There is nothing more
precious than voting.
Do you know that people with disabili-
ties are about 20% less likely to vote
than those without disabilities?
Do you know if people with disabilities
voted at the same rate as those without
disabilities, there would bee approxi-
mately 4.6 million additional voters.
During this presidential election year it
is imperative that the disability commu-
nity’s voice be heard at the polls.
We must insure that our concerns are
addressed as political parties are less
likely to contact people with disabilities
in their campaigns.
Please make sure you are registered to
vote. Carefully watch the debates and
prepare yourself to make an educated
decision in the August primaries and in
the November general election.
VOTE.
Dear Arc Member, Friend and Supporter:
Your membership to The Arc Detroit is important. We all have obli-
gations each and every one of us. I am all too aware that some of
our members may be experiencing personal economic difficulties.
Let me tell you about one of our consumers. Independent most of
her life, she shared her apartment with her cat for over 25 years.
She worked in the community, participated in her church, and lived
a full enriching life. She was diagnosed with cancer and went
through treatment and was free of cancer for five years. Recently she was told the cancer has reappeared and
the cancer aggressive. On January 12, 2016 she passed away. During her illness and funeral, The Arc Detroit
rallied behind her and provided her the supports coordination to ensure her medical care, hospice care, and
arranged her funeral services.
For others we provide self-advocacy training, recreational and educational program and parent outreach pro-
jects. To continue our delivery of advocacy and supports for persons with developmental disabilities, I find
myself once again, soliciting the financial support of our membership and friends so that we can continue to
assist everyone who seeks our support.
We are all reaching out to help each other get through these challenging times. With ever decreasing charita-
ble and program dollars, our traditional funding sources have not kept up with rising costs and inflation in op-
erating The Arc Detroit. Because of this, The Arc Detroit is hopeful you will again be generous during this pe-
riod of Membership Renewal.
At The Arc Detroit we have an advantage. We have you. We have you to help those families who are advocat-
ing insuring the best education program for their loved ones, the parents who are exploring bold new opportu-
nities for their children with intellectual impairments and developmental disabilities, and advocating on behalf
of their brothers and sisters to understand the difficult maze of entitlements – Medicaid, Medicare, Social Se-
curity, etc. You will not only touch the lives of those we serve directly, but also their friends and family mem-
bers who need encouragement.
Your membership to The Arc Detroit is important to us. We honor your commitment. It is through you gener-
osity that The Arc Detroit will continue to be a beacon of light and a source of hope for the thousands of chil-
dren and adults with intellectual impairments and developmental disabilities and their families throughout De-
troit.
