Advent is the season four weeks before Christmas in

which we prepare for the coming of Christ. It begins on

the Sunday nearest to the 30th of November, until the

24th of December. Advent, from the Latin word

adventus, is the time that reminds us to be prepared for

the coming of Christ in Glory.

The season celebrates Christ's anticipated coming

again in the fullness of time to rule triumphantly over life

in heaven and earth, as well as the coming of Christ as

the infant Savior whose birth we celebrate during

Christmas. And because the season emphasizes

Christ's coming and not just his birth, it’s more than just

a time to get ready for Christmas. Advent reminds us

that the question is not whether Jesus will return to

judge the earth; but when.

The season of Advent came into being toward the

middle of the sixth century. At first, the Advent Season

was determined as the six Sundays leading up to

Christmas. This was then reduced to four Sundays by

Pope St. Gregory the Great (591-604).

Before the seventh century, Christmas was a secondary

feast, especially in Rome, but as it came to take on

more and more importance, so did the season of

Advent. Advent became more solemn and its

orientation changed. From just being a time to prepare

for Christmas, it became a time to look to the glorious

return of the Lord and now Advent reflects this double

perspective of waiting for the Second Coming of Jesus:

the first segment from the first Sunday of Advent to

Dec. 16th, and the preparation for the celebration of the

first coming of the Savior at His birth, from Dec. 17th to

Dec. 24th.

The Roman Catholic Church summarizes Advent by

saying, "When the Church celebrates the liturgy of

Advent each year, she makes present the ancient

expectancy of the Messiah, by sharing in the long

preparation for the Savior's First Coming, the faithful

renew their ardent desire for His Second Coming."

God’s first intervention within our history came not in

the form of some instant or earth shattering event, but

instead God chose to come into the world as we all do,

to be born as a baby in the midst of a chaotic world. By

our own impatient standards this seems to be such a

slow way to bring salvation to the world. But God may

not always choose the easy answer or the quick fix. But

by His earthly incarnation He demonstrates a total

commitment to the very core of humanity. A

commitment, to its day by day routines and challenges,

a commitment to humanity from the cradle to the grave

and beyond. And in that same incarnational way, God

comes to us day by day, through the working of the

Spirit, through His Word and Sacrament, making the

ordinary extraordinary; making the broken whole; and

redeeming and restoring the past, present and future,

whatever they hold.

This is a message which is clear in the Gospel. History,

myth, belief and imagery come together to create a

vision, the strength of which is not in trying to

understand the detail of Christ’s Second Coming but in

catching a glimpse of the message of salvation and

healing, being completed. We should not spend our

time worrying about the timing of God’s arrival or about

the distraction of what might happen in the meantime.

God’s reign has already broken into our world through

the incarnation, death and resurrection of Christ. His

Kingdom is near and it is coming, even as it is already

arrived but not fully realized. We are to remain watchful,

and aware, and to be prepared for the Final Coming,

which is likely to arrive at any time.

God’s love is shared with uncommon grace in a world

so desperately in need of that love. It is through us, and

through the very imperfect Church that bears His name

that His love and grace continue to come and spread,

during Advent and through the Christian year, as we

look to His coming in glory.

There is much about Advent to enjoy, the Advent

wreaths found in our churches where they have four

candles to be lit each Sunday and one for Christmas

Day. But in the midst of our church we know that just as

we prepare for Christmas, so we have to make ready to

welcome Jesus in our lives. Are you ready for the

Coming of Jesus?

Dear Brothers and Sisters in

Christ, Greetings! May the upcoming

seasons of Advent and Christmas be

filled with all the graces of peace, hope,

and joy they promise!

GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY!

A year ago, in this Newsletter, we informed the parish

community of our great joy at the ongoing process to

build the parish temple. At that time, we were at the

verge of choosing an architect to begin the process of

the design of the building. A lot has happened since

then! Right now we are getting ready for the

groundbreaking ceremony and I hope this newsletter

arrives at your home in time for you to make plans to

attend.

The ground breaking ceremony is on the 26th of

November beginning with the 10:00 am mass

presided by Bishop John Noonan, and then the actual

ceremony at the grounds immediately following the

mass. According to the General Contractor it will take

around 10 to 11 months to complete. We have included

a center fold article on the process, the design and the

opportunities to donate liturgical items in memory of a

loved one or in honor of the family donating. If you have

any questions after reading the article, please do not

hesitate to contact us at the parish office.

