Provincie Noord-
Brabant challenge
Shared mobility as a service
Context: the days of traditional regional public transport are numbered. Especially in areas with lower travel
demand, provision of public transport is under pressure. This may lead to reduced accessibility, social exclusion
of certain societal groups and less sustainable travel patterns as people become more car dependent. At the
same time, there is an increased interest in shared mobility concepts (both public and private) which have to
potential to mitigate these effects. Furthermore, Mobility as a Service (MaaS) concepts aim to combine the
strengths of these concepts. However, initiatives to this end are still fragmented and there is no cohesive vision
on how these could be integrated in the current public transport system.
Challenge: the concession area of West-Brabant involves medium size cities, smaller towns and less populated
rural areas. The challenge for this area is to come up with a new network approach based on innovative shared
mobility concepts that may, or may not be combined with traditional bus services. How can we ensure the
accessibility to daily activities, how can we link shared services to the current bus system, and what is the role for
bike and car sharing? It’s up to this dream team to define the ideal balance!

Challenge: It is still our train, so let’s run it with a smile!
Context: The single and diesel engine powered railway line called the “Maaslijn” connects the cities of Nijmegen, Venlo and
Roermond. The line also serves the Heijendaal Campus in Nijmegen with 50.00 students 17.500 workers and 5000 visitors each
day. Since 2006 the rail line is “decentralized” (= under authority of the province of Limburg) and operated by regional by public
transport operators. From 2015 the capacity of the trains reached their limits. Since then measures were implemented and plans
for future developments were on the way. Nearly doubling the amount of trains using the track per hour to a full ’15 and 30’
timetable resulted in an increase of daily passengers of >50%. There were concrete plans to transform the line into a two-way
rail track, to electrify the whole rail system and to replace the existing trains by new electrified trains in (2020). However, due to
all kinds of complexities, the changes to the rail track and overhead wires are delayed till December 2024. The faithful travellers
are the victim in this story! The available capacity will be under pressure during rush hour periods and the diesel trains of high
age are becoming more and more unreliable causing regular breakdowns. Arriva, ProRail and the regional partners are working
on operational improvements. But short term and expensive investments (second hand diesel trains, etc..) are not possible.
Challenge: We challenge this dream team to innovate smart and early (information) services around delays and how to manage
excessive crowding in the train, all to ensure happy travellers. We seek exciting as well as practical solutions which breath the
atmosphere of “We have to make the best out of it together, but preferable with a smile”

Challenge – the customer journey for autonomous shuttles
Context: We find ourselves in the middle of a transition to smarter mobility. New technologies and smarter
application of existing technologies drive this transition as well as the promising positive societal and
environmental impact. Governments are longing for more scientific insights on this potential impact while the
automotive industry focuses more on the technological possibilities and limitations. Autonomous shuttles can
function as mean of access to major Public Transport lines, last mile solutions for crowded places like airports or
even as replacement of the “neighbourhood bus”. But what about customer acceptance? Negative news has major
impact in the autonomous discussion for the mainstream public. It looks like it that primarily early-adopters will
dare the leap in the deep and use autonomous vehicles in the early phase! This summer a pilot with an
autonomous Shultte in the port of Drimmelen will be conducted. In this context we have a challenge!
Challenge: We challenge this dream team to create an experience! For that we are not interested in a new app!
We are looking for an experience, a story with atmosphere that guides and seduces the mainstream public in
trusting and using autonomous vehicles.

Challenge – Developing Employers BMI board game
Context: modern cities face the challenge of keeping itself economically accessible, environmental friendly and
socially livable. Key stakeholders are the road authorities for maintaining the accessibility, employers for keeping
the industry going and the employees for creating a healthy city.
To strengthen the dialogue between the government and regional industry Breda University of applied sciences is
developing the Employer BMI: an Accessibility and Mobility management Index for employers. This tool provides
governments and employers with a better insight in the possible solutions. All parties have to look for the most
optimum, doing what is best for themselves and the group!
Logistics Community Brabant (LCB) challenges BUas to create a board game to accelerate this dialogue.
Challenge: Developing a board game requires a team of fresh brains combining content with creativeness with the
aim to trigger appealing compagnies such as Efteling, ASML, Philips en DAF.LCB challenge

Day 1 – Y4PT-nl ideathon @ horizon
• Let’s take on a challenge in an unique atmosphere together! Get yourself connected to people with the same interest in topics or competencies. Design
a creative foundation for s.m.a.r.t. solutions with your team and develop new skills while you push boundaries in this two- day challenge!
• Become most talented participant over the whole length of the ideathon. Get yourself selected by Alessandra Gorini (Co-founder and executive
director Y4PT). You do this by proving your ability to work in a multidisciplenary team (1), by bringing your input and talent to the discussion around
problem solving, the design or communication of the solution (2), but also the factor of positive energy you bring to the event (3)! The selected most
talented participant will be offered the chance to join an international team of young professionals to participate in the 3rd International Y4PT
transport hackathon Stockholm 2019 (5th to 13th of June 2019)! In Stockholm you will also be offered the opportunity to pitch your ideas and increase
your professional network during the UITP Global Public Transport Summit Stockholm 2019 !
• The 1st ,2nd and 3rd best teams of the Y4PT-nl ideathon are selected by representatives of the organizing partners. Although participating and making
meaningful connections is more important than winning, there are fun prizes for the best performing teams!
