  • Siama's Music from CongoDescription: Congolese guitarman Siama toured the world and recorded hundreds of radio hits from 1971-95.Now based in Minneapolis, he was awarded a McKnight Fellowship in 2014, he received a grant to release a critically-acclaimed album in 2016 and he's using another grant to create a kids' album in 2017.

Siama's music combines elements of traditional Congolese music and sounds from East African dance floors and he adds familiar elements from Delta Blues and even reggae and calypso. He can tailor his program for any age group. It's especially fun for kids so he enlisted Dallas Johnson to make the programs super engaging and interactive. Together, they tell Siama's fun stories about growing up in rural Congo and everyone's encouraged to play African hand percussion and to sing along in Kikongo, Swahili and Lingala. Siama and Dallas hosted several programs for young people in 2016: Children's Hospital's Star Studio, The Ordway Theatre/Flint Hill's Children's Festival, Intermedia Arts' Family Arts Day, MacPhail's Family Day, Global Market's Wee Wednesdays, Open Streets events, numerous festivals and social service programs like Southside Nurturing Center and Banyan Community. They were hosted a summer residency at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts' monthly Family Arts Days and a grant sponsored their songwriting residency with teenagers from Woodland Hills in Duluth.

  • “Asian American and Pacific Islander Communication Style”, Presented by Asian Media Access

Description: Did you ever feel there is a time you just can’t comprehend what other cultural groups mean? There are 2 fundamental communication styles - High context communication transmits a message with only minimal information within the message. This requires the receiver to translate and decipher the transmitted message using context knowledge one assumes the receiver has. Low context transactions are the reverse. Most of the information must be in the transmitted message in order to make up for what is missing in the context.

In some cultures, such as those of Americans and Germans, communication occurs predominantly through explicit statements embedded in the text and verbal conversations, and they are thus categorized as Low-Context cultures. In other cultures, such as the Japanese and Chinese, messages include other communicative cues such as body language, the understanding of unspoken rules, and even silence. Asian cultures are among the “highest context” cultures in the world. Essentially, the High-Context culture - communication style includes context that is not obvious during discussion such as the situation, behavior and para-verbal cues as integral parts of the communicated message.

To guide our students to better understand the cultural complexity, we will use 3-Dmodel exercise, and Funny Asian Commercials to illustrate such abstract concepts, you will have a lot of “Ah-Ha” moments while laughing so hard.
