What will be studied this term

Students in Year 10 will study the novel Of Mice and Men.Forreading students will:

Show a clear understanding of the text through an analysis of language and how languageis used to create particular effects. They will also evaluate and make interpretations of thetext according to different perspectives and language variation.

Some students will understand the social and historical context of the text. They will usethis to develop in-depth and detailed evaluations of the text and key features of the text.

    Forspeaking and listening:

Students will maintain and develop their talk purposefully in a range of contexts. They willstructure what they say clearly, using well selected vocabulary and appropriate intonationand emphasis. They use Standard English confidently in a range of situations, adapting asnecessary.

Some students will make a range of contributions that show they have listened perceptivelyand are sensitive to the development of discussions.

How will work be assessed During the Autumn term, students will complete a controlled assessment set by the exam

    board in September.

Practice assessment activities and controlled assessments will be marked according to theSchools assessment and feedback policy, the criteria outlined above and GCSE Mark

    schemes.

What needs to be done at home Students are required to read the text fully and carry out research connected to the text to

gain a clear understanding of the social and historical context.

Differentiated additional skills based tasks will be given according to the needs of thegroup.

Revision and practice of writing skills, grammar, punctuation and spelling.

Resources and practice exam questions are available via the facultys website,BeENGspired which can be found through the school website.

What will be studied this term

    Metals and Their Uses

Appreciate that metals are very useful in our everyday lives and used in a wide variety ofsituations.

Know that ores are naturally occurring rocks that provide an economic starting point for themanufacture of metals.

Know that iron ore is used to make iron and steel. Know that copper can be easily extracted but copper-rich ores are becoming scarce so new

methods of extracting copper are being developed to exploit low grade ores - those with lowconcentrations of copper

Know that aluminium and titanium are useful metals but are expensive to produce. Know that metals can be mixed together to make alloys to improve the metal's properties for a

    particular purpose.

Students are expected to be able to use their skills, knowledge and understanding to ...

Consider and evaluate the social, economic and environmental impacts of exploiting metalores, of using metals and of recycling metals.

Know that metal ores are obtained by mining and that this may involve digging up andprocessing large amounts of rock.

Know and understand that obtaining, using and recycling metals is limited to the metalsnamed eg Fe, Cu, Al.

Be able to evaluate the benefits, drawbacks and risks of using metals as structural materials

Know and understand the uses and properties of metals and alloys is limited to thosespecified in the subject content ie Fe, Cu, Al and Ti.
