In the September newsletter, we touched on the concept of Critical thinking and the types of
questions that can be used in class to promote critical thinking.
Here are some questions (that have nothing to do with Business Studies) that will make you look
like the “cool” teacher, while at the same time they will help your learners to think critically (and
therefore develop some great skills):
1 Two men play five games of chess. Each man wins the same number of games. There are
no ties. Answer: They were not playing each other
2 What is pronounced like a single letter, written with 3 letters, and most animals
have two of them? Eye
3 If there are eighty-five marbles and you take away 2, how many do you have? Two,
because you took two
4 What can overpower you completely, but not hurt you. Sleep
5 What is the next number in this sequence 7512, 7514, 7518, 7524, 7532, 7534? 7538
6 Ms Miller is turning 100 years old today. She has 24 grandchildren. If all of her
grandchildren bring her 6 roses each, how many roses will Ms Miller receive? 144
7 You have only one match. You walked into a room where there was an oil burner, a
kerosene lamp, and a coal burning stove. Which one would you light first? The match
8 There are two letters of the alphabet that mean zilch, zero, nothing? Which two are
they? MT (empty)
9 What is the furthest that a bear can run into the woods? Half way. After that he is running
out of the woods.
10 Your doctor gives you three pills. She tells you to take one every half hour. How long would
the pills last? One hour
11 Why do you always find something in the last place you look? Because when you find it,
you stop looking.

Now for some information on the
An overview of the South African Fast Food Industry (Source: Analytixbi – 2016)
Most international Fast Food chains are opening outlets in South Africa as they view it as a
gateway to the rest of African continent.
Although the South African Fast Food Market is robust and competitive it is not yet
overcrowded. Major players are making use of aggressive marketing strategies to grow
their market share.
The Fast Food industry accounts for 40% of total consumer food services in South Africa,
with Yum! Brands (KFC) being the biggest player in the market. Local companies such as
Famous Brand with its Steers and Wimpy brands are also very popular in South Africa.

Even though South Africans experiment with Western trends, they still remain loyal to local
brands and continue to support them despite an increase in international brands that
penetrate the African market.
In recent years, South Africa has seen the entry of commonly know US brands such as
Burger King, Dominoes and Pizza Hut. Additional brands such as Dunkin Donuts, Taco Bell
and Wendy’s have reportedly also been investigating the South African market as a
potential growth opportunity.
The South African market is also categorised by the informal street vendors that sell
traditional food at lower prices and attracts a larger number of consumers.
Fast food consumption patterns in South Africa indicate that the tradition of eating home
cooked meals is decreasing. As both household incomes, and standards of living rise, more
people are eating fast foods. Globalisation and westernisation of diets is also driving food
consumption patterns.
The food and beverage industry in South Africa comprises restaurants and coffee shops,
fast food outlets, and other catering service providers. In February 2015, the total value of
food and beverage sales by restaurants and coffee shops, fast food and take away outlets,
and by caterers was estimated to have increased by 6.6% year-on-year, which was higher
than January 2014’s 5.5% increase.
The largest percentage share (47%) of the total income in the food and beverages industry
was contributed by “Restaurants and Coffee Shops”, followed by “Fast Food Outlets” (R7.6
billion or 29%) and “Caterers and other Catering Services” (25%).
Of the 181 373 people employed in the food and beverage industry, in South Africa,
“Restaurants and Coffee Shops” employed the largest proportion (51%), followed by
“Caterers and Other Catering Services” (30%) and Fast Food Outlets (19%).

Starbucks Experiments With Curbside Coffee Pickup -
SARA RONCERO-MENENDEZ 6 OCTOBER 2016
The beverage company is testing a mobile ordering option in which
drinks are delivered directly to your car when you arrive
Starbucks has tried to make ordering coffee easier than ever, from
creating drive-thrus for customers on the go to creating an online
ordering system through their app. Now the coffeehouse is looking to
make it even simpler for customers in a hurry by providing curbside coffee pickup.
The program is only being tested at one Starbucks location in Snoqualmie, Washington. The store
has dedicated parking spots for those using the service, though the initial testing of the service has
been slow, with only one customer using it at a time. Locals have voiced their concerns about how
hectic the service will make the parking lot once it picks up in popularity and the potential dangers
of having so many cars vying for those few curbside spots.
Starbucks’ mobile ordering system has risen in popularity with an average of 10% of all orders
coming in through the app. If this is any indication of the curbside pickups future numbers, it might
just be faster to go into the store itself.

The Hottest Chip In The World Comes Packed In A
Coffin-Shaped Box - LAURA YAN - 30 SEPTEMBER 2016
R E
The individually wrapped snack is made from the spiciest
known chilli.
For spicy food addicts, the Carolina Reaper
Madness chip from tortilla chip company Paqui might just
be the ultimate snack. The spicy chip made from the
hottest pepper in the world (plus some bits of ghost and chipotle peppers), is individually packaged
in a red pouch, bearing the outline of the grim reaper.
As if that wasn’t enough, it’s also packaged in a coffin
shaped box. A single box/chip costs five dollars, which
seems steep until you remember that just one chip will be
plenty. Jeff Day, brand manager, told Mashable, “It’s the
hottest chip you’ll ever have.after you eat that one chip, trust me, you’re not looking to dig back
into the bag and have a second one.”

This Special Bun Brings Hot Dogs And Burgers
Together At Last - SARA RONCERO-MENENDEZ
7 OCTOBER 2016
The Hamdog has achieved internet fame for its bizarre
design and clever mashup
The age old question of hot dogs versus burgers may
depend on personal preference, but for those who
enjoy both, there’s a new bun that lets you have the best of both worlds: the Hamdog.
Australian inventor brought this combination hotdog and burger bun to the public two months ago,
and has achieved internet fame. Murray tells CNBC that the idea for the special bun came while
he was visiting the United States in 2004: “I had the idea on holiday when I was leaving a bar in
Nashville. I grabbed a burger and a hot dog as I was really hungry. I was sitting in the car eating
them both at the same time and my wife was looking at me like I was an idiot.” The product will be
coming to the United States sometime next year and, yes, Murray already has a patent on the
bun.
