Options Process

This options booklet will give you the guidance, support and opportunity to make decision on the subjects you

wish to take at Key Stage 4. We know this is a big decision and you will need guidance, but make sure you

consider the following:

How will my choices impact my future?

Is there any advice I should know?

Who should I contact to for more advice?

The Options process has been designed to:

Provide access to a variety of subjects to suit all interests.

Increase the chances of you achieving the best overall grades possible at the end of year 11.

Provide a wide range of opportunities for you to progress beyond year 11.

Making the Right Choice

Making the right decision is vitally important because the subjects you choose could influence your future career

possibilities.

Look at your strengths and weaknesses.

Choose subjects you enjoy and in which you have the ability to be successful. You will be studying this

subject for the next 2 years so it is important that you are interested in.

Do some research into the careers and courses that might interest you when you leave in Year 11. Find out

which subjects you might need and what grades you would need to achieve to do these courses.

DO NOT choose subjects because your friends are doing them or you think you will get a particular

teacher. There is no guarantee that you will be in the same group or with the same teacher as someone

else.

Research the course, USE THIS BOOKLET. To avoid making mistakes, make sure you review the course

outline of the course(s) you want to take. Have a look at the types of learning, assignments and

examination tasks involved.

And remember.... all subjects will be HARD WORK. There is no such thing as an 'easy' subject; it just

seems that way because you are interested in it or are good at it.

BTEC Technical Awards/First Awards

BTEC Technical Awards/First Awards are vocational qualifications and are recognised nationally by employers and colleges as an alternative to traditional GCSE courses. BTEC courses are assessed through on-going assignments with one of the compulsory units being externally examined. They are equivalent to one GCSE and are graded as pass, merit, distinction and distinction *. GCSEs

You will be taking GCSEs at the end of Year 11. These will be graded from 9 (highest result) down to 1 (lowest result). In many subjects coursework has been removed, so for the majority of subjects you take you will be assessed through exams at the end of Year 11. Practical subjects such as food & nutrition and art will still include practical elements, but expect some of the course to be examined.

Attendance

Missing school can seriously affect your long-term future. If you are not in class, your teacher cannot teach, help,

support or guide you through your courses. 90% attendance might sound very good, but.....

90% attendance means you are missing half a day of school every week. This equates to four weeks of school a

year. During your time at secondary school this would be half a school year missed putting you half a year behind

someone with full attendance.

80% attendance means missing one day of school per week. This means eight weeks per year or one full year

of schooling.

Research shows that a Year 11 student, who misses 17 days during the year, making their attendance 91%,

will get ONE GRADE LESS AT GCSE.

Option Subjects

The rest of this booklet provides guidance on making your choices and explains the subjects that you can choose

from.

You can see that there is a wide choice; some subjects you will be familiar with, others will be new to you.

We hope there will be something for everyone, whatever your ability, interests or future educational and career

plans!

Ebacc (English Baccalaureate)

The EBacc is a set of subjects at GCSE that keeps young people’s options open for further study and

future careers.

The EBacc is:

English language and literature

Mathematics

Science

Geography or history

Language

Attainment Standard pass - GCSE grade 4 or above in all

Strong pass - GCSE grade 5 or above in all

English

To count towards the English part of the EBacc, pupils need to take both English literature and English

language GCSE exams.

Science

Pupils need to take one of the following options:

GCSE combined science – pupils take 2 GCSEs that cover the 3 main sciences, biology, chemistry and physics

Triple sciences at GCSE – pupils take 3 GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics

EBacc impact

The EBacc is made up of the subjects which are considered essential to many degrees and open up lots of

doors. Many Universities look for students to have taken the Ebacc subjects, some Universities won’t accept

students who don’t have all of the Ebacc subjects.

Research shows that subjects students choose at GCSE determines their opportunities beyond school.

A study by the UCL Institute of Education shows that studying subjects included in the EBacc provides

students with greater opportunities in further education and increases the likelihood that a pupil will stay on

in full-time education.

Helping you to make the right choices! First Step

Considering your option subject choices. Think carefully about:

How you like to learn?

What subjects do you already like?

What subjects/courses do you need for your future?

It is important to have an idea of the route you would like to take, even if you are not sure of the

exact job just yet.

Do you want to go to University or go straight into a job?

Do you know what subjects and grades they require to take that route?

Which subjects do you like? Why?

Which subjects do you achieve well in? Why?

GCSE Mathematics

Why is “your course” important? Whether you like it or not, you will use some part of Mathematics every day for the rest of your life (even when you don’t even realise it!) The skills that solving Maths problems gives you are transferable to many occupations and careers, and is seen by some of the top employers as “the” qualification that showcases hard work, resilience and independence (as they know some people find it hard!)

Exam Board? AQA

What will I study? Over the 2 years you will learn to:

look for patterns and solve problems in a structured and concise way

calculate numerical problems accurately, showing all stages of working out

manipulate algebraic notation to find values and simplify expressions

work with shapes and measurements, determining key properties and using accurate methods to manipulate calculations or construct diagrams

handle data and analyse statistics to make reasoned assumptions and decisions

What skills will I need for this course? You will need resilience to complete tasks, and the drive to have a go at problems, even if you don’t necessarily know how you are going to get to the final outcome immediately. Most importantly you will need a strong work-ethic, as the best progress that is made by students in maths is by the ones who put the most time and effort in.

How will I learn? Maths lessons will continue to be as they have been in KS3, but there will be an even greater emphasis on trying to solve prob-lems independently and seeking guidance from your peers through constructive discussion. A mixture of independent, paired, and grouped work will form the basis of your GCSE course.

How will I be assessed? 100% Final Exam Paper 1: 1 ½ hrs non-calculator 33⅓% Paper 2: 1 ½ hrs calculator 33⅓% Paper 3: 1 ½ hrs calculator 33⅓%

How can I use this course after year 11 and beyond? A good qualification in Maths is seen as a clear indication of someone who perseveres until a suitable and accurate outcome is reached. A strong, higher grade, would allow you to continue Maths on to Post 16, and if successful there, possibly on to universi-ty. Mathematicians play a key role in many areas that you might not expect, such as astronomy, architecture and machine con-struction. Some of the more traditional occupations that you might associate with strong mathematicians are jobs in the financial sector like accountancy or banking, teaching, or engineering.
