1 NUDGE, Yrjönkatu 30 Nudge is a department store of ecological and ethical choices. Nudge offers clothing for adults and accessories and shoes, gifts and design as well as fresh food and wines.

2 KIASMA SHOP, Mannerheiminaukio 2 Hosted by the Museum of Modern Art, the shop features art items, exhibition publications and various design products, jewellery and accessories. You can also find research and guide books, postcards and other products related to Kiasma’s operations.

3 STOCKMANN, Aleksanterinkatu 52 The Stockmann’s department store in the centre of Helsinki is a famous landmark as well as a culturally and historically valuable building. With a sales area of circa 50,000 square metres, it is the largest department store in the Nordic countries.

4 MARIMEKKO, Aleksanterinkatu 50 Marimekko was born from a desire to create something new, unique, durable and beautiful for Finland. Founded by Armi Ratia in 1951, Marimekko is currently the best known textile and clothing design brand in Finland.

8 IITTALA, Pohjoisesplanadi 23 Iittala is a Finnish company specialized in interior design and tableware. The i-logo of Iittala was designed by Timo Sarpaneva in 1956. Initially the company operated as a glass factory founded in 1881.

9 SAMUJI HOUSE, Erottajankatu 9 B The Samuji clothing collection introduces two separate lines, The Samuji Classic and Samuji Seasonal collections. Samuji’s Koti-Home interior design collection consists of in-house print fabrics, household textiles, mouth-blown glass objects and small decorative items as well as traditional, often locally handcrafted utensils from various countries and cultures.

10 LOKAL, Annankatu 9 Lokal is a concept store and the home of Finnish art, design and handicrafts. Lokal’s timeless product range is focused on craftsmanship and small-scale fabrication.

MUSEUMS & GALLERIES

1 GALERIE ANHAVA, Fredrikinkatu 43 Galerie Anhava’s programme consists of versatile exhibitions of Finnish and Nordic contemporary art. The programme is specifically focused on conceptual art. Founded in 1991, Galerie Anhava is internationally active and annually participates in art fairs outside Finland.

2 GALERIE FORSBLOM, Yrjönkatu 22 Organizing more than twenty exhibitions per year, Galerie Forsblom is known for presenting established artists from outside Finland. The Finnish art field is represented by established as well as young artists. Galerie Forsblom participates in several major art fairs every year. Founded in 1977, the gallery is located in the historically significant Suomi house in the centre of Helsinki.

3 HELSINKI CONTEMPORARY, Bulevardi 10 A top quality international gallery of contemporary art offers cultural experiences in the core of the Helsinki “Gallery District” on Bulevardi. It is located in a Neo-Renaissance building designed by architect Theodor Gransted. Its unique decoration was created by Ilkka Suppanen.

4 DESIGN MUSEUM, Korkeavuorenkatu 23 The Design Museum in Helsinki is a national institute dedicated to Finnish design. It provides unique design experiences and new points of view to multidimensional design in Finland as well as internationally. To celebrate the jubilee year of Finnish independence, Design Museum opens a completely renewed collection of Finnish design history exhibited until year 2020.

5 MUSEUM OF FINNISH ARCHITECTURE, Korkeavuorenkatu 24 The Museum of Finnish Architecture is a specialty museum located in Helsinki. Established in 1956, it is the second oldest museum of architecture in the world. It organizes exhibitions in and outside Finland.

6 ATENEUM, Kaivokatu 2 Ateneum is an art museum in Helsinki, one of the three museums forming the Finnish National Gallery. It is located in the centre of Helsinki on the south side of Rautatientori square close to Helsinki Central railway station. It has the biggest collections of classical art in Finland. The Ateneum building was designed by Theodor Höijer and completed in 1887. The facade of Ateneum is decorated with statues and reliefs which contain a lot of symbols. Above the main entrance, in the second floor, are busts of three famous classical artists: architect Bramante, painter Raphael and sculptor Phidias. Above the busts, in the third floor, four caryatids support the pediment. These symbolize the four classical art forms: sculpture, painting, geometry, and sculpture. The facade culminates in a collage of sculptures in which the Goddess of Art, Pallas Athene, blesses the products of the different art forms. All the statues were by Carl Eneas Sjöstrand.

7 AMOS REX, Mannerheimintie 20 The new art museum opening in August 2018 is also a cultural centre consisting of the old Lasipalatsi including its movie theatre Bio Rex, and exhibition spaces beneath the Lasipalatsi square.

8 KIASMA, Mannerheiminaukio 2 Kiasma is the Helsinki Museum of Modern Art located in the core of the city. Kiasma is part of the Finnish National Gallery. It is dedicated to modern and contemporary art, enforcing its impact by establishing relationships with artists and audiences.

9 NATIONAL MUSEUM, Mannerheimintie 34 The Finnish National Museum presents Finnish life from the middle ages to the 19th century. Unique objects tell about our times during more than 1000 years. In addition, the museum hosts temporary topical exhibitions and an interactive space, Vintti, where you can experience history by making.

