The System Behind Finding Your Musical Direction & Claiming Your Unique Space

RESEARCH:STUDY, LEARN, DIG THE WELL, LOOK FOR AND FIND YOUR MUSE, YOUR REASON.

Write lyrics and find concepts that make you feel deeply, not lightly. You are looking

for subjects and messages that resonate deeply with you, your core – words that you

have to dig to write. And if you are an instrumentalist then what moves you to play has

to be something other-worldly. Subjects that bring you to your knees. People respond to

emotion – what they can feel inside themselves. We are all looking to feel more deeply

so we can release something inside that is trapped – or find joy. You have to give that

to have an exceptional record. And to give it you have to go there. Nothing less.

Write a sketch of a song every day. You want to flex your songwriting muscles and

there is no better way than writing every day. Instead of “morning pages” write

“morning song sketches.”

STEPS 1-7:If you are in the process of choosing songs for your record then replace “write a song”

with “choose a song” from your catalog.

After doing this worksheet (or during), don’t be afraid to change song selections for

your record or go back and tweak lyrics to make your songs better. You may end up

writing new ones that could be the front-runners of your next record, Don’t put your

record out until you have songs that show your signature.

TELL A STORY. Signature songs tell a story of the artist in such a way that it introduces “who they

are” to the public. They are “branding” tools. To help you find the qualities of your

personality that might be interesting to others, we examine pivotal moments in their

life that built character. Write your top 3 pivotal moments below. Then write a song

about those moments in a way that reveals what you learned.

LYRIC TWISTS + TURNS Have as many of these in your song as you can muster!

l The first 4 lines should reveal the song without giving away the hook/chorus.

l Keep attention with surprise lyrics (a phrase leads you to think a common word is

coming and then you surprise them).

l Use internal rhymes (within a phrase).

l Replace common words with clever words (avoid overused words like love, pain,

night, light etc.) Try using a Synonym Finder.

MASTERFUL MELODIES + MUSIC

l Each section should have it’s own arc (a rise in melody), with a bigger arc

through the whole song.

l Work Your Melody, Don’t only move your melody along with the chords, look for

notes outside of the chords.

l Match melodies in sections.

l Pay attention to the groove you use (make it feel good.)

l Make the tempo serve the song! Contrast works sometimes!

l Change chords at the top of each section. Try relative minors (see wheel

diagram on slides) to use a “similar” chord but with a darker feel.

VISION.

The vision and clarity of the song is intact - it’s clear what it’s about (for the writer first).

¨¨ Are you clear on what you want your record to sound like?

Have you chosen a lane in your genre for your record?

¨¨ Did you listen to records that you want to emulate with your producer and

decide on a “sound”/direction for your record?

¨¨ Can you communicate well with your mixing engineer/producer? Do they let

you express your artistic vision?

(Hint: Always use music examples to help show your producer what you’re after.

Better to show than tell to avoid miscommunication.)

¨¨ Once you have your rough mixes, decided if you need to add or take away. If

the song sounds too busy, simplify. If it sounds too plain, get creative and add

some more layers. (Vocal harmonies, harmonica, piano, etc…)

¨¨ Decide if you’re going to be a part of the final mixing stages or not. If so, let the

producer get his sound first before you start chiming in. If you’re still not happy,

then send your notes.

¨¨ Does your record have a Broadcast Quality Mix (professionally mixed – high

quality sound!)

¨¨ Use a different Mastering Engineer than your producer if you can.

¨¨ Choose a good mastering house that doesn’t squash vocals, please! Listen to

samples of work they have done.

¨¨ Do 2 mixes of the masters. 1 mix that is more radio friendly, 1 that is more lo-fi.

¨¨ Sit back and listen! When you get your cd make sure you listen all the way

through. Don’t expect everyone else to have done it the way you want.
