FAITH IN THE FUTUREHelping people and being kind to others are great reasons

to live, but there are always those who are opposed to that. While some will always work hard to build a better future, some will seek to destroy and harm. Small and large businessowners affected by the recent riots will read this andunderstand.Out titles aim to unite communities through positive news

and helpful editorial. We have been attacked, even mockedin some quarters, because of our open affiliation and desire towork with community faith leaders and church groups. We have never advocated one religion in preference to any

other, for that is a very personal choice, we simply believe, wholeheartedly, that these organisations offer the tools andreal ability to unite broken communities in ways that otherorganisations cannot.Politically, economically and spiritually, our media group

wants to support these builders of the future. We want to bea part of the healing process, reporting the local news in yourarea. It is what positive media is all about. It is how regionalpublishing can serve you best, and your involvement is vital tomaking this process work.Your Town Your Choice really can be all about breathing

Report by Mark Etinger

SINCE the Great Recession thevalue of precious metals hasskyrocketed. Gold especially hasreached new peaks, even wheninflation is factored in. Thereasons for this are many, but oneof the primary ones is gold's rarity- there's only so much gold in theworld.

If all the gold mined in the historyof the earth were distributedequally to all of its residents, everyone would only receive 20grams, less than an ounce. Moreover, since the government

continues to print dollars anddrive inflation higher, it costsmore dollars to buy the sameamount of gold. In this way, goldis much like a stock - it is a saferway to store your money than tokeep it sitting in the bank, eroding through inflation.

Gold is so safe to invest in that it isregularly bought in times ofcurrency failure, burgeoningnational debt, and marketdeclines, as well as during periodsof social unrest.

At present

the prices of gold and silver are atsome of their highest ever. Thelast time gold prices were so highwas in the early 1980s at the closeof the stagflation era. Interestrates are generally related to theprice of gold.

When interest rates rise, the goldprice typically falls. Inversely, when interest rates dip, as theyhave done of late, gold will rise inprice. As a result it is possible totrack the price of gold via the

monetary policy of centralbanks.

Much of the world's gold goes tojewellery. If you have old jewellerythat you don't wear anymore, youmay find yourself with a windfall.Gathering up your own gold canbe valuable, but you can also hosta gold party by inviting yourfriends to sell their gold at yourhome. Certain companies willoffer you a cash percentage of thegold you're able to pool by telling

your friends and hosting a goldparty.

As China seeks to diversify andbroaden its holdings of preciousmetals, you can expect gold andsilver to rise even higher over thecourse of this year. Moreover, theweakening dollar augurs a similarbump in precious metals prices. And Ben Bernanke's muted

interest rates amid economicrecovery point yet another fingerat a climbing gold value. So if youwant to invest in gold and silver, now may be the right time. And ifyou want to sell your gold byhosting a gold party, it's time tostart planning. You don't want towait too long only to watch thebubble burst.

If you are hoping to trade in yourold metals for a nice amount ofcash or in the market for somenew jewellery to adorn your neck, you want to know what youshould be looking to pay. It seemspretty random to an outsider andoften customers feel takenadvantage of by the store ownersbecause they have no idea whatkind of prices to expect. If you aresearching for a gold price, youneed to know how theydetermine what to charge.

Although every store will set itsown costs and determine howmuch profit they make on eachitem, it is usually within a certainrange. That means that theirnecklaces and bracelets willusually reflect the general cost ofthe metal on the market, plushave the additional fees for thework they have done and anystones that were added.

Value

The price of gold actually has amuch bigger effect than simplywhat you will get if you hand inyour grandmother's old watch. Itactually reflects the current stateof the country's economy becausethis precious metal is somethingthat never loses its inherent value.

If you follow the stock market orsimply the market for this oneitem, you will be able to get anidea of how well that economy isdoing relative to the prices forgold. The currency that they usewill be compared to the price ofone billion and this will give youan idea of whether they are onthe upswing or not.

Knowledge

Of course, if all you are interestedin is buying another piece ofjewellery, then it is helpful to

know the current cost ofthis precious metal.Although it will alwaysstay within a certain rangebecause of its inherentvalue, there are definitelytimes when it is cheaper ormore expensive than othertimes.

When looking for an auspicioustime to pawn off your old items, always choose a time when theprice is at its highest. The style andfashion of your old things don'tmatter, so don't be nervous thatthey are not cool anymore, because jewellers are simplytaking them and melting them sothey can create something new.

If you want the best gold price, you should look for a time whenthe market is doing well becauseas soon as the economy goesdown, the cost of this metal goesup. People like to buy somethingreliable and stable so they willturn to gold when the rest of themarket looks poor.

