Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time (A) Is 58:7-10 1 Car 2:1-5 Mt 5:13-16

You Are Really Something! The description of the disciples found in today's

Gospel is an impressive compliment-and an even greater cha11enge. Jesus tells them they are "salt of the earth" (Matthew 5:13), bringing out the good taste of living. In other words, life would be bland and uninteresting without them. They are also the "light of the world" (Matthew 5:14), helping people find their way. Without them, others would stumble and fall. Jesus is telling them how important they are in the lives of others. They could each and all say: I am really something!

Such compliments are also a challenge. What must one do to be salt and light in the lives of others? The Isaian passage provides some suggestions: Share your bread with the hungry; shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked; don't turn your back on your own; remove from your midst oppression, false accusation, and malicious speech. In other words, to be salt or light is to meet the needs of the needy. This teaching of Jesus is not as easy as it might at first look.

Jesus is speaking to his disciples, his followers. They are not those who are simply curious about this itinerant preacher or remarkable healer. They have chosen to follow him, not merely from place to place, but to model their lives after his. Isn't that what we also claim to be-his followers? Haven't we promised to model our lives after his? If so, as both compliment and challenge he says to us as well, "You are really something!"

=Sr. Dianne Bergant, CSA

Dea» Padtre, My church spends too much on flower arrangements. Are they really needed?

Flowers and plants in homes and other buildings create a sense of beauty and welcome. They also help lift the spirits of the infirm in hospitals and

the pall of sadness from those who mourn a loved one. Similarly, flowers in churches awaken our senses, embody hospitality, and enliven our spirits. Moreover, living flowers and plants serve "as a reminder of the gift of life God has given to the human community" ("Built of Living Stones," 129, USCCB, 2000).

Along with other church adornments-both fixed and movable-flowers enkindle in the worshiper a feeling of what St. Peter said at the transfiguration, "Lord, it is good that we are here" (Matthew 17:4, Luke 9:33). They add dignity to the sacred space and visually express the holiness of the mysteries celebrated there. "Sacred buildings and requisites for divine worship should be truly worthy and beautiful and be signs and symbols of heavenly realities" (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 288).

Nevertheless, "floral decoration should always show moderation and be arranged around the altar rather than on the altar table" (GIRM 305). Restraint in floral decoration is the norm during Advent. It's forbidden during Lent, except on Laetare Sunday and feasts, although simple compositions other than flowers are permissible.

To control costs, some parishes rely on volunteers with flower-arranging skills. Arrangements left behind at funerals and funeral homes and from church weddings are also offered for the benefit of the faithful.

A WORD FROM Pope Aanci& Christian life has to be a life that must blossom in works of charity, in doing what is good. But if you have no roots, you cannot blossom, and who is the root? Jesus! ... "What blossoms a tree bears come from what lies underneath it." Never cut off Jesus' roots.

Please complete and return your letter of intent for returning next year. We have started waiting lists in many grades. Academically, students in Catholic schools have scores that rank above the national average on achievement tests and greater than 95 percent graduate and go on to higher education. More importantly, students obtain an education centered on moral, academic and faith-filled values. Our tuition will be $6000 for next year. Our registration fee is $50 per family if enrolled before St. Joseph's Feast Day which is March 19th. After that the enrollment fee is $75. Please be sure you are applying for scholarships and talking with Mrs. Hackett and Mrs. Teran. If your family has 1st and 2nd year scholarships you do not need to apply to scholarships. LITURGY MEETING A Liturgical Meeting has been scheduled for Saturday February 15th after the 7:00 am mass. All Ministry Leads and Coordinators involved in the mass and liturgy are to attend. Any Ministry Leads or Group Leads preparing for the liturgies should also attend.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT Time flies when you're having fun! It has been a pleasure and fun to meet many of you that have come in to take the Safe Environment Education Training classes this past year. Yes, it has been a year since I began working here at St. Joseph Parish. Any volunteer or employee that has not attended this 2 hour training this past year may attend the next classes in the coming months. Those whom have attended, your renewal will be due on the month you had attended last year. The renewal class will be approximately a 30 to 40 minute session. I will send out more details on the renewal classes in the coming weeks. The next 2 hour training will be on Wednesday February 12 at 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in Room 16 and Thursday February 13 at 10:00 am to 12 Noon in the St. Francis Room in the Parish Center building #2. You only need to attend one class. Happy New Year, Eileen Kuns

