• Joint MOPIC-IFPRI-GIZ-CGIAR-PIM initiative to support the Food Security Secretariat

• Spatial data collection and repository • Monitor changes in food security goals

– Calorie deficiency– Child malnutrition– Other indicators

• Improve targeting of food security policies, projects and other interventions

• Benchmark for future data collection

Background and Objectives of Yemen Spatial

Page 3: Yemen Spatial: Food Security Mapping and Monitoring Tool

Monitoring tool and open data repository for tracking food security outcomes in Yemen

Built on technology used for Arab Spatial

Policy and planning tool, displaying patterns based on research

What is Yemen Spatial?

Based on a comprehensive conceptual framework for food security and development

Page 4: Yemen Spatial: Food Security Mapping and Monitoring Tool

• More Yemen-specific, for example:– Indicators in Yemeni Rial and units– Emphasis on indicators with higher relevance to

National Food Security Strategy (e.g. calorie deficiency and child stunting)

• Greater amount of data – Less emphasis on cross-country comparability

allows to include more data– Higher loading speed allows to include more data

• Yemen can have ownership over the tool (e.g. add, update content)

Yemen Spatial, compared to it’s “mother” Arab Spatial is:

Structure of the examples

Page 8: Yemen Spatial: Food Security Mapping and Monitoring Tool

Action Point #1 Reform petroleum subsidies

Budgetary savings should be invested in infrastructure related to utilities, transport, trade, and construction.

Action Point #2 Improve business climate

Linking investments to non-hydrocarbon sectors of the economy creates more jobs, and employs more food-insecure people

Action Point #3Reduce qat production and consumption

Sharply reducing qat consumption is vital for avoiding drought, and meeting food security goals.

Action Point #6 Target public investment and service provision

Key services to target include programs related to breastfeeding education, and child-growth monitoring.

2. Monitoring NFSS Goal #2: Reduction of child stunting at sub-national level over time

Yemen Spatial allows users to chart the spatial distribution of child malnutrition at the sub-national level, and target more specifically which areas of the country are most vulnerable, and expose disparities between governorates.

3. A Valuable Tool for Project Targeting: compare SFD project and food insecurity

Visualize whether interventions are situated in areas which are most vulnerable to food insecurity. Link to map: http://54.194.1.33/?id=YEM&ll=Health&ll=Food insecurity, District|2009&bm=World topographic

4. Other example: closing Yield Gaps

Display the spatial distribution of sorghum yields at the pixel level (expressed in kg/hectares), and visualize in detail which areas have the highest and lowest wheat yields across the country