CATHOLICS ALL THE TIME!

This year, I began inviting all St Catherine of Siena

parishioners “to be Catholic” also in December! What I

mean, is that many Catholics, have adopted the

customs of the world to decorate their house and

offices for Christmas with all the traditional decorations

possible, beginning on Thanksgiving Day; as this has

become known as the “official start of the Christmas

Season”, in this country. In the meantime, our

wonderful and powerful season of Advent is forgotten

and only celebrated when coming to mass. We have

known for decades now that our faith is not just for

Sundays! We are, in fact, Catholic all the time! And so

we must be Catholics at home as well and celebrate

the liturgical seasons with prayers and meals and

gatherings that reflect our faith.

For instance, the color for Advent is purple, and the

liturgy calls for staid decorations, even the liturgies call

for more silences and solemnity. The decorations in

our homes should reflect the spirit of Advent as well:

use a purple table cloth for the dining room, setting the

blessed advent wreath as a center piece either in the

dining room or in the living room. Following every day

the prayers for the advent wreath, can help us continue

the celebration of Sundays through the week so that

we can more deeply appropriate the lessons of the

season and more readily accept their invitation to a life

style that is always longing and waiting for the Lord

Jesus.

By restraining from decorating and celebrating

Christmas until Christmas day, we will be able to enjoy

more joyously not only Christmas day, but the entire

Christmas season that our faith gives us. But more

importantly, by celebrating each season properly at

home, we can appreciate the wonderful treasure we

have in our faith and receive the graces the celebration

of the seasons promise. So, the invitation is on! Let us

be Catholics all the time!

BEGINNING OF YEAR OF THE EUCHARIST

As we begin the season of Advent, we begin

the Jubilee celebration of the 50th anniversary of our

Diocese of Orlando. Bishop, John Noonan has

declared this, in fact, a Jubilee Year for us with the

theme: “Stay with us, Lord” based on Luke 24:13-35

describing the Road to Emmaus when disciples urged

our Lord, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the

day is almost over. So he went in to stay with

them. And it happened that, while he was with them at

table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and

gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and

they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight.”

Because the Eucharist is the source and summit of

Catholic life which unifies and sustains the community

of faith, it is right and proper for the Bishop to establish

a Jubilee Year of the Eucharist, to enkindle a deeper

faith, to form leaders in Christ, and to harmonize

ministries in the mission of the Church concurrent with

this golden anniversary.

Each parish was invited by Bishop Noonan to plan

events to highlight the Holy Eucharist and the theme of

the Jubilee. At St. Catherine of Siena we have

prepared a complete calendar of activities to help us

deepen our knowledge and understanding of the Holy

Eucharist and to rekindle in all of us the love and

devotion to this most wonderful sacrament. (See the

insert) I do hope that this Jubilee Year becomes an

opportunity of growth for all of us.

STEWARDSHIP

To embody the stewardship way of life continues to be

a priority for us here at St. Catherine of Siena. This

year’s campaign was successful in many ways.

Allowing us to celebrate who we are, a community,

desiring not only to deepen our knowledge of Jesus,

but willing to follow Him by obeying His teachings and

accepting His invitation to holiness. This universal call

to perfection comes to us centered in the reality of

service. Service as the most perfect way to manifest

love for one another, as a way to manifest our love for

God.

We have come to understand that donating our Time,

Talent and Treasure to the parish to build and manifest

God’s Kingdom in our midst is a calling that comes to

us as a responsibility. In baptism we were given the

mission to live out the faith, to maintain the Christian

dignity unstained, and to pass on the faith to others in

love. By belonging to a parish, by participating actively

in the ministry of the parish and by contributing with our

financial support, we fulfill this mission together.

Thus, we are very happy with our Stewardship

Campaign through which we are able to receive the

commitment of our parishioners to contribute with their

Time, Talent, and Treasure so that our parish may

continue to be a vibrant parish filled with faith and

service.

This year 446 families made their commitment of time,

256 families made their commitment of Talent and 349

families made their commitment of Treasure. These

numbers are much lower than those of last year so, I

encourage those who have not made a commitment to

please do so and join us in building the Kingdom of

God in our Midst. Let us heed the invitation of Christ to

serve one another following His example.

