Faculty and Staff Capital Campaign enters its eighth year The 2017 Faculty and Staff annual Giving Campaign got underway March 29 with the annual Leadership Reception acknowledging President’s Leadership Scholarship (PLS) donors for their years of philanthropy. The campaign with its theme, #GIVINGISBETTERTOGETHER is in its eighth year of providing scholarships to students through donations from TSU faculty and staff. A total of 87 PLS donors were recognized. “College is not just tuition and fees,” said Student Regent and PLS recipient Tramauni Brock. “It also includes housing, meals, books, supplies and other fees. Receiving the President’s Leadership Scholar- ship allowed me to make up the difference in what I owed and gave me the freedom to serve and maximize my opportunity here at the University. I am an example to the importance of this campaign. If it weren’t for your giving, students like myself would not have the opportunity to flourish, grow and graduate.” The Campaign Steering Committee has set this year’s goal to raise $290,000 with 75% participation. Derrick Wilson is serving as this year’s campaign chair. TSU Debate Team continues winning streak at International Meet Texas Southern University’s acclaimed Debate Team returned to campus after competing in the 27 th annual International Forensics Tournament in Lima, Peru. The team finished in second place after several days of overall competition. TSU garnered three first-place finishes in poetry, prose, and duo-dramatic interpretation; second place in programmed oral interpretation; third place in rhetorical criticism; and a semi- finalist award in impromptu speaking. The team brought home awards in parliamentary debate and other individual events. TSU won a total of 22 awards in eight out of twelve categories, including an award for the Nuance event.     Faculty and Staff Capital Campaign

    enters its eighth year

    The 2017 Faculty and Staff annual Giving

    Campaign got underway March 29 with the annual

    Leadership Reception – acknowledging President’s

    Leadership Scholarship (PLS) donors for their years

    of philanthropy. The campaign – with its theme,

    year of providing scholarships to students through

    Texas Southern University’s acclaimed Debate Team returned to campus after competing in

    TSU and HBU partner to heighten business efficiency

    Texas Southern University

    (TSU) and Houston Baptist

    University (HBU) have combined

    resources to improve business

    intelligence at their respective

    institutions. Representatives from

    both institutions attended the

    Ellucian Live Conference in

    Orlando, Florida to present their

    work, “Banner Process

    Improvements-Value Through

    Collaboration.”

    TSU was represented by Jorge

    Oubre, university Ellucian

    representative, Dr. Raijanel

    Crockem, executive director of

    Institutional Assessment, Planning

    and Effectiveness and Cheymere Robinson, Graduate School admission officer. HBU was

    represented by Linda Perez, Allyson Cates and Sharon Beal.

    The presentation detailed how the two universities are different in enrollment size, student

    demographics, programs offered, and private/public distinction, but have common ground in

    business processes. TSU representatives detailed how the University has provided HBU with best

    practices in the use of Banner document management for human resources processes, client

    management data through Argos, developing dashboards, and overall data analytics. HBU shared

    their use of Banner document management for finance operations, legal contracts and other

    solutions. HBU outlined how to use Argos for custom parking applications and academic advising

    using student profiles. Other innovative and application-based business operations were presented,

    including helping attendees identify and establish professional partners.

    The University honored 3,480 students,

    including those who maintained a 4.0 grade point

    average and were named to the President’s List,

    Dean’s List or Honor Roll. All honorees were

    recognized and awarded a medal for academic

    achievement.

    TSU reserved special praise for 18 students

    who earned 4.0 GPAs in 2016 for the spring and

    fall semesters – Veronica Adams, Ali Bilal,

    Raven Britt, Oliverio Bravo, Kelly Colbert,

    Erika Ferretiz, Samuel Kanu, Rickeena

    Gresham, Farah Khawar, Cierra Griffin,

    Renald Moore, Kierra Patton, Graudencio

    Lucca, Elizabeth Munoz, Tuyen Nguyen, Janie

    Peacock, Theodoro Santos and Franklina

    Tsiboe. Aaron Dallas, a sophomore majoring in

    Marketing, delivered the invocation. Donisha

    Sowell, a junior majoring in Radio, Television

    and Film, introduced Dr. Capers. Keyese Musse,

    a sophomore majoring in music, sang the Alma

    Mater. McKenzie Jones, a freshman majoring in

    Maritime Transportation Management and

    Security, gave the benediction. Students from the

    University Opera Workshop and University Wind

    Ensemble provided musical selections during the

    The team was led by Head Coach Dr. Gloria

    Batiste-Roberts, Head Coach Emeritus Dr.

    Thomas F. Freeman, and assistant coaches

    Sondera Malry, Trendi Nguyen, Wendell King

    II, Tameike Washington, and Shekia Rogers

    (graduate student). David Funchess is the team

    photographer.

    The TSU Debate team is open to all under-

    graduate students, with or without prior training or

    experience. The team meets every Wednesday at

    7:00 p.m. and preparatory workshops are held on

    Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Interested

    students are encouraged to contact coaches in the

    Thomas F. Freeman Center for Forensic

    Excellence located in the Paige Education

    Building, suite 112.

    Graduate School honorees recognized

    at TSU-Alcorn basketball game

    The Graduate School participated

    in College Night at the TSU-Alcorn

    basketball game on March 2 at

    H&PE Arena. The School honored a

    current student, an alumnus, and a

    graduate faculty member. All three

    were recognized at center court prior

    to the game.

    Honorees included Mr. Shawn

    Williams, a master’s candidate in

    Environmental Toxicology in the

    College of Science Engineering and

    Technology. Williams (TSU ’00) is

    an officer for several campus

    organizations, including Graduate

    Student Government Association

    (GSGA), and is employed by

    Chevron Phillips Chemical

    Company.

    Dr. Yvonne Davis Frear is the Graduate School’s alumni honoree. She is a History professor

    and Social Sciences department chair at TSU. Dr. Frear is the Liberal Arts and Sciences liaison at

    San Jacinto College Central in Pasadena, Texas. She graduated with a M.A. in History from Texas

    Southern University in 1995. She is a noted scholar on African Americans in Texas, serves on the

    board of the East Texas Historical Association, and is first vice president of the Central Texas

    Historical Association.

    Dr. Rochelle Parks-Yancy, professor of Management at the Jesse H. Jones School of Business,

    is the graduate faculty honoree and serves as the faculty advisor for the JHJ Graduate Student

    Association. Dr. Parks-Yancy is a prolific researcher and was awarded a Fulbright Scholar Grant to

    Armenia. She has been a recipient of the Faculty Research Award from JHJ and is known for her

    business expertise in managerial training, recruitment and hiring practices, salary negotiation

    strategies and performance evaluation management.
