SOCIAL SECURITY UPDATES
Did you Know?...The ABSSB is the first statutory organisation in the
OECS to become a DCash merchant.
On January 1, 1981 self-employed persons were able to make voluntary contributions to Social
Security. However, in 2013 the Government of the day thought it prudent to bring self-employed
payments under the same umbrella as those of employees and employers making these payments
mandatory.
Self-employed persons should remember that registering with Social Security can assist you during
periods when you are unable to work due to loss of income. The rate of contribution for self-
employed persons is 10% of declared income up to a maximum of $6,500.
In the present economic environment where persons lost their jobs due to the pandemic, new forms
of employment emerged creating an increase in self-employed individuals.
Self-employed persons are independent contractors who render services on their own account. In
other words, they are individuals who work for themselves. Categories of self-employment include,
but are not limited to: doctors, lawyers, accountants, consultants, contractors, farmers, taxi drivers,
vendors, fishermen, barbers, hairdressers, web designers, graphic designers, mechanics and
landscapers.
All benefits offered by Social Security are payable to self-employed persons.
