You don’t have to be a highly paid superstar athlete to need arthroscopic surgery, get a torn rotator cuff repaired or have any number of other sports medicine procedures done. Dr. Augustine Conduah sees a lot of weekend warriors in his practice as an orthopedic surgeon at DeKalb Medical at Hillandale. Everyday people are participating in road races, triathlons, mixed martial arts training, pick-up basketball, and various sports and activities that can lead to injuries from trauma or simple overuse. And sometimes these conditions are caused by the most intense of all sports - the game of life and aging. “I was trained specifically in sports medicine,” Dr. Conduah said. “Most people, when they think of sports medicine they think of the higher-end athletes. But, like most orthopedic surgeons who are sports medicine specialists, we take care of the weekend warrior, the high school athlete, the manual labor and depending on the practice, the more mature population.” It takes a lot of drive, discipline and determination to become a doctor. Drive that’s taken Dr. Conduah around the world to attain a goal first envisioned by the Ghana, West Africa native in the seventh grade. His family then immigrated to Madison, Wisconsin, where they remained throughout most of his high school years before moving to California. ere he earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and went on to medical school and his orthopedic residency training at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Next, the young doctor ventured to Georgia to complete a post-training fellowship at the Hughston Clinic, famous for its sports medicine practice. Now, for the past four years, Dr. Conduah has utilized his considerable skill on behalf of the citizens of DeKalb, Rockdale and surrounding counties serviced by DeKalb Medical at Hillandale. “It’s been fortunate to be able to provide services to the community in an area that was previously traveling elsewhere,” Dr. Conduah said.
