Retirement can change things.

Considerations For Today

For example, what happens when your job is no longer part of your life? For some, leaving co-worker friendships can leave a big hole behind. Another consideration… how much more time you’ll be at home with your partner. Thinking through how your relationship can evolve during your next chapter can help you prepare for your retirement reality.

Time Interrupted With one or both of you working,

time together is limited by working hours.

Busy All the Time Your job can cut into your time to see your children

and grandchildren.

Hanging Out with Friends How many of your friends are

co-workers? For many, co-workers are a big part of their social lives.

Considerations in Retirement

More Time, More Freedom Your time to see your kids and loved ones will free up. You might plan to

move closer to see them.

Disappearing Act Your work relationships can

lessen or vanish entirely if you aren’t seeing friends.

Time to Spare When both partners retire,

you’ll be spending a lot more time together — which can be

an adjustment.

Ways to Ease Into A New Retirement Reality

Enjoy Your New Time Seeing your more of your

kids is great, but remember — they have busy lives, too.

Respect boundaries while increasing contact with adult

children and grandchildren.

Invest in Friendship Take an active role in keeping

up with your old friends. While you’re at it,

consider making new ones, too by joining a group or club,

volunteering, working part-time or checking out internet

options like Meet-up.

Take It Slow You might want to stagger retirement to see what’s it

like first. Be patient with each other. Pursue new interests,

both together and separately. Allow yourself some alone

time while you rediscover your relationship.
