WELCOMEWHETHER YOU’RE RETURNING TO

EDUCATION AFTER A BREAK, WANT TO PROGRESS YOUR CAREER WITH A

HIGHER LEVEL QUALIFICATION, OR ARE LOOKING TO LEARN A NEW SKILL

- WE HAVE A CourSE For you

With hundreds of courses from beginner to degree-level, you’ll be spoilt for choice!

deciding to enrol on a course at college could be that first step towards securing your dream job, changing career completely, discovering a new interest, or getting ahead in your chosen profession.

It’s a fact that people aged 25-64 with a level 3 qualification equivalent to two A levels are much more likely to be in work*. For that reason we call courses at level 3 and above professional-level qualifications, and you’ll find a huge range available at Nottingham College.

It’s not all about professional-level qualifications though. people who undertake training have reported improved communication and team working skills (which are key requirements for many employers), as well as increased confidence levels.

No matter what level of study you choose, it could be a stepping stone to further learning and improved career prospects, as well as being hugely rewarding.

We have hundreds of courses to suit you and your needs. You could choose a full-time course from Entry level to university-level (including top-up degrees), some professional training, A levels, or even a part-time hobby course that could teach you a new skill.

We have great links with business, and in fact much of our curriculum is designed alongside employers to ensure we’re giving you skills that will help in your chosen career.

This guide will give you a flavour of the different types of courses available. When you find something you’re interested in you can give us a call for more details, or visit our websites for comprehensive information about programmes, fees, funding, and student support.

On the following pages, you’ll also hear from some of our students about their experience of studying with us – who better to give you an insight into life at Nottingham College?

You can apply for most of our courses online, and you’ll find full details about how to apply for each course on our websites or by giving us a call.

Browse through this guide to see the vast range of courses available at Nottingham College and at community venues across Nottingham.

It was such a proud feeling graduating in front of my children. I hope this memory stays with them forever, encouraging and inspiring them to work hard for their futures. Eventually, I hope to become a marketing director or set up my own business.”

Zene Soughi, Business Management

“Since completing the course, I discovered a love for teaching! It’s so rewarding passing on the skills I’ve learnt to others who are passionate about dance.

“Studying for my degree at the College was the best decision I’ve made. The smaller class sizes allow for greater support and contact time with your tutors, the facilities are great and the cost is much cheaper than going to university.”

Abigail parsons, Theatre Arts

“I felt a bit anxious at first as I was the oldest person in the class, but actually I enjoyed the course and made friends.

“If anyone is apprehensive about going back to college, I’d recommend they give it a go as it’s been good! It’s given me skills and a professional qualification that I can use if I decide to go back to work part-time.”

ACCESSING A CARING PROFESSIONWe spoke to two of our Access to Nursing and Midwifery students, who are proving that returning to learning works!

peter Areola, is 32 and has always wanted to be a nurse.

peter said: ‘The staff at the College are really knowledgeable and encouraging, and even though I was scared about returning to education as a mature student, my lecturers and fellow students made me feel at ease.

‘My next step is to study Mental health Nursing at the University of Nottingham. I’m looking forward to continuing to learn and grow, and eventually I hope to make a real difference to people suffering with mental health issues.’

Iulia Serbu is 19, and came back to college as she wanted to go to university but hadn’t reached her full potential at school.

Iulia said: ‘I didn’t get the grades I wanted in my A levels, so after some thought I decided to apply for an Access to Nursing and Midwifery course at the College.’

‘I have found that I get better grades on this course, as it is less about exams and more about coursework, and I think this teaching method suits me better.’

‘The course really prepares you for university study, because you have to study independently and complete assignments. I think this is one of the most essential things you’ll need at uni and we also learn research skills.’

‘I now have an offer from the University of Nottingham to study a BSc in Adult Nursing. If anyone is worried about coming back as an adult, I actually think you might understand better than when you were at school! The teachers at the College are very helpful too.’

dId YOU kNOW? You can study an Access to hE course in a wide range of subject areas.

you may be entitled to an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the cost of your Access course fees – even better, if you study an Access course then complete a Student Finance England-funded higher education course, you won’t need to repay the loan.

Apprenticeships are a great way to study for a nationally recognised qualification, get on-the-job training in the workplace and earn money while you learn.

You will be employed by a local company in your chosen area of work and apprenticeships usually take between 12 and 24 months. Your assessor will visit you regularly to support you and you may also attend training sessions at college to boost your knowledge and skills.

We offer different levels of apprenticeship, depending on your existing experience and qualifications. did you know you can even study degree-level apprenticeships?

What can I expect to get paid?Even though you are completing a qualification, you should receive £3.50 per hour (the National Apprenticeship Minimum Wage for anyone aged 16-64 in the first year of their apprenticeship).

