Moses was misdiagnosed before receiving the treatment he needed

Moses is seven years old. In November 2016 he was diagnosed with cancer but like many children in developing countries, his route to diagnosis was a difficult and challenging one.

When Victor noticed a swelling on his son’s neck he took him to the local village

hospital. After being referred to the central district hospital, Moses was diagnosed with

tuberculosis and sent home with four tablets.

Despite the medication, Moses’ condition did not improve and Victor grew increasingly concerned for his son’s welfare so took him back to hospital. Moses was eventually referred to the paediatric oncology unit at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, which is supported by World Child Cancer.

Dr Chagaluka, the country’s only paediatric oncologist whose training was supported by World Child Cancer, requested a biopsy and the results revealed that Moses had cancer. Moses is now under-going treatment but his route to diagnosis and treatment should not have been this difficult.

World Child Cancer is working to help more children like Moses by raising awareness of the early warning signs of childhood cancer amongst local healthcare workers. With the support of volunteer doctors and nurses from the UK, we are improving the accuracy of diagnosis in the countries in which we work.

Increasing awarenessMany families and healthcare workers in rural areas have no awareness of cancer or that it can affect children. In some languages, there is not even a word for cancer.

World Child Cancer changes this by raising awareness in local communities and providing

training for healthcare workers.

Supporting diagnosisPeople living in rural areas often have no access to modern healthcare. Instead of visiting medical professionals, poorly skilled healthcare workers are consulted first, which results in misdiagnosis and valuable time lost.

World Child Cancer provides training for medical professionals to help identify the early warning signs of childhood cancer and provide a better quality of care.

Countering povertyMany families in developing countries are already living in poverty. Most families struggle to cover the costs of travel to and from hospital let alone that of food, accommodation, diagnostics and treatment.

We support some of the poorest and most vulnerable families in the world by alleviating these costs and helping them to maintain an income.
