Jeannine Neuen
Retires
I came across the article that I wrote for the February 2001 High Spire. So this is reflection time for Jeannine using that first article that I wrote, and updating for May 2015.
As your not-so-new Director of Christian Education and the “old kid on the block,” I am writing to thank you for the warm welcome you have given me and my family over the last 14 years.
Our journeys in life take us to many exciting and rewarding places. When our family made the decision to move to Baltimore in December of 2000, we closed the doors on familiar territory and began our new journey. The Holy Spirit works in wonderful and exciting ways, and I am so happy we were lead to Towson United Methodist Church. I have learned with you, worked with you, and been in fellowship with you, the staff, and many wonderful volunteers. Many special friendships have been made.
My mother and sister still live in Memphis and I still have a southern accent. “You can take the girl out of the south, but not the south out of the girl.” These last 26 years I have worn many hats while serving as Director of Christian Education in Ft. Wayne, Indiana and at Towson UMC. I think that is one of the many things I loved about my career. The variety of experiences and the many wonderful children, youth, and adults that I have had the privilege of working with cannot be measured.
When I began working at TUMC, our older son David was in his first year of seminary, and our son Scott was a freshman at Vanderbilt. David is now serving in his 3rd church and is the Senior Minister at Sellersburg UMC in Indiana near Louisville. He and Cindy have 2 children, Addison and Anna. Scott is with Sherwin Williams, and he and his wife Alicia live in Chicago, and they have one son, Bryce and are expecting a little girl the first of August. Gary and I have not aged one bit! You have watched our family grow, and I have watched your families grow. We have been on this journey of life together.
I still have a passion for the educational ministries of the church, and I look forward to working alongside you as a “Servant in Service.” We will continue to grow and learn together.
—Jeannine Neuen

Springtime is bursting now and with it comes some wonderful opportunities in May at church. May 10 is Mother’s Day and we will celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates. May 17 will have a youth emphasis, we will also re-dedicate the church steeple during the service and have a special program after worship. And May 24 will be our celebration of Pentecost so remember to wear red that day.
I also want to fill you in on how some of our staff responsibilities are shifting. First, a big thank you to Jeannine Neuen who has been an our outstanding Director of Christian Education at TUMC for 14 years. Our children and families have been blessed to have the influence of Jeannine’s gentle wisdom and loving faith. She has truly been one of the ministers of our church and we will miss her on staff as well. Her last Sunday with us will be May 3 and we will have a celebration in honor of Jeannine during and after church on June 14 so be sure to put that date on your calendar.
Beginning in May, Margery’s role will shift. She will take on the responsibilities of Christian Education for children and as well as youth, with some oversight of adult education as well. She will also not be serving in worship at 10:15 every week so that she is able to be with classes and teachers, KIDZ and Children and Worship. She will continue to preach about every six weeks and occasionally offer some pastoral care. Through the spring, we will be shifting shut-in visitation primarily to volunteers. We have begun putting together a workable approach and will be in touch with the congregation soon about how we see this coming together. In the mean time, if you are interested in visiting some of our church members at home, please let me know and we will certainly include you.
Another staff responsibility shift is taking place with Kim Ayres. Since January, Kim, who is our business manager, has also taken on the administrative roles of our receptionist/office manager. Calendar and room scheduling, special bulletins, people data base, and answering the phone has all shifted to Kim. Volunteers are helping in the office and we are grateful for their service.
The Staff-Parish Relations Committee has formed a task force to develop a comprehensive volunteers approach for our church. You will see a plan for “Servants in Service” (our term for volunteers) later this summer. I expect this approach to help us move forward as one church in new ways that we have not seen before. More to come.
In Christ,
Rod

Dear friends,
On behalf of Marilyn and for myself, I thank you so
much for the Easter plant you gave her. Though she
cannot talk, I’m sure she was so happy to receive it and
to see someone she knew delivering it. On top of that, she
is of Holland Dutch descent, and she loves tulips … and
the plant delivered is a tulip!
Thank you so much.
Sincerely, Bill Raker
To My Dear Church Friends,
Thank you for the tulips sent to me at Easter.
They were beautiful red with yellow centers — breath
taking. Christ’s love was certainly represented by the
gorgeous flowers and thoughtfulness.
Sincerely, Suey McLean

The members of Towson United Methodist
Church would like to invite you to join us as we
celebrate the completion of the rehabilitation work of
the Steeple. The Steeple was originally constructed in
1958. The 2011 earthquake & Superstorm Sandy and
then the derecho of 2012 caused extensive damage to
the original structure. A decision was made to totally
rehabilitate the Steeple with work beginning in
November 2013. The rehabilitation work was
completed this month at a cost of over $735,000.
We will be having a reception in Fellowship Hall
on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at 11:30 AM to celebrate
this wonderful accomplishment of rehabilitating this
local Towson landmark. We would be very happy if
you were able to join us in the momentous occasion.
Light snacks and beverages will be served.
You are also encouraged to join us for a church
service starting at 10:15 AM that day, where the
Steeple will be rededicated to honor God’s Love.

