CragsideRothbury, Morpeth, Northumberland NE65 7PX

Trip the light fantastic to the home where modern living began. Cragside was the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity, making it a wonder of the Victorian age. What started as a modest country retreat for engineer and inventor William Armstrong and his wife Margaret became the most technologically advanced house of its time with every home comfort imaginable, as well as being an Arts and Crafts masterpiece. Outside, Lord and Lady Armstrong were equally ambitious with the garden and grounds, engineering the landscape and experimenting with plants on a massive scale. Rocky crags, tumbling water, open lakes, towering North American conifers and great drifts of rhododendrons create changing scenery. Note: challenging terrain and distances outside, stout footwear essential.

Garden best in: April–October.

Lindisfarne CastleHoly Island, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland TD15 2SH

Lindisfarne Castle, one of the UK’s most iconic castles, presides over Holy Island, reached by a tidal causeway. Once a Tudor fort, it was converted into a holiday home for Country Life editor Edward Hudson by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1903. A year on from a major conservation project, you can experience the castle through a new exhibition. Without furniture, the stripped-back spaces are atmospheric and revealing, and there’ll be new things to discover throughout the season. Beyond the castle, you can explore the summer-flowering Gertrude Jekyll walled garden and Victorian lime kilns, and visit the National Trust shop. Note: unfurnished rooms. Limited toilet facilities. Island accessed by tidal causeway – check safe crossing times. Property situated on very steep slope, with steps and low doorways.

Ormesby HallLadgate Lane, Ormesby, near Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland TS3 0SR

Sitting in a calm green lung in urban Middlesbrough, this Georgian house is full of stories that are far from peaceful. The Pennyman family home tells tales of divorce, bankruptcy, love, revolutionary theatre, military service and royal connections from the past 300 years, up to the last owners, traditional Jim and socialist Ruth. Together they opened their doors to war refugees, artists, a prime minister and the local community. The formal and spring gardens offer an escape among the seasonal flowers, such as daffodils and tulips. The acres of parkland are great for exploring and spotting wildlife along the way.

Seaton Delaval HallThe Avenue, Seaton Sluice, Northumberland NE26 4QR

Dramatic Seaton Delaval Hall was designed by Sir John Vanbrugh (Castle Howard, Blenheim Palace) and home to the flamboyant Delaval family. In an age famous for extremes of behaviour, they were the most notorious of all Georgian partygoers and pranksters. The Central Hall bears the scars of fierce fires, which almost condemned it to ruin 200 years ago. This year we’ll be turning the place upside down in true Delaval style when we start a major project. It won’t be an ordinary visit; we’ll stay open so that you can see the conservation work as it happens. Treasurer’s House, YorkMinster Yard, York, North Yorkshire YO1 7JL

Tucked behind York Minster, Treasurer’s House is not as it first appears. In 1897 it was bought by Frank Green, the grandson of a wealthy industrialist, and by 1900 he had transformed it at great speed into an elaborately decorated town house, ready for the visit of Edward VII. Hear about Frank’s life and find out how he saved Treasurer’s House and changed it from a ramshackle collection of buildings into the grand show home we see today.
