TRANSCRIPT
It is here…the last week of the last Summer Term, which means it is officially
your last week in year 5 and in September you will become our new year 6.
This week, we have decided to test a number of maths and English skills to
see if you can put together a music festival. There is much planning involved
and it is a great way for you to see how maths and English is applied in the
real world. We would love to see your festivals so please remember to send
any examples of work or ask us any questions; we are here to help. The email
address is: [email protected]
On the very last page, you will see an advert for an invitation for year 5 pupils
to have a socially distanced tour arranged at Brittons Academy for this
month. This will hopefully get you thinking about secondary schools for the
not so distant future.
Remember this is what we would like you to complete over the course of the
week: English and Maths tasks for each day, your daily spelling activity,
your spelling sheet, your spelling activities, your comprehension activity
and choose one activity for each subject from the home learning projects
sheet.
You have an option of completing the ‘Additional Curriculum tasks’ if you
would like. We would love to see examples of any completed tasks.
Please find your work in the following order: English Writing Tasks, Spellings,
Spelling activities, Reading Comprehension, Maths, Home learning projects
and additional curriculum activities.
Have a great summer, remember to stay safe and we all look forward to
having you back at school in September.
Mrs Lewis, Miss Van Haeften and Mr Callus
Goodbye Year 5
Mrs Lewis
Goodbye Year 5 A fantastic year has come and gone, And now it’s time to move along. Though I’m sad to see you go, I really loved to watch you grow. You've lost your teeth, you've grown so tall, so many changes since the fall! Lots of laughter, a couple of tears, but most of all, We've tamed our fears. We can read and we can write, We can even explain day and night! We learned so much, we worked so hard, You are each a shining star! All of us, unique inside, With special gifts we just can't hide!
Good luck Year 5, I wish I could be there to say goodbye in person! You are going to do great in Year
6! Remember to try your best and work as hard as you can!
Lots of love and luck,
Mrs Lewis
😊
Miss Van Haeftan
Hello 5U,
What a funny year we have had together but at
least you will always remember year 5 – the year
that was cancelled!
I have loved teaching you all and I am extremely
sad that we didn’t get to finish off the year
properly and I didn’t get to know you all as
much as I wanted to. However, we did manage
to squeeze in a few fun memories. My favourite
was our trip to The British Museum, where we
learnt about the Viking burial site. Also, us
racing to the bus stop after swimming every
week, which seems funny now (although wasn’t
at the time!).
I hope you have a lovely summer holiday and I
look forward to seeing you all in September!
Stay safe.
Miss Van Haeften
Mr Callus Hello year 5, What a crazy year it has been for all of you. I hope that you are all safe and sound and I am very much looking forward to seeing you all back at school from September. It was definitely not the year we were all expecting and I am sorry that you have missed out on some events in school that traditionally take place towards the end of the year. On the brightside, you will be returning to us as our new year 6, where fingers crossed, you will be able to take part in activities around the school that year 6 usually do. You should be proud of yourselves to have got through such difficult times, where I am sure there have been some ups and downs for everyone. I am sorry that half a school year was taken from us, but none the less, that just means that you will have to make the most of your time in year 6! Have a great summer, stay safe and I know that you will all do really well in year 6.
Mr Callus Miss Jones Hi Year 5,
Firstly, I just wanted to say thank you for making this year so interesting for me, as someone who
has never supported Year 5 before, this has been much of a learning curve for me alongside you.
I know this year has been has been a difficult year due to the current situation, and nothing like we
anticipated. But I am proud of every single one of you and you should be proud as well!
Thank you for being such an amazing year group and for all the laughs we’ve had this year. Good
luck in Year 6, and in the future. I know you will all do great!
I will miss you all!
From, Miss Jones
Mrs Massey Hello year 5, I hope you are all keeping well and are being

Festival gooer Comments
Nathaniel
The main reason I go to festivals is to listen to music live. Nothing beats listening to one of your favourite songs live with your mates. Crowds are definitely the worst thing about going to festival, having the feeling of not being in a small space and not being to leave without having to push people is horrible.
Rebekah I love going to festivals as I like to meet a range of different people and make friends. The toilets at festivals are the worst! The waiting is soooo long and the toilets themselves are disgusting! I always bring my own toilet roll and hand sanitiser.
Lauren I love the different food and drink you can get at festivals; I always get to taste something different when I go to a festival! However the queing for the food and drink is a joke, once I missed some of my favourite act because I was lining up for a hot dog!