If you are aged 19+, you would then move onto the National Minimum Wage for your age range after 12 months (which is higher), although some companies may pay you more.

The futureAt the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll have a recognised qualification and valuable experience under your belt.

Where do I start? You can browse our current apprenticeship vacancies online at www.centralnottingham.ac.uk/apprenticeships or www.ncn.ac.uk/apprenticeships.

If you don’t see a vacancy in an area you’re interested in, please get in touch with our friendly apprenticeship advisors who will be able to help you. just call 0115 945 7260 or 0808 168 7087 and we’ll be happy to help.

Jasmine rose, 17 level 2 Children and Young people Apprenticeship

jasmine is completing her intermediate apprenticeship at Nottingham College’s Once Upon a Time day Nursery.

jasmine said: “Working with children is such a rewarding job; it can be stressful at times but you always go home with a smile on your face. I’m currently the key person for two children at the nursery, which means I work with them individually and complete their learning journeys. It’s a big responsibility but it’s fantastic experience and I’m learning so much.

“Working in a hands-on, practical way is far more suited to me than a classroom environment, so an apprenticeship was the perfect choice.

“I’m planning to progress to the level 3 apprenticeship and one day I’d love to open my own nursery.”

ThE AddEd BONUS IS ThAT YOU gET A WAgE WhIlST YOU’RE STUdYINg

Higher apprenticeships are relatively new qualifications which allow you to study at higher levels and progress into higher skilled occupations.

They provide a combination of on and off-the job training and can really boost your career prospects. They give employers access to the most skilled and up-to-date employees, and allow our students to gain critical first-hand experience of the fields they wish to join. It’s a great opportunity to earn while you learn at a higher level.

higher apprenticeships are a great progression pathway after a level 3 advanced apprenticeship, with the potential to then do level 6 and 7 degree apprenticeships at a higher education provider. As these are competency based qualifications, you would ideally have previous experience of a sector in order to progress on to a higher or degree apprenticeship.

pay rates and entry requirements vary for these higher level apprenticeships – see our websites for full details or call us on 0115 945 7260 or 0808 168 7087 for more information.

Carla Eatherington, 29 part-time Creative Writing and E-publishing

Carla enrolled on a part-time Creative Writing and Self-publishing course at the College. She enjoyed it so much that she recently completed the Follow-on Creative Writing.

Twenty-nine year old Carla said: “The course initially captured my interest because it culminated in publication in both e-book and paperback format, giving me my first taste of authorship!

“The course far exceeded my expectations and I developed skills that I never even knew I needed, such as marketing. The tutors were enthusiastic with plenty of first-hand experience, and the atmosphere was creative and nurturing.

“This is a great course for anyone who thinks they could be an author, or wants to improve their writing skills. Being a part-time course, it’s easy to fit around childcare or employment commitments.”

do your homeworkIt’s a good idea to research the company you have been offered an interview with. have a good look through the website or company brochure as a minimum, and maybe look for recent news stories too. You’ll get to know what to expect, and you’ll feel more confident if asked about the company at interview.

1

know the roleRe-read the job description and person specification (if there is one) and really think through how you could fulfil the role. Read through your application too, so you can remember what you said and can expand on it.

2

How are you getting there?plan your route in advance, and aim to arrive around 15-20 minutes early (unless the company has given you other instructions) so you aren’t rushing. If you’re really early, take a walk around the block first and then go in.

3

Pack a bagTake a copy of your Cv (useful to refer to if you are early and sitting waiting), plus any exam certificates you have, and extra items they may have asked for (like Id). A small notepad and a pen can come in handy too.

ESoL - English for Speakers of Other Languages

An English for Speakers of Other languages (ESOl) course can help in all aspects of your life. HELPING YOU BACK INTO Work

We run a number of sector-based Work Academies that incorporate work experience and guaranteed job interviews in various sectors such as Business Admin, Customer Service, health and Social Care, Warehousing and Retail.

• Food Safety

• First Aid in the Workplace

• Family First Aid

• health and Safety

• Computing for Beginners

• Internet

• Email

• Microsoft Office, Word, Spreadsheets, databases

These specially designed courses help you to improve your employability, update your skills, increase your confidence and get a recognised qualification in the process. The courses are aimed at unemployed people who want to upskill or refresh qualifications and are FrEE to people on JSA , universal Credit, or ESA work-related benefits.

Courses are designed to address the following common issues for today’s jobseekers:

• Improving your confidence

• developing team working skills

• Improving job application skills, Cv and letter writing

• Identifying what employers are looking for on an application form

• how to fill in the ‘skills and experience’ box in a meaningful way
