The YMCA Philosophy of Youth Sports:

YMCA youth sport programs are not like other sport programs. We have a mission, and that mission is stated in our Seven Pillars of YMCA Youth Super Sports.

Pillar One - Everyone Plays. We do not use tryouts to select the best players, nor do we cut kids from the team. Everyone who registers is assigned to a team. During the season everyone receives equal practice time and plays at least half of every game.

Pillar Two - Safety First. Although kids may get hurt playing sports, we do all we can to prevent injuries. We’ve modified each sport to make it safer and more enjoyable to play. Coaches make sure the equipment and facilities are safe, and they teach the sport as we’ve prescribed so that the skills taught are appropriate for athletes’ development levels. Coaches constantly supervise their players and stop any unsafe activities.

Pillar Three - Fair Play. Fair play is about playing by the rules - and more. It’s about coaches and players showing respect for all involved in YMCA youth sports. It’s about coaches being role models of good sporting behavior and guiding their players to do the same.

Pillar Four - Positive Competition. We believe competition is a positive process when the pursuit of victory is kept in the right perspective. The right perspective is when adults make decisions that put the best interests of the players before winning the contest. Learning to compete is important for youngsters, and learning to cooperate in a competitive world is an essential lesson of life. We want to help kids learn these lessons through YMCA sports.

Pillar Five - Family Involvement. YMCA youth sports encourage parents to be involved appropriately in their child’s participation in our sports programs. In addition to parents being helpful as volunteer coaches, officials, and timekeepers, we encourage them to be at practices and games to support their child’s participation.

Pillar Six - Sport of All. YMCA Youth Super Sports is an “inclusive” sports program. We offer programs to all youngsters regardless of their race, gender, religious creed, or ability. We ask our adult leaders to encourage and appreciate the diversity of children in our society and encourage the kids and their parents to do the same.

Pillar Seven – Sport for Fun. Sports are naturally fun for most kids. Sometimes when adults become involved in children’s sporting activities they over-organize and dominate the activities to the point that it destroys kids’ enjoyment of them. If we take the fun out of sports for young athletes, we are in danger of the young athletes taking themselves out of sports. The sports are for the kids to have fun!

YMCA CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

The YMCA believes that character development, focusing on the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility is an essential element of all its programs. Everyone who participates in any aspect of our sports programs (participant, spectator, coach, official, or staff) is expected to adhere to these core values. Coaches are strongly encouraged to work with children in developing these character traits. Please use team huddles, water breaks and other moments to review these values with your players.

Caring To love others and be sensitive to the well being of others involved in the sports program. Caring is not only reflected in words, but actions as well. Would your

players consider you a caring coach? Do you use kind words to express your pleasure and displeasure to others? Are you courteous and sympathetic towards your fellow coaches, officials, participants, spectators and parents?

Honesty To have integrity, making sure that one’s actions match one’s values through participation in sports. Can

you consider all the facts and then render a final, fair ruling? Are you honest in your dealings with the players and their abilities? Do you play every player equally and give everyone a chance to succeed and learn from others? Can you play by the league rules and not bend them to create an advantage?

Respect To value the worth of every person, including oneself, one’s teammates, opponents, and officials. Do

you show respect to the officials and split second decisions, even if the decision might be

different than your own? Do you show honor, courtesy and respect to everyone in your daily life?

Responsibility To be accountable for one’s behavior and obligations. Are you responsible in attending practices

and games and show up prepared? Do you act as role model for your child and expect them to act as you do? A responsible parent loves, nurtures, disciplines, and guides a child.

YMCA BASKETBALLWe build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities.

Frankfort YMCAInstructional Basketball League

Rules: Bitty Basketball and 5-6 LeaguesThe YMCA believes in its philosophy of “athletes first, winning second.” Our youth sports program is designed for all participants to grow in the areas of sportsmanship and physical

fitness, as well as self-control, team effort, and skill development.

Players, Coaches, Referees:Teams will consist of five players on the court at all times (Bitty Basketball may be adjusted to fewer than 5 players). In following the YMCA Youth Sports Philosophy of “Everyone Plays,” all team members are to have an equal amount of playing time.

*Each player is required to recite the Sports Creed before the game and shake hands of the opposing team after the game.*

ANYONE WHO IS NOT REGISTERED IN THE LEAGUE IS NOT ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN PRACTICES OR GAMES!

Coaches are expected not only to balance playing time, but also to involve all players in the offense; every player should get a chance to dribble and shoot in every game. A player should not sit out for two consecutive quarters. Your goal as a coach should be for every player to score a basket during the season. This should be your measure of success, not your win/loss record.

Referees are an extension of the coach and will be instructing and encouraging players as well as calling fouls and rules violations.

Games and Practices:Each game will consist of (4) five minute quarters for Bitty Basketball and (4) 8 minute quarters for the 5-6 league. The clock will run continuously. It will be stopped for official time outs and injuries. Score will not be kept.

Half time:Halftime consists of five minutes. There will be a five to ten minute warm-up period in between games.

Time-outs: All teams will receive two 45-second time-outs per half. Time-outs do not carry over.

Defense: Defense will start after half court (no full court press allowed) and will consist of man to man defense. Players will be given colored wrist bands to denote match-ups. Help defense and switching are not allowed with the exception of fast breaks. There are to be no double teams regardless of a players position on the floor.

Violations:Traveling violations in Bitty Basketball and the 5-6 year old league will be called sparingly. In both leagues travels will be called if a player continually ignores attempting to dribble the basketball at all.

Match-ups:At the beginning of each quarter the players will match up with wrist bands. Coaches will do their best with the help of the officials to match them with children with like ability. Match- ups may only change in the middle of the quarter IF agreed upon by officials as well as both coaches.

Basketball Size:A mini basketball is used for Bitty Basketball. A junior size (27.5”) basketball is used for the 5-6 league.

Conduct: Team coaches are responsible for the conduct of themselves and for their players. The YMCA strives to create a positive learning experience for all participants. Coaches should always encourage and NEVER discourage. BE POSITIVE and stay away from negative comments/remarks.

Sportsmanship: Sportsmanlike behavior is expected from all coaches, players and spectators at all times. If a coach or player is asked to stop his/her unsportsmanlike conduct and he/she fails to comply; a technical will be called. Examples of this include but are not limited to: intimidating officials, players and/or coaches; arguing; taunting; swearing; pushing and fighting. If a spectator continues to be unsportsmanlike, he/she may be asked to leave.

Technical:Referees may use warnings instead of technical fouls at their discretion for any technical foul situations. Technical’s will be issued for unsportsmanlike conduct; especially those individuals who seek to take advantage of league rules. Referees may use their judgment in applying the rules for any situation not covered in the league rules.