Task 1 - Ruler breakers
As with most spelling rules, there are some exceptions. This is true
when it comes to the rule, i before e except after c.
Here are a list of ei words where the e comes before the i when
there is NO c!
Task 2
Reading Comprehension
Maths
Times tables (approx. 10 min) – Can also use Times Tables Rock Stars if possible
This week’s maths is linked to your English and is all based around planning a summer festival.
Monday Play some of the times table games here: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/7-11-years/times-tables If you cannot access this, practise all of your times tables using some of the games and activities from previous weeks.
Today’s task is linked to your knowledge of perimeter and area. Perimeter is the space around the outside of a shape – usually measured in cm/m. Area is the space inside a shape – usually measured in cm/m². In this activity you have to plan where everything at your festival will fit within a grid. Each square on the grid represents an area of 10m².
Tuesday Create a times tables test using all your times tables knowledge for someone in your family or send it to your teacher. Make sure you know the answers!
Today’s task is linked to your knowledge of addition. You will need to work out how much money the festival will cost to run and add all your costs together. The amount of money you spend is called your outgoings.
Wednesday Find some times table songs on YouTube and learn your favourite one – we would love to see a video! If you cannot access YouTube or you want to challenge yourself, write your own times table song to the tune of a song you like. Choose the times table you find the most difficult to remember.
Today’s task is linked to your knowledge of addition. You will need to work out how much money you will make by running the festival and add all the money you make together. The amount of money you make is called your income.
Thursday Investigate! See what patterns you can spot within times tables and between different times tables. Create a poster to show what you have found.
Today’s activity is linked to your knowledge of time and working within a time limit. You will need to use the information on the slides to work out how long each event will need and then create a useable timetable that will work for your festival. Remember to think of a start and end time to help you.
Friday Email your teacher at:
[email protected] for a special times tables quiz!
DRAGON’s DEN! Watch this clip from Dragon’ Den: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYeeOarxfng
*Just a reminder for students: where you see tasks labelled */** or **/*** this is the usual challenge level of work you would
do at school or based on how confident you feel with the topic. You only need to do one of these (of course do both if you
want to
Imagine you are on Dragon’s Den trying to get funding from a big company to help you run your festival. Present everything you have done this week to someone in your family or send to your teacher. Are they willing to invest?
Monday
In order for there to be a festival, you need to plan your space! Read the slides
and use the planning sheet or some paper to plan your festival area. Make sure
you have everything you need and that you are following the sizing guidelines.
Tuesday
Festivals don’t come free! Today you will need to work out your outgoings for
this festival, that means how much money you will need to spend to get the
festival up and going! Read the slides and work out how much money this
festival is going to cost you using the budget sheet below.
Budget Sheet
Wednesday
As well as spending money, you also need to make money! This is called your
income and ideally you want your income to be more than your outgoings so
that you get a PROFIT from your festival (make more money than you spend).
Read these slides and work out what your income might be for your festival
using the income sheet below.
Income Sheet
Thursday
Now your venue and artists and traders are all ready, you need to think about
the timings for your festival. Think of a start and end time, then read the slides
and design a running order of events to guests know when they can see their
favourite acts.
Year 5 Learning Projects – Week 12
Music Science French Choose at least 1 from the following: Task 1 – Make and write your own music Can you create a catchy sound? Can you put the groove back into your parent’s step? Create symbols and denote the sounds they mean. For example, a star symbol means ‘clap’, a circle means ‘stomp your foot’, a triangle means ‘hit the desk’, and a square means ‘snap your fingers’. Can you create a symbol for pace – so you can speed up or slow down the rhythm. Practice putting together a string of sounds that you like. Put these instructions on a piece of paper by using the symbols you have created and get someone else to follow and play your music. Can you send us teachers your music? We can judge how good they are! Task 2 – Texture and Structure Texture is the layers of sound created by playing together or separately throughout a song. In this animation hear from Nitin Sawhney about how he uses texture in his music. Make sure you click on the texture video featuring Nitin Sawhney. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zrj4ydm Structure is the order that different parts of the song are played in. Traditional pop music usually follows a verse, chorus, verse structure. In this video Elvis explains how to use structure in pop songs. Make

will you measure how hard it was to
push each boat? You also need to
think about where you will conduct
the investigation, will it be in a sink?
Or a bath?
Now that you have thought about
the shape of boat, how you will
answer the question and where you
will conduct the experiment. You
now need to record and conduct
your experiment. Complete the
investigation write sheet.

Boat Shapes
Science Task 1 - Investigation write up
Conclusion – Answer these questions in the form of a paragraph. Remember PEEL? Point, Evidence, Explain, Link Which shape of boat moved faster through the water? Which shape was easier to push across the water? How do you know which boat moved faster or better through the water? Why do you think that was? Was it something to do with certain shapes being more streamline? Or perhaps something to do with the surface area of certain shapes?
Science – Task 2 - Friction
Question:
We are going to investigate friction by testing how far a 2 pence piece will travel
when pushed.
We will test different surfaces:
To make our test fair, we will keep these things the same:
Our Results:
Surface Distance (cm)