10 HAM, Eteläinen Rautatiekatu 8 Helsinki Art Museum (HAM) curates the citizens’ own art collection that consists of more than 9,000 works. Nearly half of the collection brings joy to the people outside the museum in the parks, streets, government offices, health stations, schools and libraries of Helsinki. The exhibitions held at the Tennispalatsi gallery focus on modern and contemporary art.

ARCHITECTURAL TOUR

1 LÖYLY, Hernesaarenranta 4 Löyly is a sauna service complex of 1800 square metres located in the Hernesaari district of Helsinki. Actor Jasper Pääkkönen and politician Antero Vartia ordered its construction, and it was completed in May 2016. Designed by Avanto Architects, the complex is nine metres tall and made of wood.

2 STORA ENSO, Katajanokanlaituri 1 The Stora Enso HQ is an office building located in the Katajanokka district of Helsinki. Alvar Aalto designed the building that was completed in 1962. It is considered one of the most controversial works by Alvar Aalto, and it has been called “the most hated house in Finland”. Its pale facade has been said to stick out among the neighbouring old low-rise red-brick warehouses.

3 MARKET SQUARE BLOCKS AND THE CATHEDRAL, Senaatintori The Market Square Blocks consist of the area between the Senate Square and the Market Square in Helsinki. The blocks have been named after animals: the Elephant, Lion, Rhinoceros and Dromedary. The blocks have been renewed by moving away offices and renovating the space into restaurants and retail stores. Helsinki Cathedral is the main church of the Helsinki parish and bishopric. It was designed by Carl Ludvig Engel and looks white, but actually it has been painted with three different tones of light grey. The Cathedral and its apostle statues are among the best known symbols of Helsinki.

4 KAISA HOUSE, Fabianinkatu 30 Kaisa House is part of the University of Helsinki campus located on the Kaisaniemenkatu street. The university’s main library is located in Kaisa House. Main and architectural design was provided by Anttinen Oiva Arkkitehdit Oy (AOA). Main contractor was SRV Rakennus Oy. It was selected Glass Structure of the Year in 2012 by the Finnish Sheet Glass Association and the Finnish Association of Architects. Furthermore, the Finnish Critics’ Association (SARV) awarded its designers Selina Anttinen and Vesa Oiva in 2012.

5 KULTTUURISAUNA, Hakaniemenranta 17 Kulttuurisauna (“Culture Sauna”) was built in the Merihaka district of Helsinki during 2012 and 2013 and opened to the public in May 2013. It was designed by Nene Tsuboi and Tuomas Toivonen. Its environmentally friendly energy system is exceptional because the building has not been connected to a district heating network at all. It collects its thermal energy efficiently from e.g. flue gases. Culture sauna is one of the Helsinki Design Capital projects from 2012.

6 KAISANIEMI GARDEN, Kaisaniemenranta 2 Also known as the oasis of Kaisaniemi, the botanical garden with its greenhouses offers unique experiences for nature lovers all year round. It has been located in the centre of Helsinki since 1829, providing recreation for several generations. Spanning across circa four hectares, the garden invites us to explore the plant world. In the summer, its most beautiful part may well be the vast middle garden, the pond and the flowering plants bordered by the greenhouses and rose bushes. In the middle of the garden stands a historical stone building once designed to serve as the royal castle. It now functions as the botanical museum of Helsinki.

7 RAILWAY STATION, Kaivokatu 1 Helsinki received railway connections in the 1860s. Designed by architect Eliel Saarinen in the 1900s, the granite main station building is known for its bell tower and the statues of the lantern carriers (Lyhdynkantajat) by sculptor Emil Wikström. It has become a symbol for all railroad operation in Finland.

8 MAKKARATALO, Kaivokatu 8 The commercial building known as Makkaratalo (“Sausage House”) was designed by Viljo Revell and Heikki Castrén and completed in 1967. It is now part of the City-Center complex. According to Revell’s plan, the complex was to be expanded all the way to Aleksanterinkatu, but only the northern part of the plan, the Sausage House, was implemented.

9 FINLANDIA HALL, Mannerheimintie 13 E Finlandia Hall is a conference and event venue located by the Töölönlahti bay in the centre of Helsinki. Alvar Aalto designed the building in 1962, and it was completed in 1971. Finlandia Hall was part of Alvar Aalto’s city centre plan that included a chain of cultural buildings adorning the west shore of Töölönlahti. The other buildings planned by Aalto for the area were never built. The conference wing was designed in 1970 and built between 1973 and 1975. A new gallery and meeting venue was built inside the Hall in the spring of 2011.

10 ROCK CHURCH (TEMPPELIAUKIO), Lutherinkatu 3 Famous Rock Church is the home of the Evangelic-Lutheran parish in Töölö, Helsinki. It was completed in 1969. The rocky area was reserved for a church already in 1906 when the first zoning plan of the district was confirmed. That is why the area is called Temppeliaukio (Temple Square). However, construction did not commence until much later. It was preceded by three architectural competitions, of which only the last produced a first prize winner. The church excavated inside the rock was designed by Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen. Their design preserves the landscape by embedding the church in the rock: the general assembly is in the middle and the parish rooms are on the sides of the hill complying with its natural shape.
