yourfootinthedoor was created in 2012 to provide a service to students and those in the creative industry who are looking for a placement or internship in the fashion industry.

At your foot in the door we believe internship experience is invaluable but we know how hard it can be to get an internship let alone getting the most out of the experience so we wanted to provide you with all the tools to make it worthwhile.

The website is a source for you to find internships available, to hear from those in the industry themselves about their experience and tips and a blog to give them the information on the current issues surrounding internships and also tips, advice on how to be good intern and how to make the most out of your experience and also a forum where you can share your own tips, advice and contacts.

We asked Wayne:In the current economical climate how important do you think placements and internships are to an employer?

Apart from our own family, everybody we’ve employed, has 100% come through work placement and internships, we never advertise for staff and we always try to find people by them showing us what they can do. I think its quite a good way in the

creative industry to find someone as you can’t find out much from a CV and you don’t learn everything from an interview.

Your wife Gerardine and yourself started your business very young, prior to this did you ever have to go on a placement?

Whilst at university Gerardine and I started out by emptying our wardrobes onto a small market stall in Camden, as something to do. The stalls were an immediate success and grew to 16 stalls in the space of a year. So we never had to venture out to do a

placement but we went out with our own idea and gained experience from that.

In your opinion what constitutes a potential employee?

Firstly you’ve got to have a talent and a design eye, the next thing is the ability to work as a team and to work really hard. There is no substitute for getting really stuck in, and people who tend to get stuck in tend to learn very quickly. If you’ve got the

attitude where you really want to succeed then you can become a better designer reasonably quickly.

Have you got any tips for getting your foot in the door?

Firstly the best thing is to identify the type of company you want to work for and that you’ve got an affinity with as that shines through as well. Then sometimes it’s quite good to take an aspect of what that company does and show how you would gently

improve it and your view on it and also to pester nicely.

So as a tip to students would you say then that the experience of a placement or an internship is the best route?

Wayne Hemingway and his wife Gerardine are the creative masterminds behind the brand Red or Dead and have been very successful in creating their business Hemingway Designs which

specialises in affordable and social design. We recently caught up with Wayne to find out his views on placements and what tips he could offer us.

I think it’s the best route, however the thing to remember though there are placements that use people and you are basically being there as a dogs body, if that’s the case you’ll find that out in a couple of weeks and your best getting out if you can.

I met with the Director of Fashion Capital and Fashion Enter, Jenny Holloway to discuss the importance of UK Manufacturing, how there is a resurgence for UK trading and the possible jobs you can have in Manufacturing.

I met with Jenny at their Fashion Studio in West London which is based on the campus of University of East London. The site is a hub for creative business activity.

We discussed how over the last few years that the UK has seen a growth in Manufacturing and what this has meant for employment. At Fashion Capital they take on a class of apprenticeships each year. The apprentices get hands on experi-ence at the Studio and also at the offices Factory in making toile and samples for highstreet companies. I was amazed to learn that in the Fashion Studio alone they make up to 2000 garments a week and The Factory, based further north of London will make a further 5000 garments.

Each student that comes into the apprenticeship programme has to choose a route in which they will follow. Fashion Capital have three routes to choose from QC (Quality Control), Pattern Cutting and Sample Making and Jenny informed me that QC is by far the most popular and its the garment conruction and technical production that is growing in importance at the moment with the liked of New Look looking for 4 apprenticeships and ASOS is looking for a further 2 students after taking on two already.

To find out a bit more about the different roles in Fashion production and promo-tion and what it entails check out my Job descriptions at: yourfootinthedoor.tumblr.com

Fashion Capital run an apprenticeship programme for 16-24 year olds and some-times older. You can only apply for the apprenticeship if you have not been to university. To find out more about their apprenticeship programme look at:http://www.fashioncapital.co.uk/Learning/Apprenticeship.html
