomings of others, especially of those we love; and keep us sternly watchful only of our own. Let us never grow hard with the unconscious cruelty of those who measure themselves by mean standards and so think they have excelled. Keep our eyes lifted to the highest; so that we may be humbled; and seeing the failures of others be forgiving, because we know how much there is of which we need to be forgiven. Leader: Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, People: Let us not go carelessly this day within the reach of any evil we cannot resist; but, if in the path of duty we must go where temptation is, give us the strength of spirit to meet it without fear. Leader: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. People: And so in my heart may I carry the knowledge that Thy great- ness is above me and around me, and that Thy grace through Jesus Christ, my Master is sufficient for all my needs. Unison: May it be so, Lord! Amen! CHORUS — “Lord I Want to be a Christian” … 18th Century African American Spiritual Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart, in my heart, Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart, in my heart. In my heart, in my heart, Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart, in my heart. COMMITMENT HYMN — “Though I May Speak With Bravest Fire”………. Hal Hopson Though I may speak with bravest fire, and have the gift to all inspire, and have not love; my words are vain; as sounding brass, and hopeless gain.

Though I may give all I possess, and striving so my love profess, but not be giv’n by love within, the profit soon turns strangely thin.

Come, Spirit, come, our hearts control, our spirits long to be made whole. Let inward love guide every deed; by this we worship, and are freed. CLOSING WORDS BENEDICTION CHORAL BENEDICTION — “Lord I Want to be a Christian” … 18th Century African American Spiritual Lord, I want to be more loving in my heart, in my heart, Lord, I want to be more holy in my heart, in my heart. In my heart, in my heart, Lord, I want to be like Jesus in my heart, in my heart. POSTLUDE— “Go Forth in Peace”.................................................... REMINDERS FOR MAKING OUR PLAN WORK 1. Be in prayer for our church. Pray that we will be safe in our gathering. 2. Stay home if you are ill, if you have symptoms of illness, or if your exposure to

COVID-19 indicates a time of quarantine. 3. While we do love to see everyone here each week, please do not come to activi-

ties if you do not feel comfortable doing so. We will continue live streaming our worship, some classes are zooming lessons, and our pastoral staff is always a phone call or other form of contact away. You can stay connected to ZBC in ways other than physical attendance.

4. Respect the changes in worship from our past routine—social distancing, wear-ing masks, offering plates on stand, bulletins on stands, making the exchange of peace without touch, not standing for hymns, singing loudly or using hymnals, sanitation stations and other changes. These changes have been made using the best guidance for help persons to reengage in public gatherings in a safe and responsible manner.

5. Wear your masks out of respectful concern for others. When we are passing one another on Sundays, we need to be safe and to help one another feel safe. When you are in place and confident you are more than six feet from others, you may drop the mask.

6. There is ample room for social distancing in the Sanctuary with our new plan that divides us into fourths. Choose your seats without someone directly in front of or behind you and leave six feet between you and your family and the next per-sons or family on the pew. There will actually be signs on the pews indicating whether or not that pew is for the 9:00 a.m. or 10:15 a.m. service. This way you will not be sitting in a place that was used in the earlier service.

COMING BACK TO CHURCH The Executive Committee adopted a plan to have us come back to Sunday School and worship on an every other week basis beginning Sunday, September 20. Sunday School Classes have been assigned to Week A or Week B. Each week half of the classes will worship first and then enjoy Sunday School, while the other half of the classes begin with Sunday School and then worship. By coming back every other week and using this dual session approach each week, we will be dividing our worship crowd into fourths so that we can practice social distancing. Next Sunday will be a Week A Sunday. Here is the schedule and room assignments: 9:00 a.m. Worship: Coed I, Coed IV, Women’s IV, Men’s III 9:00 a.m. Sunday School: Women’s III (Fellowship Hall) Men’s II (D8) 10:15 a.m. Worship: Women’s III, Men’s II 10:15 a.m. Sunday School: Coed I (Blue Room) Coed IV (Fellowship Hall) Women’s IV (B9) Men’s III (D6) Week B will be on campus the following week on Sunday, September 27. Their schedule and room assignments are: 9:00 a.m. Worship: Men’s I, Women’s I, Women’s II, Juniors and K-3 whose parents are in worship 9:00 a.m. Sunday School: Coed II (Fellowship Hall) Coed III (D6) Youth — Blue Room Juniors and K-3 whose parents are in Sunday School (Usual classrooms) All Nursery and Preschool (Usual Classrooms) 10:15 a.m. Worship: Coed II, Coed III, Youth, Juniors and K-3 whose parents are in worship Volunteer staffed nursery for all Nursery and Preschool 10:15 a.m. Sunday School: Men’s I (Fellowship Hall) Women’s I (D8) Women’s II (B9) Juniors and K-3 whose parents are in Sunday School Members and guests who are not in a Sunday School class are asked to pick ei-ther Week A or Week B and pick either the 9:00 a.m. or 10:15 a.m. time for worship and attend that time every other week. If you want to be at church with persons in your general age range, older adults and college age students are in Week A; younger and middle adults and those with youth and children are in Week B.