Bartercard gives theWeekly Sport a flying start.

Weekly Sport is now owned andpublished in the UK and Eire byIndependent News Ltd. and hasrecently won a significant advertisingrevenue agreement through theirmedia company's longtermmembership of Bartercard.

Bartercard is a trading exchangethat allows businesses to link up witheach other and swap services andgoods in exchange for trade pounds. These can then be used to save cash.

"This is just what an exciting titlelike the Weekly Sport needs," saysBartercard's regional rep Scott Clancy."The direct injection of ourmainstream advertisers will kick startthis sporty title straight into the gamerunning..."

During a recession, with advertisinghard to secure, Bartercard may just bethe winning formula that gives theWeekly Sport a competitive edge.

The title was launched by a team ofjournalists keen to create a tabloidsuitable for all the family.

As such, the Weekly Sport aims toprovide genuine sports news coveragethroughout the Olympic year and tooffer our readers intelligent editorialcommentary on current news.

"We aim to bring positive andbeneficial news to all our readers andprofits to our all advertisers," sayspublisher Duncan Williams. "Alreadywe have thousands of readers signedup to our digital Weekly Sportbulletins which are accessedduring live matches andcontain valid sportingcommentary from some ofthe very best journalistsworking in the UK."

Advertisers certainly doseem reassured by the stats.

Reading your news on an iPhone oriPad is certainly nothing new, butousting porn advertising in favour ofattracting leading brand advertisers, keen to be associated with a title thatis paving the way for digitaljournalism, is a revolutionary movefor the tabloid media.

"From a moral perspective too,"insists Duncan Williams. "The moveaway from negative press, lies andsoft selling pornography, is bothethical and a very wise evolutionarymove forward following a wave ofpublic scandal within the industry."

"Frankly, the red top must eitherevolve or die. And by this I mean bothtechnically and content wise. I believeI have the team and resources to dothis."

Williams is certainly no stranger toa challenge and boasts a 20 yearcareer in the newspaper industry. Hispassion for media is evidenced during

the many detailed lectures hehas given on the subject

of British media.

He certainly won nofriends within theAmerican basedRupert Murdoch

camp when he wasone of the first to

assert that British mediaought to be owned by the

British. He has been vocal in objectingto News Corp's stranglehold on theBritish media industry for decades andwas vehemently opposed to JamesMurdoch's bid for BSkyB.

Only a growing readership andadvertising will finally tell if theWeekly Sport will gain a foothold inthe cut and thrust world of thetabloid. Bartercard will certainly help.

And those subscription figuresalready seem very favourable.

It is hoped that this will continue toexpand as a long term positive mediaproject, and help to restore the lostintegrity of the red top and its centralpart in our popular British culture.

Bartercard backsa new look

'Weekly Sport'tabloid!

Creating a proper sports focused red top, providing real sports news rather than soft

porn or that familiar 'loony tune' editorial, the Weekly Sport has attracted some

leading UK advertisers through its membership of Bartercard.

If you're an executive planningyour next career move, it mightintrigue you to learn that you'll

be judged by more than just yourresume during your job search.

In other words, a full resume isnot necessarily the best fit for eachinterviewer or contact.

Surprised? You'll find thatrecruiters, company owners, Boardsof Directors, and other hiringdecision-makers often look at yourexperience through a series ofinterviews and investigations -which means that your executiveresume is just one part of theprocess.

Not only should you considerwhich audience is looking at yourportfolio, but also the stepsrequired (initial screening, in-depthinterviews, panel reviews, Boardinterviews) in the hiring process, before assuming that your resumeis the best fit for each situation.

Executive

job

hunting?...

TheDailyWorker-ReportbyLauraSmith-Proulx

Here are 4 must-have documents for an executive portfolio designed to capture attentionat all the right levels - along with recommendations for the timing of each component:

A short, narrative-form document, theBiography often appeals to readers thatare not engaged in the technical detailof a full resume. In addition to being shorter than a

full resume, the bio can also be infusedwith more personality, and cantherefore give the reader a different

perspective on your leadership traits, beliefs, and principles. The best readers for an Executive

Biography are usually networkingcontacts or Boards of Directors. Thismeans that the bio will be most usefuleither early in your job search, or in thelater stages of your executiveinterviews. As an example, you'll probably

encounter networking contacts whomay be messengers, rather than hiring

decision-makers. This group is easilyoverwhelmed by a full resume, and canbe much more receptive to the single-page Executive Biography.Later, after you've passed initial

stages of your executive interviews, your full resume will have been alreadyexamined by hiring authorities. This isthe perfect time to bring your ExecutiveBiography as a leave-behind documentfor an interview with the Board.

