Exploring Art I & IIAges 4 to 7

In January, it’s time to summon up your favorite MIA superhero. Learn all about extraordinary powers, amazing adventures, and true trials that test and build character. Imagine if you were a superhero: What kinds of heroic feats would you perform? In February, you’ll become a modern-day adventurer, embellishing stories with tall tales of discovery. Unlock the ancient mystery of a buried treasure by decoding the special inscription—a musical adventure you won’t want to miss! In March, you’ll hold a magnifying lens up to the natural world for inspiration while sketching pictures. Drawings of creepy-crawlies can be oh-so beautiful, too! Also, learn how line defines a variety of drawing styles guaranteed to lasso your interest. Classes are held Saturdays in Classroom 111. Sections limited to 14.

Exploring Art Instructors: Julie Delliquanti, Jenea Rewertz-Targui, or Alexandra Neukom.

Students explore the elements of art by visiting the museum galleries and working in the studio. They study line,

color, shape, and composition, with an emphasis on works of art from the permanent collection. Projects in Exploring

Art I and Exploring Art II are the same. The longer sessions of Exploring Art II allow students more time to view art in

the galleries and to work on their own. Class projects are unique to the museum and its collection.

Fashion Studio ClassesAges 8 to 16

Interested in garments and fashion in all their fabulousness? In January, you’ll learn how to sketch various designs inspired by artwork in the galleries. Students create illustrations based on everything from court fashion, a time when costume balls were all the rage in high society, to contemporary fashion photography like Richard Avedon’s Dovima with Elephants, Evening Dress by Dior, Cirque d’Hiver, Paris. Translate your own poetic and personal interpretations into fantastic fashions. You’ll develop basic sketching skills, including drawing the figure, elongation and proportion, light and shading, and rendering fabrics and garments. Saturdays in Classroom 112/113.
