What is a Degree Apprenticeship?

Discover a new route into higher education. A Degree Apprenticeship could give you a head start, allowing you to combine university study with practical skills gained in the workplace and the security of a regular salary. As a Degree Apprentice you will split your time between university study (one day a week) and the workplace (4 days a week), this means your studies will relate directly to real-life business challenges that you’ll face in the office.

GET A DEGREE THAT WORKS

Benefits of a Degree Apprenticeship:

You’ll receive an annual salary paid by your employer

Your tuition fees will be paid in full and you will graduate with no student debt

Gain up to three years of invaluable work experience and leave university career ready

Graduate with a BA (Hons) Business Management degree validated by the University of Kent

Our degrees are co-designed by leading companies ensuring you gain the skills that employers are looking for

You’ll be taught by industry professionals - our tutors don’t just teach business, they live and breathe it, as they’ve all had successful careers in the industry

What will you study?

The degree will span 2-4 years (length dependent on employer) and your modules are designed to be flexible and to enable you to incorporate your learning in the workplace, with your academic learning in the classroom. The Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship (CMDA) includes special modules which have been designed to allow you to achieve academic credit through work-based consultancy and research projects. These self-managed learning modules allow even greater autonomy, applying your skills and knowledge to a specialist area related to your work.

By your final year you will have developed a thorough understanding of the principles of business and will have had lots of exposure to real organisations, industry case studies and working practitioners. Your final year is focused on bringing everything you have learned together to develop your strategic view of business.

You will graduate with a BA (Hons) in Business Management and gain the Chartered Management Institute’s (CMI) Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership.

L’Oréal Degree Apprenticeship Case Study

We caught up with L’Oréal Degree Apprentice Daniel Cook to give you an insight into his motivations for choosing a Degree Apprenticeship, offer tips for applying and describe his experience working at L’Oréal so far.

Why did you choose a Degree Apprenticeship

I chose a Degree Apprenticeship because of the professional experience it provides alongside your studies. It gives you your first step into the professional world that you might not get otherwise, and definitely gives you an advantage when looking for a job in the future.

What have you found most rewarding?

The experience I’m gaining academically and professionally is giving me the experience that businesses look for, and to have gained this experience at such a young age.

Tell us about a typical day at L’Oréal?

Every day is different! It’s fast paced and always changing. I’ve been given a lot of responsibility that I wouldn’t have been given had I not been on a Degree Apprenticeship. I’ve been given the opportunity to run projects, which was unexpected. What would you say to others who are considering a Degree Apprenticeship?

Do it! It’s probably the best decision I’ve ever made. It is something that challenges me, and no day is boring or slow.

“A DEGREE APPRENTICESHIP GIVES YOU YOUR FIRST STEP INTO THE PROFESSIONAL WORLD THAT YOU MIGHT NOT GET OTHERWISE AND DEFINITELY GIVES YOU AN ADVANTAGE WHEN LOOKING FOR A JOB IN THE FUTURE.”

BBC Degree Apprenticeship Success Story

We had a chat with Charmaine Brome who has recently graduated and finished her Degree Apprenticeship programme with the BBC.

What was your favourite part of studying at Pearson College London?

Pearson College London was always looking for ways to expose its students to the business world and the events were great opportunities for networking and applying what was taught in the classroom.

The College was always looking at ways to improve and was always asking for feedback.

Where have you gone on to work and what will your role be?

I have stayed on at the BBC and I am working as a Business Coordinator with the Corporate Real Estate Projects. I provide business support for a corporate real estate project within the BBC. I am a central coordination point for my team so I manage the monthly report and just make sure all the Project Managers have the support they need.

How has this opportunity helped you get into the world of business?

The Degree Apprenticeship scheme allowed me to work and study at the same time so I was thrown directly into the world of business at the BBC. I worked in three different placements which exposed me to a lot of what happens in the background to keep the BBC ticking. Essentially, I had the best of both worlds as they paid for me to earn my degree while I worked. Pearson College London also nurtured an entrepreneurial spirit and created so many opportunities to get involved in industry days - I attended a few and the exposure was invaluable.

“PEARSON COLLEGE LONDON NURTURED AN ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT IN THE STUDENTS AND IT WAS UP TO ALL STUDENTS TO TAKE AS MUCH AS THEY COULD! I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO PUTTING THOSE SKILLS TO USE IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS.”

Some of the employer partners we have worked with in the past include small SME’s such as GetGeared to corporate giants Unilever, Moët Hennessy and IBM. We have a wide variety of roles that become available throughout the year, which means there is a scheme to suit everyone.

How do I know if a Degree Apprenticeship is right for me?

It’s difficult to be sure you’re making the right decision when choosing whether and how to continue your education, why not take our online quiz for fun, to see if you are suited to a Degree Apprenticeship at: pearsonbusinessschool.ac.uk/daquiz

How much time will I spend at work and at university?

Your time will be split 80% of the working week with your employer and 20% studying at the College, this usually translates to working at your respective employer Monday to Thursday and then attending Pearson Business School on Friday for lectures and seminars.

Will I be matched with an employer or do I have to find my own work?

You will apply to a scheme that will be advertised on the Pearson College London website. We advertise our schemes with specific companies so you’ll know exactly what company you’ll be applying to and what the role entails.