A recent Marist poll finds, among other things, that by more than 10% points (52% to 41%), a majority of Americans believe that women should be required to have an ultrasound prior to having an abortion. Also, by a margin of

more than five to one (80% to 14%), Americans believe that laws can protect both a mother and her unborn child. Lent begins this month. We will be supporting Stations of the Cross and serving soup on Fridays during Lent. We will provide satisfying and free meatless soup options, bread and salad with a goodwill offering option. The seafood bisque at our pre-superbowl party was well received (even though Kansas City BBQ won) so a variation on that will most likely be an option during Lent. Thanks again to all who came to that community event.

"News You Can Use"

Pre-K to 6th Grades: This Sunday, we celebrate 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time. This Sunday, in the Gospel Jesus commissions his followers to be "the salt of the earth" and "light to the world." Salt and light are just as important to us today as they were to people in Jesus' time. Jesus' image of salt challenges us to bring out the best in others as salt brings out the best flavors in food. The image of light challenges us to warm and brighten others' lives like sunlight. It challenges us to live as Jesus did so that our actions shine forth like a lamp on a stand.

Growing Together

Faith

Challenges: Talk together about how the whole family can shine God's light on all they meet. Talk about how each member of the family can make a difference in the home and in the world. Remember that the little things count. Explore ways your family is already salt for the world, and how you can do more to make the world a better place. Together, talk about problems that your family may face and discover how you can bring salt and light to the ways you face them.

Note from the Pastor,

Dear Saint Joseph's Parish. I hope 2020 has been a blessing to you and your family. As a family, we continue to keep each other in our prayers.

I want to thank everyone for the great successes we are experiencing here at St. Joseph's Parish. I want to commend the Knights of Columbus for the many activities and the many free meals they have provided after the 5:30 mass on Saturdays. Those meals were practice runs in preparation to the Priest Appreciation Dinner they are hosting for the Diocese of Tucson. Thanks!

I hope everyone is using January and February to rest from Advent and Christmas season. Wow! What a great and powerful season! Thanks to everyone involved! The Lenten season is fast approaching with our preparation of the Resurrection of our Lord at Easter! We look forward to the many events planned such as Stations of the Cross, Confirmation Retreats, 1st Holy Communion, etc.

Church Renovations I have had many questions concerning the renovations of the church. If you look to the choir side of the church you will see that we are starting to sand down the pews so we can re-stain the wood. We have already started to strip the marble flooring. If you want to see a difference, look at the East floor where the choir is located and you will see how bright the marble looks. Looking forward to working on the light issue also! So, much work so little time. The work will be done in-house. We already have volunteers ready to help out with the work. We hope to contact you this February. We hope to work out some schedule.

I have scheduled the following meetings for February. All Committee meetings: Parish Council, Finance committee, Board of Directors will meet in the main church at 6:00pm on February 11. Liturgy Meeting (After the 7:00am mass) on February 15 and a Finance Committee (6:00 pm Main office) February 19. Everyone on these committees will also be contacted by Eileen as a reminder.

~\Catho4: 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal ~"b. Living Our Faith Through ~..-~ -,i Acts of Charity

"How marvelous it would be if, at the end of the day, each of us could say: today I have performed

an act of charity towards others" - Pope Francis

Each year, at this time, we are encouraged to consider the needs of our Church and of the Diocese as one family in Christ.

Through the Annual Catholic Appeal, we are asked to make a commitment to support the work of our diocesan programs and ministries that provide services which no one parish could provide on its own. It is our call to reach beyond the boundaries of our parish, and the confines of our own personal sphere, to help build up our faith community and uplift our brethren.

Just as we are one in the Body of Christ, we must remember that we are one with other parishes.

"Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others" - Philippians 2:4
