M ANY doctors thumb their noses at the thought of taking a daily multivitamin pill. But the truth is, we need them. Here are six reasons why: 1. Less than half of all Americans aged 51 or older get adequate amounts of essential nutrients from their regular diets. For those millions of people — and you may be one of them — a multivitamin provides vital nutritional backup. When it comes to getting essential nutrients, a balanced diet is the best route to go. In addition to vitamins and minerals, natural foods provide fiber and disease-fighting micronutrients. But the trick is getting enough nutrition this way. For most people, there are going to be nutritional gaps, and a multivitamin is the best way to fill them. 2. The essential vitamins that can be supplied by a good quality multivitamin include vitamin D. There are only trace amounts in food, far less than we need. Exposure to the sun triggers vitamin D production in the body, but it can also trigger skin cancer and the American Adademy of Dermatology recommends against it, advising people to get their vitamin D from a daily supplement. The recommended dose of 400 International Units (IUs) a day, but new research indicates you should take a multivitamin that contains at least 1,000 IUs. Vitamin D can prevent cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure. 3. Doctors advise their patients to take a multivitamin with 200 IUs of vitamin E and 70 micrograms (mcgs.) of selenium, which helps the vitamin work better. 4. Folic acid, a B vitamin, fights high blood pressure, heart disease and cancers of the breast and colon. The standard dose is 400 mcgs. a day, and that amount should not be exceeded. 5. Vitamin A is toxic in large doses and can cause liver damage and weaken bones. The safest way to go is to take this nutrient in the form of beta carotene, a substance that must be converted to vitamin A by the body. Doing this greatly reduces the risk of bad side effects. 6. Many people can’t absorb vitamin B-12 from food due to low levels of stomach acid. Too little of this nutrient can lead to anemia, mental impairment, nerve damage, fatigue, weakness, weight loss, depression and mouth sores. Most multivitamins contain between 6 mcgs. and 400 mcgs. No harmful side effects have been associated with higher doses, but you should look for a multivitamin that 26 EXAMINER AUGST 5, 2019 A WHOLESOME LIFESTYLE KEEPS YOU HEALTHY AND HAPPY — SO KEEP AT IT! But the truth is, we need them. Here are six reasons why:

WOULD you feel foolish if folks caught you confiding in your cat? Gabbing with your gladio-la? Complimenting your coupe?

Don’t feel foolish, when — according to science — you’re actually demonstrating your intelligence. Anthropomorphism, which is the attribution of human char-acteristics or behavior to an animal or object, is per-fectly normal and shows brains on your part.

“Historically, anthropo-morphizing has been treated as a sign of childishness or stupidity, but it’s actually a natural byproduct of the tenden-cy that makes humans uniquely smart on this planet,” says Nicholas Epley, a

professor of behavioral science at the University of Chicago.

There are three primal reasons why we might anthropomorphize an object: The non-human subject looks like it has a face, we’d like to be friends with it, or we can’t explain its unpredictable behavior.

We also have a tendency to endow an object that looks like it has eyes to also have a mind.

“Fake eyes are a trick we fall for almost every time—one that can dupe

us into seeing a mind where no mind exists,” says Epley. “As a

member of one of the plan-et’s most social species, you are hypersensitive to eyes because they offer a

window into another per-son’s mind.”

And the lonelier we