1 - Executive Biography

YOURTOWNYOURCHOICE

Page 11: Your Town Your Choice : Issue 36

While not technically a"document" created just for jobhunting, your LinkedIn Profile isa critical - and oftenunderutilised - piece of anexecutive portfolio.

Most executives set up aProfile very quickly and thenabandon it, becomingpreoccupied with their work. Inexecutive job hunting, however, this is a costly mistake!

Your LinkedIn Profile mayvery well be the first piece ofinformation encountered by a

corporate recruiter orindependent headhunter. Therefore, it must be polished, professional, and keyword-heavy (the latter of which aidsothers in finding you throughLinkedIn's internal searchengine).

While your full resume canbe attached within LinkedIn, it'sbest to have populated each ofthe site's main sections(Headline, Summary, Special-ities, Experience, Education)with sufficient information toconvey your executive brandand trigger a recruiter'sinterest.

...You'll need morethan a resume

Despite the myth that hiringauthorities rarely read coverletters, some audiences(company owners, CEOs, andPresidents) might not evenglance at your resume untilthey've fully digested thecontents of your letter.

These groups are usuallyprobing for specific leadership

and communications abilitiesthat they feel are more evidentwithin the letter. Investors, inparticular, like to read a veryshort, bottom-line valueproposition letter, in lieu of aresume.

In short, don't write off acover letter as an importantdocument in the hiringprocess, as you might find thatit was this part of your portfoliothat influenced an interviewingdecision.

Not a month goes by when asocial media or recruiting expertposes the question, "Is theresume dead?"

Not to worry - the need for aresume won't go away soon. You'll absolutely be asked tosend your resume to manycontacts at different stages ofyour search.

Of course, since yourexecutive resume is technicallythe centrepiece of yourpresentation, it must thereforeconvince employers of yourbrand, value proposition, and

leadership standing - no smallfeat!

To create such a powerfuldocument, you'll need to get upto speed on resume trends.Formats and presentation styleshave changed considerably: afull executive resume shouldencapsulate your strategiccontributions, along withmetrics, testimonials, successstories, and leadershipcompetencies, all inside amasterpiece.

Often, the best readers of afull resume will those thatthrive on analytical detail (suchas operations or technologyexecutives that hire EVP andDirector-level candidates).

In summary, an executive portfolio is amust for serious job hunters ready to assume aleadership role. The days of distributing an executiveresume without backup in the form of a ExecutiveBiography, LinkedIn Profile, or Cover letter are gone!

Your job search will be smoother, faster, and moreeffective with a well-rounded, branded portfolio thatappeals to the diverse audiences you'll encounter.

• Pay attention, listen and wait until theperson is finished.

• Indicate you received and understoodthe message. "Okay," "Thanks,""Good," "All right," "I got that,""Makes sense," "Sure thing," "Fine"and so on.

Nine Acknowledgment Facts

1. Some people do not like to talk. Why?Perhaps at some point, they tried toexpress themselves and were repeatedlyignored. They have given up the ideathat anyone listens to them.

2. Other people talk too much. Why?They believe no one hears them. Theyare still trying to get through. They thinkthat if they talk long enough, someonewill listen. If someone wouldacknowledge them, they could relax.

3. When employers give their staffmembers a good acknowledgment forcompleting their work, the staffmembers feel proud and satisfied.

"Boss, I finished that project ahead ofschedule and under budget!"

"Good!"

If the boss does not acknowledge theproject completion, the employee willeither repeat the statement or give upand lose interest in taking on futureprojects.

4. Employees who are notacknowledged will demand more paybecause pay is a form ofacknowledgment.

5. Your bosses (and parents) need to beacknowledged as well.

"Could you clean up this area before youleave?"

Silence.

"I said, clean up this area before youleave."

Blank face.

"DIDN'T YOU HEAR ME? I SAID CLEANUP THE AREA BEFORE YOU LEAVE! GOTIT?"

If you always acknowledge your boss, he

or she feels satisfied and can then moveon to other duties.

6. Acknowledgments help keep yourrelationships going. If you forget tothank people for their gifts, youeventually get no gifts. If you neverreturn telephone calls, your phone goessilent.

Acknowledging e-mail communication isalso important. Because of spam filters, there is always a question if emails mightbe blocked. You improve yourrelationships when you acknowledgeyour e-mail: "Thanks for the note."