OUR CATHOLIC APPEAL OCA

I am very grateful to all the parishioners who made their

commitment to Our Catholic Appeal this year, and also

at the same time I’m very proud of the parish. This year

we met our goal and actually surpass it. It is very

important for our parish, especially now that we enter

in to the period of the actual construction of temple to

meet our financial responsibilities. Together with those

contributing for the operating expenses and building

fund, we offer a monthly mass for them, for intentions

and needs, and of course I keep you all in my daily

prayers as well. (See the financial report)

NEW PARISH MUSIC COORDINATOR

To continue to improve our liturgies and better support

our music ministry, we have hired Mr. Jose Colón as

our Parish Music Minister. ( See the article).

NEW MINISTRIES

This year we have two new ministries and one that is

being rekindled. To better serve our parents in the

Faith Formation Program we have created a team of

Adult Catechists; then for better safety and security in

the parish the Parish Safety Group was also created.

Finally, with the brothers and sisters of the parish who

have attended the Emmaus retreat and are willing to

work hard to bring to our parish, we are now working

our first men and women retreat for the spring of next

year. The Emmaus information is only in Spanish

because the retreat right now is offered only in

Spanish but the English translation is now in progress .

(Please read the corresponding articles of each of

these ministries.)

EVANGELIZATION TOOLS

Last year we began using two great communication

and evangelization tools in our parish: “FORMED.org”, a website where you can find great Catholic teachings

and entertainment; and “myParish” app, which helps

the parish keep parishioners informed on events and

happenings at the parish. I continue to encourage

everyone to take advantage of these great tools of

evangelization. You can read more about these

formation and evangelization tools in this newsletter. I

personally invite and encourage all of you to take

advantage of these resources in your home to learn or

deepen your knowledge of the faith, to share the Good

News with family members and friends and to stay

always connected to the parish.

As we begin this Diocesan Jubilee Year of the

Eucharist, let us grow closer to this wonderful

sacrament so that through it we continue to grow in

holiness. Once again, may the Lord grant you a

blessed season of Advent and Christmas season and

a New Year filled with His blessings.

Your Servant In Christ, Fr Jose Bautista, JCL Pastor

Adult Catechists Ministry Many times at St. Catherine of Siena and

especially within the faith formation program, we

find ourselves wondering how we can reach more of

our parishioners. It was with this thought that the

faith formation program decided to expand our view

of catechizing the children and focus heavily on the

parents and caregivers that bring them to class.

With the help of Nereida Pagan, we

comprised a team of catechist with its only focus on

adult catechism. This team made up of Nereida

Pagan, Guido Eugster, Alejandro Carlos, Rafael

Figueroa, Wilfred Tilus and Carmen Munoz

alternate every Wednesday to provide a continuing

spiritual growth for the all faith formation parents

and all parishioners as well. Wednesday’s faith

formation classes are not solely set aside for

parents and children of the program, but all wanting

to hear the Word of God come alive, are welcomed.

The United States Catholic Conference of

Bishops authored a pastoral plan in 1999. This adult

faith formation plan entitled “Our Hearts Were

Burning within Us”, made a clear and new priority

for all future adult catechesis.

We are called to

grow in discipleship

throughout life and to build

vibrant parish and diocesan

communities of faith and

service. As the Bishops

stated in the pastoral plan,

“we seek to form adults

who actively cultivate a lively baptismal and

Eucharistic spirituality with a powerful sense of

mission and apostolate. Nourished by word,

sacrament and communal life, they will witness and

share the Gospel in their homes, neighborhoods,

places of work, and centers of culture.”

When asked about the importance of this

new ministry and what it means to our parish,

Nereida Pagan simply replied, “that knowing more of

God makes us connect more to him and in turn

helps us to be more God-Like which is something we

all should strive to become.” Guido, another member

of the team echoes the sentiment by saying, “the

more I know about my Catholic Faith, the closer I

feel to Jesus and to God, and it becomes a joy to

share this with others. I see this as a service to the

community and as a way to show my love to God.”

The office of faith formation here at St.

