Good Citizens are Go!

Across the school we have been focusing on the skills involved in embodying one of our school values – being a GOOD CITIZEN. For this week and next classes are unpacking and exploring the skills of problem solving in social settings. Teachers are making use of a range of resources and programmes to help this, e.g. Zone of Regulation, School Kit on Resilience, Sparklers, etc. Recently we have revisited with all students ways to successfully make our loose part play areas on the field work well for all, how to play positively in the bamboo forest and on the maypole. We are on the lookout for students putting these skills into action in the playground. Those spotted will be given a 'green ticket' to enter into our 'green ticket' draw. Let us know if you spot anyone too!

Paid Union Meetings

Te Horo School teachers who are members of NZEI Te Riu Roa will be attending one of the following paid union meetings during the afternoons of; Tuesday 29th June, Wednesday 30th June, or Friday 2nd July.

The purpose of these meetings is for teachers to discuss the priorities for the renegotiation of their collective agreement in 2022. Issues being discussed, such as school staffing levels, directly impact on the education of your children. These meetings are a critical component of the negotiation process and it is the legal right of all members to attend a meeting and have their say. While there will be some impact on the usual school programme that day, we have adjusted the programme to minimise disruption, and the school will remain open.

Lunchtime at the Library

We have set up the library as a space to be at lunchtimes when Nikki, our Library Assistant, is here (Tues-Fri). During Tuesday lunch time Nikki will host a Pokemon Trading Club (look out for an email about this shortly if your child is interested in joining), and on Thursday a Board Game club. We are currently finalising which of the remaining days will be a chess club and which will have craft activities available. If there are any parents/caregivers keen and able to lend a hand and support Nikki with the chess club and crafting, please make contact with us.

Reporting to Parents - Policy Review

Chess Competition Our chess players took to the boards recently to compete in the Horowhenua Regional Competition in Levin. To the rookies - who were all experts by the end of the day (including correcting their parents on the rules). To the juniors - who earned points and competed really well. To the intermediates - who had to play seniors for some of their games.

A special shout out and congratulations to Ethan (2nd in rookies); to Evan (2nd in juniors) and Albert (3rd in juniors) and to Christian (highest placed Te Horo intermediate player). Well done, ka rawe! Evan and Albert can now compete at Nationals as that was the Horowhenua Regional competition.

Bill, Evan, Ethan, Finn and Kobian all completed chess challenges during the day. And there was some amazing concentration from all players.

A special thank you to Nicolette for being there to help everyone understand what was going on and being the main coordinator on the day.

GRIP Leadership Conference - Monday 14th June Our Year 8s will be attending the GRIP leadership conference in Palmerston North on Monday 14th June. We ask that the students attending are at school by 7:20am, ready for a 7:30am departure. Likewise, at the end of the day, we expect the bus back at school at 3:45pm, so please make alternative pick up arrangements on this day. Your child will need to;

• Be dressed smart casual, wearing their Te Horo School polo shirt, fleece or jacket (there are a handful of shirts available to borrow from the office)

• Bring a packed morning tea and lunch, and a large drink of water

• Bring a pen and something to write on

• Have a suitable jacket for wearing in wet weather

• Wear fully enclosed shoes (no sandals or slip ons) Thank you to Mr Nolan who will be attending with the Year 8s. Mrs McMurchie will remain at school with the Year 7s.

We need your skills!

Are you a sewing whizz? Handy with a hammer? Fancy yourself as the next Jamie Oliver?

The highly anticipated Year 7&8 Technology Programme is coming up in week 8. We would love to have some extra pairs of hands to help us out with cooking, sewing or woodwork. Please contact Danielle, Peter or Rebecca to find out more, or if you would be willing to spend some time at school on Monday 21 to Wednesday 23 June.

The children will need a morning tea that they can slip into their pocket. They will also need to wear their Te Horo School polo shirt (limited items available to borrow from the office). Mrs McMurchie will be attending with the students that have permission to attend.

Be quick to quiz!

There are only three tables left for the quiz night so if you haven't booked your team of 8 on a table yet, get in quick! OR, if you’re single, and looking to mingle (purely in a quiz sense), we can put you in a combined team of like-minded quizlets. If you like The Chase, you’ll love the Te Horo School Quiz Night! Bookings can be made at the school office or email [email protected].

Recount of the Tough Guy and Gal Challenge by Charlie Heazlewood and George Crocker

Last week a group of students went up to Massey University to compete in a mud run challenge. It was a very well-hosted event. Thank you to all of our parents for providing transport and looking after us at the event. A big thank you to 1 Day for their sponsorship. The event itself was brilliantly set up and our highlight was the thick mud that was at least ankle deep - and in some places, it was deeper. A challenging and fun day all around.