8. Children who are not acknowledgedget upset and demand more attention."Mommy? Watch this! Mommy? Watchme! Mommy? Look at me! Mommy?Mommy?" Parents who acknowledgetheir children have calmer, moreconfident children.

9. If you feel the urge to repeat yourself, speak louder or get angry, check ifsomeone has failed to acknowledge you.Just realizing that the other person hasbeen thoughtless can make you feelbetter so you can move on.

After someone tells you something, what should you do next?

“Acknowledgment: Something said ordone to inform another that hisstatement or action has been noted, understood and received. 'Very good,''Okay,' and other such phrases areintended to inform another who hasspoken or acted that his statement oraction has been accepted.”

“Acknowledgment itself does not

necessarily imply an approval ordisapproval or any other thing beyondthe knowledge that an action orstatement has been observed and isreceived.” -- L. Ron Hubbard

For example, if I ask you for the time andyou reply, “It's nine o'clock,” how wouldyou know I received your answer if Ididn't give you an acknowledgment? You might feel a little confused andwonder why I didn't say anything. For example, I ask, “What time is it?”

You reply, “It's nine o'clock.”

I then ignore you.

How would you know I received youranswer if I didn't give you anacknowledgment? You might feel a littleconfused and wonder why I didn't sayanything.

If I then say, “thanks,” you know I heardyou and you can move on.

How to Give a Good Acknowledgment

If you are not sure an acknowledg-ment is important, listen to someonetalk to you and then say nothing.Remain silent. Don't even nod yourhead. Notice how they react.

Then give the person some relief

and say, "Oh, sorry. Yes, I heard you."If you do not acknowledge people,

you will not be successful. If you doacknowledge people, they willappreciate and support you.

Give it a try!

CREDIBLE:GADDAFI WASN’T

The opinions and ideas expressed in this articlown and are not necessarily shared by any16 www.ytyc.co.uk

Page 17: Your Town Your Choice : Issue 36

But as a reputation management professional, I have tosay that he is/was a wily old fox. As a great believer inethical PR, I believe the truth will out and that spin lasts onlyjust so long. Gaddafi will not be remembered in a kind lightby the world. But, gosh, he lasted for forty years.

Now it’s time for the rebels to organise properly, getsome gravitas and play Gaddafi somewhat at his own game. When you want to establish your reputation on firm ground:

Expose your opponent’s lies

A dumb thing the rebels did – they lied that they haddetained Gaddafi’s son Saif Al Islam (or some of them did).World leaders do not like being made to look like fools.Enter Saif, with beautiful, expensive teeth, doing a brilliantjob of smiling with his loyal troops. Here I am, he said. I’mfine. They lied.

Now the rebels need to expose Gaddafi’s lies. Of course, the world knows many of them. But they need tosystematically attack the regime of lies whilst rigorously fact-checking everything they put out. And, if they know what’sgood for them, they’ll start with the Megrahi lie – massmurderer Megrahi is not ill – he’s alive and well and prison-ready. I suggest they send him back to Scotland.

Have a figure-head, or figure heads

I advise business leaders all the time. In a company thatis not getting its fair share of media coverage, inevitablythere are leaders who want to hide behind “the company”.“I don’t want a personal profile”, they say, “I just want thecompany to have a profile”. I’ve got news for you. Peopledon’t relate to entities, they relate to people. Everyorganization needs a human face or, even better, humanfaces.

We know who Saif is, and we know his father. But whoare the new leaders? An amorphous mass of angry menwon’t do the trick. The rebels needs to appoint some knownleaders.

Pictures of Gadaffi when he first mounted his successfulcoup show that he had film-star good looks. If you don’tbelieve me look at this picture of him and Warren Beatty. Iguarantee you’ve never seen them in the same room at thesame time (!) Sad but true: appearance matters. Gaddafiknew that. First, he exploited his good looks. Then, whenhe lost them (to madness I would suggest) he developed adistinctive, recognisable style. He was, for years, to many, the “charismatic” leader. A large number of his ownpeople turned a blind eye to the increasingly obviousfact that he was bonkers. The rebels need credibleleaders.

State a plan

Gaddafi wasn’t short of plans, however loony theywere.

The rebels need to come up with a plan for Libya –quick. They have, apparently already outlined a draftconstitution, which declares a commitment to pressfreedom. But it needs to go further than that.

Make powerful friends

The West, to its eternal shame, did the same in the periodof rapprochement with Libya. Tony Blair hugged the b…..d,for Chrissakes.

The rebels, once they have won, need to align themselvesfirmly with those who can help them stabilize the country.

Rebels, find some believable front men, always tell thetruth, and make some friends. Otherwise you’re lost.