Catherine’s strives to foster a parish environment

that aids the believer to flourish and to continuously

be challenged to grow in the faith. Adult faith

formation not only nourishes our spiritual way of life,

it also enables us to live a disciple’s way of life in

which we can guide our children to a better Christian

living. This new ministry of adult faith formation takes

their tasks seriously as it is through discipleship that

we introduce others to Christ.

Currently, the team is looking to expand their

members. Like all ministries, if you feel the calling

tugging away in your soul and you have been

ignoring God’s calling in your heart do not hesitate to

contact the faith formation department at our parish

office. You might be the person responsible for

leading lost sheep back home to our Lord. Call

Cristy Smith at our parish office at 407-344-9607.

emergency situations that may occurred. The Safety

Ministry Group will be an asset to St. Catherine of

Siena. Hopefully you can consider to give your time

and talent to this new group.

Here at St. Catherine of Siena we are proud to

welcome our new parish safety group. This group is

also known as Seliah (which is Aramaic for Apostles.)

This team is comprised of 12 men and 1 female. The

purpose of this group is to equip and support the

church, Pastor, and its parishioners with any

assistance needed in order to achieve the Parish

mission.

This ministry was started by Simon De la Cruz

and Cristy Smith after seeing the need the community

had during last year’s First Communion celebration in

which many parishioners attended. Since then the

group has been hard at work planning and assisting

other ministries for their special events. Among

providing parking lot assistance, the group is also

responsible for parish wide hurricane preparation in

the event of a storm in our area.

Currently, there are 9 members in the group

and we are currently in search of 4 more men. If you

feel the calling in your heart to serve St. Catherine’s

parishioners and all ministries please reach out to

Cristy Smith at the parish office. Current members

include Elvis Estevez, Simon De la Cruz, Carlos

Febres, Felipe Guilfu, Juan Maldonado, Edwin

Montero, Jose Salazar, Charles Smith and Cristy

Smith.

When the group was asked what blessings do

they receive by participating in this ministry, it was a

unanimous consensus. They all want to give to the

community and leave things better then what they

found it.

So if you see any of them in the crowd or in

their bright orange vest in the parking lot, remember

they are there to help us. Whether it’s helping the

elderly get out of the car during mass drop-off or

asking people not to take pictures during the First

Communion celebration, the safety group was formed

to serve our community.

The entire group is dedicate to their mission

statement which reads as follows. “We freely walk as

sheep into the midst of wolves using wisdom, love,

patience, strength and understanding as we serve,

protect and lead God’s people into his Kingdom.”

In these pictures you can see how the team

under went training in a CPR course. They will now

carry their CPR License and will be ready for

The Parish Safety Group

Members of the team at the First Response Class as part

of their training.

José Javier Colón is our new

parish music coordinator. He

tells us: “I’ve Study music at

the Interamerican University

of Puerto Rico metropolitan

area and the University of

Puerto Rico in Carolina. I

have been singing in church

since the age of 12 and

directing choirs since the age

of 18. I was part of the 8:00

am Choir here at St. Catherine of Siena for a period

of 2 years, and also directed the Hispanic Choir at

Blessed Sacrament Church in Clermont, FL.”

As a part of our commitment to the parish the Music

department is working on expanding our services to

the community, in the near future we will be offering

piano and guitar lessons. In addition, we plan to

expand to percussion and organ as well. We are in

the works of starting a kids choir and youth choir, any

help is appreciated.

José is open to new ideas, that will help the parish

music department to flourish. He can be found in the

parish office, or in the music room on weekdays. He

is looking forward to meeting each and every ministry

and help in anyway he can. If you are interested in

joining one of the choirs, please call him at the parish

office at 407-344-9607 for your interview. Or via e-

mail at: [email protected] .

Since June, 2016, St. Catherine of Siena has been

given the green light by the Diocese of Orlando to pro-

ceed with the design of our new temple. With this ap-

proval comes planning and a lengthy implementaon pro-

cess. Since June 27, 2016, we started the journey of

building our temple which includes hiring an Owner’s rep-

resentave (This took place on August 30, 2016) hiring the

architect in charge of designing the building (This took

place on November 17, 2016) and finally hiring the con-

strucon company or General Contractor in charge of the

actual construcon of the project (This took place on Au-

gust 14th

of this year) .