ARE YOU MISSING SUNDAY MORNINGS
BECAUSE OF FAMILY CONFLICTS OR WORK
AND NEED SOMETHING PLANNED
DURING THE WEEK?
OR NEED A SCHEDULED PRAYER TIME?
You are invited to come for contemplative prayer, which we are
calling Attentional Prayer, every Tuesday night at 6:00 PM in the chapel.
This is not a worship service. It’s a time to come to be quiet and in the silence — listen to God. A great opportunity to use your prayer beads. It’s a scheduled time to meditate — about 20 minutes. Petitions for prayer may be shared before the time of meditation.
Try it — you might like it! ________________________________________________________
Would You Like Individual Prayer Sunday Mornings?
Meet a member of the congregation in the back corner of the sanctuary after worship Sunday morning if you would like someone to be in prayer with you.
UPPER ROOM — devotionals are available in regular and large print. You
can find them on the credenza under the pictures of the church’s stained glass windows in the main lobby.
Aurora’s Prayer Garden
Aurora’s Prayer Garden is located on the west side of the church, facing the afternoon sun. A perfect place to gather your thoughts, read, write something in your journal, or take pictures.

You are invited to join our Wednesday morning Bible Study class. We meet in rooms 214-216 from 10:30-11:30 each Wednesday.
Our format is simple. We use the Scripture selection(s)
from the previous Sunday for our lesson, beginning and ending with prayer. We welcome anyone who would like to join with us,
whether or not you are able to attend every week, less frequently, or just whenever you can be with us. We look forward to seeing you.

SPRING TWILIGHT The flaming sun now goes to rest To set behind the trees, She flings her banners in the West, And stirs a gentle breeze. The glowing daylight slowly fades To cool the colors down, And hangs her curtained twilight shades Through meadow, field, and town. The air is warm and gentle still And bathed with orchid light, With lavender glow the word is filled Before the coming night. The lilac-scented air is sweet With spring's light fragrance fair, O come this twilight world to greet Beneath the fresh spring air. from SYMPHONY OF GRACE, copyright 2012 by Joyce Keedy (poem written in 1986)
The most colorful sunsets take place in autumn, and sometimes winter. Spring's sunsets seem more gentle. Spring twilights, though, are special! The air seems to take on an almost soft, lavender glow.

MAY’S COMMUNION/MISSION OFFERING Children’s Penny/Coin Collection continues
Saving Change to Make Change Imagine No Malaria
The coins in the jar have been counted. The children have collected $1,549.00 as of March 2015. WOW! Let’s begin filling the empty 3rd floor jar. Save those pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. Thank you for your support!
May 3, and throughout the month of May, we are collecting more than coins for IMAGINE NO MALARIA, the May Mission Offering. Make your checks payable to ‘Towson UMC,’ note on the check that it is for ‘Imagine No Malaria’ and let’s help that total grow! Thank you!
Wesley Choral Festival
to Benefit Imagine No Malaria Set for May
Save the date for the 2015 Wesley Choral Festival when choirs and individual choral singers participate in a four-day event in Washington, D.C., that culminates with a gala concert to benefit Imagine No Malaria. The 2015 Wesley Festival will be held May 21-24, 2015, in Washington, D.C.; the gala concert will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 23, at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. Tickets are on sale.
Approximately 250 singers from across the nation
are set to perform at the May 23 concert. One hundred percent of ticket proceeds from the concert will be donated to Imagine No Malaria, an initiative by The United Methodist Church to reduce preventable deaths from malaria.
“Though malaria is treatable and preventable, it is surprising to learn that more than 600,000 people die each year from the disease,” Ramsey says. “Because of The United Methodist Church’s Imagine No Malaria initiative, lives are being saved and communities are being transformed through bed net distributions, health worker education and life-saving medications and diagnostic kits. Imagine No Malaria’s impact is being seen all across Sub-Saharan Africa and we are honored to help support the work through the Wesley Choral Festival.”
Individuals may participate in the Wesley Festival in various ways: by joining the choir, purchasing tickets to the gala concert, or by attending as Wesley Festival pilgrims, non-performance participants who take part in four days of activities, including tours of Washington.

Towson United Methodist Church is a community of Christ-followers growing in love of God and
neighbor. This is what we at Towson UMC believe Christian discipleship is, what we are to be, and
what Jesus meant when he sent his followers to “make disciples”—
We believe every person is of sacred worth and created in God’s image. We commit to Jesus’
example of inclusive love, care, and intentional hospitality with persons of every race, ethnicity,
age, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, faith story, physical or mental ability,
economic status, or political perspective. We respect our diversity of opinion and expressions of
faith. Therefore, as God loves us, so let us love and serve in the name of Christ.
