50 Hoops Its Beginnings hellipand Goals

As 50 Hoops National Prostate Cancer Awareness Basketball Tournaments and Health Fairs move into itrsquos fourth year we are reminded that statistics show minorities have a greater incidence of (and are diagnosed later for) prostate cancer They also show that minorities have a greater resistance to being screened for prostate and other cancers The singular success of 50 Hoops within the minority male community has been demonstrated during the past two years According to the American Foundation for Urologic Disease 50 Hoops is positioned as one of the major national programs for getting minority men to become health conscious and educated about prostate cancer and other male diseases for men aged 50 amp over

1998 50 Hoops began in Dallas TX with an

educational campaign supported by Dr Claus

Roehrborn Associate Professor Urology at The

University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center

and Chief of Urology at Dallas Veteran Affairs

Medical Center The University of Texas

Southwestern Medical Center and a handful of

national corporations Within a year 50 Hoops

prostate cancer within a sports environment

1999 50 Hoops expanded included Dallas and

Atlanta and added the prostate cancer awareness

HEALTH FAIR (offering PSA screening and rectal

examinations) Educational Exhibits and

workshops targeted to men 40 + and their families

prostate cancer and our open HOTLINE

2000 Expanding to Washington DC 50 Hoops approach to prostate cancer

awareness continues to magnetize physician-shy men to overcome their fear and

resistance to prostate cancer (and other cancer) screening Most importantly the

Community Seminars educate and reward participants for learning more

50 Hoops 2000 screened nearly 50 men many of whom had no personal

physician or health care provider In Washington DC screening hospitals

compared 50 Hoops to other competing events that same weekend whose

attendance exceeded 100000 The results 50 Hoops screened more than

TWICE AS MANY MEN

50 Hoops will continue to grow from city to city year to year as a unique and

effective campaign to get men -- especially underserved and African

American men--to become prostate aware

Southwestern Medical Center and a handful of

national corporations Within a year 50 Hoops

grew drawing and educating men 50+ about

prostate cancer within a sports environment

1999 50 Hoops expanded included Dallas and

Atlanta and added the prostate cancer awareness

HEALTH FAIR (offering PSA screening and rectal

examinations) Educational Exhibits and

workshops targeted to men 40 + and their families

Nearly 3 dozen minority men were screened for

prostate cancer and our open HOTLINE

continues to receive calls for prostate cancer

information This has provided 50 Hoops with a

prototype for growth

2000 Expanding to Washington DC 50 Hoops approach to prostate cancer

awareness continues to magnetize physician-shy men to overcome their fear and

resistance to prostate cancer (and other cancer) screening Most importantly the

Community Seminars educate and reward participants for learning more

50 Hoops 2000 screened nearly 50 men many of whom had no personal

physician or health care provider In Washington DC screening hospitals
