ABOUT THE ATLANTIC BK BOILER

Constant temperature requirements are achieved with boiler controller, shunt pump, 4-port valve and flow sensor.

Minimum flow and minimum temperature requirements are achieved with boiler controller, pump, 4-port valve and sensor.

Variable temperature requirements are achieved with boiler controller, shunt pump, 4-port valve, outside sensor and flow sensor. All the above systems can be provided by the boiler system. Alternatively, the BK boiler(s) can be enabled by a BMS system and also can provide alarm signals to a

BMS system. The boiler(s) will continue their own in-house operational control ensuring correct combustion and hydraulic function.

As a modulating burner option, the boiler controller system can be modified on a 0-5 volt and 0-10 volt band to give variable heat output.

condensing exchangerue gasoutlet

The lower part of the condensing exchanger has a condensate neutralising section built in, eliminating the need for separate equipment in the future. The pipework requirements are as straight forward as a conventional boiler or a high efficiency boiler. No special circuits are required to create condensing.

The boiler will condense to it’s maximum efficiency even at 82°C flow & 71°C return. For combustion air, at inlet temperatures below 30°C, efficiencies always exceed 95%. These conditions apply throughout the year in the UK.

The flue gases leave the first heat exchanger at temperatures below 90°C, and are then extracted from the second condensing heat exchanger at temperatures always below 50°C. The introduction of combustion air through the condensing exchanger lowers the flue gas temperature below dew-point, hence there is no need for return water temperature to be low.

The ATLANTIC BK year-round maximum condensing boiler has two distinct heat exchangers, the first of developed quality steel design and the second of high grade plastic design.

The boiler body made of high-performance steel with cylindrical reversal combustion chamber and five flue gas passes.

Due to the boiler’s construction, the flue gas is cooled down to about 60°C – 80°C already inside the boiler body where the it transfers the major part of its heat to the boiler water, before it enters the plastic heat exchanger.

Permanent condensation, completely independent from the return temperature occurs.

The boiler body stays dry due to the integrated return temperature lifting which means residues can be removed very easily. The integrated heat exchanger, in which the condensation takes place, is made of a special type of plastic and thus resistant against acid sulphur (sulphur dioxide + water). Therefore, sulphur-free heating oil is not necessary.

Furthermore, the heat transfer is exclusively done in a counterflow with air/flue gas. So there is no pollution nor blocking nor rusting through of the heat exchanger due to the heating water.

Due to the permanent condensation, the secondary heat exchanger practically cleans itself. The flue gas is washed out by the permanent condensation.

The environmentally harmful acid sulphur is neutralized in the neutralization box and is lead into the canalization, now pH-free. So, only “water steam” is emitted into the atmosphere, no sulphur dioxide. This is a very positive effect on the environment!

The integrated modulating flue gas fan adapts the combustion chamber pressure to the weather conditions. This gives constant combustion conditions, independent from draught or pressure in the chimney.

In September 2018, the next phase of the EU’s Energy-related Products Directive (ErP) came into effect.

New legislation will set maximum nitrogen oxides (NOx) emission levels that boilers will need to meet, reducing the overall NOx emissions produced from heating. For oil-fired boilers, the NOx emissions target will be a maximum of 120mg/kWh so all oil boilers placed on the market on or after 26th September will need to be compliant.

The stricter regulations will affect boilers which are up to 400kW in size, including oil-fired boilers, gas boilers and LPG boilers.

One of the main objectives of the new legislation is to help improve the air quality by reducing pollution.

WHAT IS THE ErP DIRECTIVE?

For super-condensing boilers using outside air for combustion air, the whole annual space heating energy (and any other energy requirement) will be met by a boiler efficiency of 99%GCV.

This is a saving of between one third and one half over conventional boilers and of one third or more over conventional condensing boilers. This type of condensing is termed deep condensing and with super condensing boiler it always takes place for all types of energy supply.

BALANCING VESSELS

CONDENSING FLUE ARRANGEMENT

BALANCING AND SEDIMENTATION VESSEL

The balancing vessel is located close to the boilers, with its feet placedon a base to allow the boiler flows and returns to normally vent to thevessel. One full size cold feed pipe should be taken to the connection’P’ on the vessel and fitted with a ‘normally open’ ball valve, allowingunrestricted heating system expansion and contraction to take placealong the pipe.

The different flow pipes of separate heating circuits should beconnected progressively down the header from the top flow 'A'. Thereturns should be connected similarly upwards from the bottom return'I'. DHW priority flow and return circuits should be taken from and tothe high level ‘W’ tappings.

When connections are complete and the system is ready for filling.Firstly everything should be isolated from the vessel. This includes theboilers (with their shunt pumps) connected to ‘L’ (flow) and ‘M’(return)and the heating circuits - 'A' and 'I'. - which should be isolated fromthe vessel. The vessel air vent ‘V’ and drain/sludge valve ‘D’ shouldbe closed.

The different heating circuits should then be filled separately. As thecircuits are progressively filled, they should be regularly sludgedthrough the bottom of the vessel by opening the circuit valves and the

drain and sludge valve until thewater clears. This should berepeated for all the circuits. Afterfilling all the circuits, the circuitpumps should be set running tocheck for further sedimentationarriving in the vessel. When this isclear, the boiler valves may beslowly opened and then the shuntpumps set running.

ATLANTIC BOILERS was formed in 1980 to promote highly efficient boilerplant and within twoyears had supplied the first commercial gas condensing boilers in the United Kingdom. For30 years, ATLANTIC BOILERS has supplied both gas and oil condensing boilers to manyUniversities, Hotels, Hospitals, Medical and Social Care Buildings, Leisure Centres, Schools,Offices and Housing Developments plus many other types of buildings. ATLANTIC BOILERSalso supplies condensing and highly efficient domestic hot water generation, based onstainless steel manufacture.

Coupled with the supply, ATLANTIC BOILERS provides back-up commissioning, spares andservicing by way of a network of merchants throughout the United Kingdom.

The BK boilers can have either conventional or balance flues for diesel, oil, kerosene, natural gas or LPG. The boilers flue requirements are economic - often cutting the costs of material and labour when compared to other boilers. As the flue gas exit temperature is always low, the volume of gases is always greatly reduced throughout the year.

In addition, the BK Series boilers have a variable speed flue gas extract fans which permit extensive vertical and horizontal flue ducts in carefully chosen TECHNAFLON condensing flues. The flues are greaded to the boiler(s) to allow the condensate to drain to the tank in the base of each boiler. The condensate is then treated using limestone marbles before flowing out to a normal drain.
