Term 4 Week 5 Edition

You may have heard your child talking about these words at home. These dispositions are PERSIST, USE FEEDBACK and CONNECT. We are tweaking our year group awards at our term Principal’s Assemblies to reflect the Visible Learning focus; we will now include at least 1 award for a child that is demonstrating these dispositions.

Sandy Ryan

Principal

This week we welcome back HCS’s own version of royalty, Rachel. This is not just a regular visit — this time we are celebrating 10 years of working with the Australian Children’s Music Foundation. We look forward to sharing with our community all we have learnt over the years at the ACMF Concert this Thursday.

Music, music, music! Congratulations to our Senior School Band who performed at the Leeton Outback Band Spectacular over the weekend. All students are to be commended on their performance. A huge thank you to Mrs Bartholomew for her continued dedication to our school band and organising this great opportunity for our students. And to Mr Laurich who enhances our senior band with his talent on the tuba.

As part of our whole school commitment to Visible Learning, all students have been participating in two 20 minute lessons per week, all year. During these lessons students have been focusing on understanding the characteristics or dispositions of an effective learner and how to apply these skills to their learning.

GIRL’S NIGHT IN

#bigthanks #biglove #biglaughs

We donated $1000 to the Cancer Council

and

We deposited $265.30 to Hillston CAN ASSIST.

Special thanks to every person who attended to ensure the night was a great success.

Auctioning our precious garments was touching and poignant.

Lindsay Adams’ sensational Lemon Meringue Pie fetched $80 at auction and included all HCS ingredients.

Hannah Dalton delighted the crowd with a funny, embarrassing story, which resonated with all of us.

The candle ceremony was a moment to remember, reflect and be grateful for times passed and times to come.

Gardening and Sustainability

Kinder have been exploring Gardening

and Sustainability this term.

In Art the students were directed to

collect leaves from the playground and

glue tail feathers on an emu. Students

discussed Daddy emus looking after the

babies while Mummy emus went to work.

The whole class then joined the Blues

Brothers to… Shake a Tail Feather!

Remembrance Day Service

We held a Remembrance Day service on Friday ahead of Sunday’s 100th anniversary of Armistice Day. Matthew

Downing shared the importance and meaning of this day for us to acknowledge all Australians who have served

our country. Students placed poppies around the old school bell in memory of those who have served.

Visible Learning Update

What makes an effective learner? Our school

community voted and we think effective stu-

dents need to PERSIST, USE FEEDBACK and

CONNECT.

Throughout this year, students have participat-

ed in 20 minutes lessons focusing on what per-

sistence looks like and sounds like in the school

context as well as how to give and receive

effective feedback.

This term we are focusing on the final charac-

teristic/disposition of Connect. Students whom

are able to connect their learning to previous

knowledge or something in their ‘real’ world

are more likely to be engage and have a deep

understand a topic.

Stay tuned for updates on making connections

to learning