An Owner’s representave is typically a 3rd party

(individual or company) that is hired by the Owner (St.

Catherine of Siena Catholic Church) to represent us during

site selecon and design and construcon phases. A9er

interviewing various candidates, the commi:ee chose

Mark Rieker of Rieker and Associates Inc. Mark came

highly recommended because he has built various Catho-

lic Churches for the Diocese of Orlando, including, St.

Theresa Catholic Church, in Ocoee, and currently Saint

John the Evangelist, in Viera. Once hired he started work-

ing with the construcon commi:ee to hire an architect.

The Dioceses of Orlando compiled a list of ap-

proved architects that have a history of building churches

and a knowledge of liturgically accurate floorplans. The

request was sent to various firms and each architect was

rigorously interviewed for hours in order to make the

right decision for our project. With the help of Mark Riek-

er the Construcon Commi:ee selected Plunke: Raysich,

who immediately began to work on designing the new

building keeping always in mind our budget of 3 million

dollars. On December 6th

, 2016, the construcon com-

mi:ee unanimously voted to move forward with one of

Page 8: YEAR OF THE EUCHARISTstcatherineofsienacc.org/wp-content/uploads/Advent-English.pdf · The Roman Catholic Church summarizes Advent by ... groundbreaking ceremony and I hope this newsletter

8

the floorplan opons given by the architect. On February

16th

thru March 15th

of 2017, the Construcon Commi:ee

completed the preliminary pricing. The design and render-

ings were finalized shortly a9er, on May 24th

of 2017. The

applicaon for the final engineering and site plan approval

was finalized on August 2, 2017, leading the county to ap-

prove our project and site plan on September 13, 2017.

For the hiring of the General Contractor we fol-

lowed similar procedures and a9er interviewing three con-

strucon companies we selected Henkelman Construcon,

which gave us the total cost for our design. With the com-

pleon of the church’s design within budget, the Diocesan

Finance Commi:ee approved the loan on October 11,

2017. This brings us to the present as we are preparing the

groundbreaking ceremony to take place the 26th of No-

vember beginning with the 10:00 am mass presided by

Bishop Noonan. Currently, we are in the building permit

process and the actual construcon will begin in December

of 2017.

Since St. Catherine of Siena was established in

1994, the parishioners have raised money, first to build

the mulpurpose building, our social hall, and then to

build the temple. A9er paying off the construcon loan

for the social hall, which we currently use as the temple,

St. Catherine of Siena began to raise funds to build the

temple. With the funds we’ve collected all these years, we

were able to expand the current building, and complete

the site work. The site work is part of any construcon

project, we paid for ours without incurring any debt which

allows us now to use the rest of the funds, a li:le over 1.5

million for the new temple. The total cost of the project is

3 million dollars. The Diocese however, will lend us the

other $1.5 million. With current material prices being high-

er than ever, we realize this amount unfortunately, is not

enough to build our temple that would fit this ever grow-

ing community. Therefore the Construcon Commi:ee

decided to design and construct the biggest building we

could for the three million dollars. We understood that

there would be some choices we had to make if we fol-

lowed this decision.

Choice number one that we made, was to build

the temple now, knowing that it would be as big as the

growing parish will need in the future; choice number

two, was to design a building that is easily expandable, so

our design provides for easy expansion to a total of 1200

seats in the future, for now, we will accommodate just a

li:le over 700. Choice number three was to not include

the adoraon chapel in this phase, however the design

provide for easy addion of the adoraon chapel in the

near future, when we can raise funds for it. Choice num-

ber four was to not include any furnishings, such as pews,

the crucifix, etc., but to take what we are using now and

use it in the new temple unl we can have the money to

buy them.

However, since we do not begin to pay the loan

unl a9er the building is completed, we have a year, and

the permission of the Diocese to raise funds during this

year to be able to buy as much as we can of the liturgical

furnishings and other items that we will need for the new

church. The Construcon Commi:ee has prepared a list

of such items, and is inving families, groups or individual

who wish to donate in memory of a loved one, or in hon-

or of the family to please do so. The list is included follow-

ing this arcle. Because some of the items have to be spe-

cial ordered, we need to have the funds within the next

four months, such items include the pews and the crucifix

and statutes. We are glad and at the same me thankful

to Annunciaon Parish, in Longwood, because as they
