Impact Report

Year End Legal and Tax Checklist

Can it be approaching the end of the year already? In addition to planning family gatherings and buying gifts, take the time to review tax and legal issues while there is still time.

o To start with, do you have an estate plan?

o Does it say what you want it to say?

o Are the people you have named as agents, executors, or trustees still up to the task?

o Do you have appropriate beneficiary designations on retirement plans and life insurance policies?

o Have you updated it after a marriage or divorce?

Charitable Gifts. People make gifts to charities because they want to benefit causes close to them. However, it makes sense to maximize the tax benefits of these gifts. These benefits depend on what you give and when, so a discussion with your accountant prior to year end can make sure you benefit the charities AND yourself to the maximum extent.

Individual Gifts. Individuals can give up to $14,000 to as many other people they want in a given year with no gift or estate tax consequences. If this is part of your planning, make sure you get these gifts completed well in advance of the clock striking midnight on New Year’s Eve.

Estate Plan. The end of the year is a good reminder to make sure your estate plan is up to date. Schedule a time with your attorney if your will needs updating.

Our Board of Trustees approved a 2020 strategic plan for CFSA, with an emphasis on better serving our donors and community through greater investment, inclusion, impact and infrastructure. The infographic on the right illustrates our key focus areas and goals.

We look forward to collaborating with all of our donors, affiliates, and programs and initiatives to achieve our vision. If you have any questions please give me a call.

3 CFSA has always been on my “short list” whenever a client has a charitable goal, but especially when the client is looking for a dynamic, collaborative effort with and from an entity that will shepherd the client’s charitable goals long after the client passes. I’ve seen CFSA make great strides, especially since Clint’s tenure, to become a proactive partner with its donors and it’s always great when I see a client, get excited and engaged in the community.