Create stability

Gaddafi was nuts, therefore inconsistent. But he was aconstant.

Now, a traumatised population needs true stability assoon as they can get it. Of course this won’t happenovernight. But internally and externally, the message needsto be that those in charge are serious about moving tostability and a freer Libya.

As I write, William Hague is declaring that “these are stilldifficult and dangerous times” for Libya.

Ain’t that the truth…

Ferguson won’tmanage the

Britishfootball teamat next year’s

Olympics...

WATCHING England stumble to a 1-0 victory overWales at Wembley the other night got me thinkingabout the prospects of Team GB at next year’s Olympicsin London. The Welsh and the English, along with theScots and Northern Irish, have been invited to take partin a unified UK team – although only the English arekeen to do so. The other three home nations are againstthe idea, fearing it could lead to them ultimately losingtheir right to take part as separate, individual countriesin FIFA competitions in years to come.

I can understand those fears given the lunacy of theFIFA power brokers, headed by the king of the asylum,Sepp Blatter. But I can also understand the feelings ofyoung players within the Welsh, Scottish and NorthernIrish teams who would give anything to play for TeamGB on such a stage. In particular, I am thinking of GarethBale and Aaron Ramsey of Wales, who both caused somany problems for Fabio Capello’s England at Wembley.

I am also convinced that those young men will be ableto achieve their dream, despite the misgivings of theirnation’s FA bosses. International law and freedom ofmovement and trade make it inevitable that they will beable to take part, if they so desire. And they do desire, and understandably so. Wales have not qualified for amajor international tournament since the 1958 WorldCup – and similar failings by Scotland and NorthernIreland explain why their players would also probablyjump at the chance of appearing in a majorinternational finals (such as the Olympics) given thechance.

... so, givethe job toDavidBeckham

Why Sir Alex

The only real problem I can envisage is when the managerof Team GB chooses the majority of his players fromEngland… with a couple from Wales, one from Scotland andnone from Northern Ireland! That, more than any quibblingover whether their players should have refused to take part,is likely to cause the biggest headlines in the papers. Nodoubt there will be accusations of favouritism anddiscrimination against the manager.

Which, rather conveniently, brings us to the subject of justwho that manager should be. The smart money is on StuartPearce, the man in charge of England’s Under 21s, being thechosen one… basically because he has been in charge ofEngland’s Under 21s and he is, well, available for the role.Indeed he has canvassed heartily for it.

But is he any good? Put simply… no, he is not goodenough, not up to the job and shouldn’t even be boss ofEngland’s Under 21s if truth be told. Remember when KevinKeegan was the manager of England from 1999-2000? Allpumped up passion, hand on heart, but no tactical nous.Well, Pearce is the modern version but has even less tacticalknow-how judging by his results with the recent golden boysof the Under 21s and when he managed Manchester City

(disastrously). Flip charts do notmake you a tactical genius, neitherdoes looking all grim and serious(and trying to look superintelligent). No, the obvious candidate forthe job is Manchester Unitedboss Sir Alex Ferguson. But hedoes not want the job. Why?Well, would you want tochoose a Team GB squad thatcontained only one name

from your Scottish homeland? (Darren Fletcher). No, youwould feel embarrassed and maybe that you had betrayedyour country. Fergie is no fool; why would he want tomanage England (which is what Team GB will essentially beunless the authorities further decide there must be an evenquota of players from each of the four home nations). He isas proud a Scotsman as they come and his only interest isManchester United and Scotland… in fact, he loves to knockthe English national side and, like all Scots, is happiest whenthey get a good hiding. No, Fergie is not the man for thisparticular mission (impossible).

So, who should manage the team, then? Well, let’sassume that Argentina, Brazil or Portugal dominate (like theyusually do), the best England (sorry Team GB) can hope for isto reach the quarter finals (like they usually did until Capellobecame boss).

So why not give it to someone who will at least make ourpresence off the field bigger and better than the rest, even ifwe aren’t as good on the field?

Someone who will grab us the limelight by virtue of himbeing the most famous footballing face in the world and, indeed, one of the most famous people in the world.

Yes, step forward… David Beckham! OK, he’s no Sir Alex, but he’ll give us some much needed aura, he’s a better betthan Stuart Pearce (who is prickly and dull as well as not upto the job) and he knows all the England (sorry Team GB)players better than anyone… he should do, he was part ofthe team up to last year’s World Cup.

And what of the likely Team GB line-up for the Olympics?Eight Englishmen, two Welshman (Bale and Ramsey), oneScot (Darren Fletcher) and no Northern Irishmen.
