Go Against The Current A Note From The Editor

I thought I’d write a short note to encourage your spirits. Understand that this world that we live in is constantly trying to pull you away from your potential greatness. You were destined a plan for your life, I truly believe that. We are all here for a reason and while you’re searching for that, and even getting closer to your will, there is a current trying to pull you away and move you deeper and deeper into the sea.

The shore is waiting for you to swim to it. Way too often we just let life knock us down, and we begin moving deeper into the waves feeling lost, stuck, or sinking. The way situations looks right now in our world, it’s easy for many people to stay there. Yet I tell you this, if you can go against the current and find yourself back at shore, there’s joy just WAITING for you. But you can’t get there until you swim against the current and reach the shore.

Hip Hop: Past Present and Future?

Hip hop has come a long way since its humble roots. From freestyle battles, the Sugar Hill Gang, gangsta rap to hip-hop all over the world. What was once written as a passing fad has now become the voice of just about every youth where hip-hop is available. Some say it’s at its end, while others in disagreement proclaim it’s only the beginning. Whether or not this genre will continue is truly at task for time to decide.

Hip hop was about pure hearted fun, and love of music. As time went on, artists began to use it as a platform to educate misguided youth on staying away from drugs and other harmful things. Then when all was quiet in the western front N.W.A. came straight out of Compton, opening the door for west coast rap.

Sure hip hop became violent, yet at the same time letting America know how tough life really was.

A few years later, rappers began to talk about money, get crunk and techno showed up. Which brings me to hip hop today. Half of the artists now are in there forty's and the other half are half their age. The "vets" refuse to pass the torch and the youth have no guidance leaving rap as tasteless as ever. Hip hop sales have dropped dramatically since 2005, I know the net has a part in that but come on, rap just isn't what it use to be. The return of the one hit wonders is exactly why I can't see a future for rap music. I'm starting to hear KIDS complain more and more about how hip hop lacks depth and how every song sounds the same, that's a major red flag. Outside of the country UK artists who've attempted success in America say that there is no creativity in the lyrics. Could hip hop die off in its own back yard? With the way things are going it’s a high possibility in the not so distant future. I want to believe that hip hop will always be around, but it feels like the genre is on its way out.

By Tony Wilson Reaching a little over a decade of making hits, Tech N9ne will be listened to from generation to generation. The Kansas City artist began rapping at a young age to help him remember how to spell his name. In 1999, Tech and Travis O’Guin started the record label Strange Music. Now in 2012, he has sold over one million records. Whether you know him from his crazy flow, or style, Tech N9ne is one that stands out amongst artists from the past and now.

What is the difference between you then and now? I was on drugs and I was crazy (laughing). I’ve been clean for over 5 years now and it’s funny how I’m getting older but my fans are getting younger and younger. That’s a blessing because it keeps us Relevant.

Out of all the Independent artists that have come and gone you have to be the main one who has allowed up and comers to be creative and not

worry about what a record label says.

I wanted my artists to express themselves and not try to be what they hear or see on the TV or radio. I want them to go higher, bring validity to their music and connect with people. Do you think that’s why you have such a loyal group of fans? Yeah because my fans see me inside and out. I give them all of me and because I’m 3 dimensional. My fans feel me because I give them everything. I notice a lot of new artists try to rap double time now like you Twista and bone thugs and harmony. Not knowing that you’ve been consistent with it your whole career. Oh yeah, I’m the Number one chopper and I connect with all the other choppers. They’re trying to get me to do another worldwide choppers. You’ve collaborated with artists from all walks of life. Is there anyone you haven’t collaborated with that you want to? Eminem, I want to see what I sound like with whom I feel is the best rapper. I got to work with Lil Wayne, which was beautiful, and Andre 3000, which was big, and now I want to work with Em if time permits. (Continued on next page)

What’s the most important thing in trying to connect with fans and building a fan base if you’re a new artist? When I was starting out I remember asking myself what do I know more then anyone and it was I know myself and myself is similar to somebody else out there. We all have life in common so rap what you know don’t rap somebody else’s life.
