Our Professional Accrediting Body, ACEJMC, will be visiting our College in 2018-19 for our re-accreditation. This accreditation review begins this September with our self-study year. ACEJMC judges units against the objectives that units set for themselves and against nine standards that the Council sets. The two most challenging standards for units are Diversity and Assessment. Standard 1: Mission, Governance and Administration Our college will use the resource section of our website to post our written mission statement, strategic plan, faculty governance policy, and minutes from faculty and committee meetings. Our college will implement the AD14 review policy for all Department Heads. This five-year evaluation will provide assessment of the effectiveness of the leadership in our college. Matt Jackson and Anthony Olorunnisola have volunteered to go under review this year. The Dean’s Advisory Council will design the review process this fall. Standard 3: Diversity and Inclusiveness (Gary Abdullah) This standard has five indicators. Gary’s goal is to have continued cooperation between his office and the rest of the college to meet this standard. His office will be actively involved in recruitment of students, working with our Manager of Recruitment, Emily Clevenger. His office will be actively involved in the updating of our facilities to be ADA compliant and inclusive. He will be working with academic units to update curricula. Gary proposed renaming his office ‘The Office of Diversity and Inclusion’. The Executive Committee unanimously agreed to make this change. Recruiting and Scholarship (Emily Clevenger) Applications and paid accepts are down for our college and the University. However, our college’s yield rate is up, which accounts for the similar class size this year as compared to last year. Paid accept setbacks include the transition to LionPATH and delays in the central financial aid office. The University began a recruitment program two years ago called For the Glory. Our college had a great showing this year of 25 attendees and a 60% yield rate. All of these recruits were offered a $4k Provost Scholarship. The college is offering around 45 $4k recruitment scholarships a year. Our yield declined this year. Our goal is to keep offering to high quality students and to target underrepresented minorities. Emily’s office will continue to improve messaging and event communication this upcoming year. They will focus on targeting students who are already visiting campus. Events will have improved content, impressive presentations and will use student voices to connect with recruits. Emily proposed creating a ‘Bellisario Ambassadors’ program: a prestigious group of students nominated by faculty to participate in events, 1-1 interactions and recruitment communications. Goal-Setting Roundtable

Russ Eshleman, Department Head, Department of Journalism The major goal of the Journalism Department this year will be to begin taking recommendations of a department curriculum committee to tweak courses and overhaul the curriculum where necessary. A goal is to maintain one of our strengths – the teaching of the basic fundamentals of reporting and writing while at the same time updating our courses to reflect the changes in the industry. A few immediate tasks will be to create a new introductory journalism course and streamline the “460 series” of print/digital writing courses. Steve Sampsell, Director of Strategic Communications Continue telling the story of the Bellisario College and its people, with three parts of focus: branding, continuing changeover and better use of Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications; research communication, focusing on faculty achievement and impact; and student communication, creating a weekly email or info piece of deadlines, events and opportunities. Maura Shea, Associate Department Head, Department of Film-Video Film-Video’s goal is to bring in a high-level film professional, ideally someone from an under-represented or minority group, to give a lecture/presentation, a few class visits or possibly do a workshop with students. We will be looking specifically at someone working in narrative production. Shannon Kennan, Director of eLearning Initiatives Get the timeline, details and roll-out plans well-organized for the new online programs we are launching. I will need help from the department heads with planning, adjusting and double-checking details as I proceed. Sandi Rockwell, Director of Administration and Finance Have all faculty report any funding (external or internal sources) through Elaine so that we can improve our post-award processes. We need to improve our communications between the research award, the finance office, HR, Grad Office, IT, etc. to make sure all affected are on the same page. Jamey Perry, Assistant Dean for Academic Services Get a strong grasp of the applications on LionPATH that will assist our office with curriculum management including students and classes in the College. Time and training are two items I need to pursue this goal. Fuyuan Shen, Department Head, Ad/PR 1. We will make some curricular improvements this year. In particular, we will look at how to change the structure and format of COMM 420 Advertising and Public Relations Research. We will explore the possibility of changing the current large lecture/lab session format to small class format. In addition, we will start developing a new class for the PR area. After examining the curriculum of peer institutions, we would like to strengthen our PR curriculum by developing a PR media class that will be required for the major.

2. In addition to the above, we would like to bring professionals and speakers to visit classes and interact with our students. This will be done in connection with the Digital Week and with student organizations. The goal is bring speakers from diverse backgrounds to interact with students and enhance their classroom experience. Elaine Files, Coordinator of Research Administration Continue to work on the relationship between the Corporate and Foundations Relations office at PSU. They are able to create the relationships that are necessary to pursue funding with Foundations and Corporations on our behalf. This will allow us to pursue relationship build relations with these entities and not needlessly make "cold call" in requests for funding. Julie Evak, Coordinator of Undergraduate Education Streamline the student learning assessment process so that the final reports are completed within the academic year. Anthony Olorunnisola, Department Head, Film/Video & Media Studies Goal: Diversify the MS curriculum to enable students to gain exposure to practical courses [in production and/or writing] as a part of the requirements for graduation Strategy / Step 1: Propose plan to FV&MS faculty at the first meeting of the faculty no later than September 1, 2017. Commission a Committee to benchmark and work out modalities Strategy / Step 2: Consult with Department Heads of Advertising/PR, Journalism, and Telecommunications to explore possibilities and impacts. Strategy / Step 3: If there is buy-in across the board, begin the process of seeking faculty senate approval for program review by the end of the fall semester – no later than November 30. Outcome 1: Update curriculum accordingly Outcome 2: Enhance the attractiveness of BA degree in MS for incoming undergrads Outcome 3: Occupy empty seats in pertinent practical courses offered by Departments within the College Outcome 4: Responsibly increase enrolment of FVMS majors

Matt Jackson, Department Head, Telecommunications The Telecommunications department will work to develop stronger course sequences in our defined concentration areas. We aim to develop specific capstone courses for each concentration that will provide students with an opportunity to synthesize and apply the skills they have learned. Where feasible, the capstone courses will include projects with tangible output that students can show to prospective employers. Yu-tai Chung, IT Manager Be an advocate/resource for our faculty and staff. Work with program/department/area heads for IT needs to support their goals and clear the way in terms of technology hurdles. Provide Annual IT spending and requests reports by program/department/area for strategic planning.

• Status-quo for general funds• Won’t see relief on budget pressure from Bellisario gift for 1-2 years, and

that will only result in selective transfer of programming costs

• Hiring: Conservative approach in light of state funding • Science Communication hires: funded by Provost• New AD/PR hires (three): Covered by early retirement give-backs
