This will be the end of my first term as Principal of Fairfield High School and I have to say it has been a fantastic time! I am constantly amazed at the persistence and professionalism of staff to provide the best teaching and support for every student in the school, they are truly a wonderful team of people to work with. The students equally surprise me daily with their mature and insightful behaviour and comments and we are very proud of them. I would like to thank all of the staff and students for their effort and support in making Fairfield High School a great school and making my job so much easier and enjoyable. I would also like to thank the parent body for their support of the school and their children’s education, without your help our job would be much more difficult and the success of the students far less. I think we make a good team! Parents, we need your help now. Although the vast majority of students do the right thing every day there are some who are having some trouble getting things right

regularly. Can you ensure that your son/daughter is at school by 8.40am ready to be in class by 8.45am. This is critical to a good start to the day. Also encourage them to not linger around Neeta City or the surrounding streets before and after school. It is so easy to give the public the wrong impression about the students and the school when they are not where they are supposed to be – at school and in class! Similarly we want to project the right impression through the promotion of correct uniform. I would like your support in this area too. We look great but we could look better. It is important for us all to teach the students to value punctuality, responsibility, consideration and self-worth. The school plan is almost finalised and I would like to thank all the staff, parents and students who have provided valuable feedback as part of the planning process. We have finalised our three strategic directions, which are: 1. Aspirational, reflective, proactive and successful students 2. High performing, professional, collaborative and dynamic staff 3. Purposeful, authentic, inclusive and cohesive partnerships Progress towards the school plan will continue and a copy will be published on the school website at the beginning of Term 2. The school continues to have a strong focus on improving the student’s literacy and numeracy skills. The Equity Team is working hard on an intensive reading and writing program as well as continuing the push with Focus on Reading and a Numeracy initiative. Fairfield Network has a new Relieving Director Public Schools Ms Cathy Brennan, who I have met with to discuss the school plan and the directions the school wishes to take to make Fairfield High School an even better school. I look forward to working with Ms Brennan during an exciting time of change in the Department of Education and Communities. The enrolments in the Intensive English Centre have continued to climb and I have been impressed by the dedication and enthusiasm of the staff and the students for learning. I would like to welcome

Ms Zeynep Testoni as Relieving Deputy Principal in the I.E.C. until that position is filled permanently. We also have a new Head Teacher Welfare Ms Ann Coonan who will be looking after student wellbeing in the school. I would also like to thank Mr Sargeant and Ms Conray our Deputy Principals and the Executive Team for all their hard work in making the start of the year such a smooth transition. Their assistance and support has been invaluable to me as a new Principal. Year 12 mid-course exams are approaching rapidly and each student should be making every effort to do their best and to achieve the results they are capable of obtaining. Some hard work now and consistent study habits will pay off during the HSC examination period. It was very pleasing to see the Year 12 students make the most of their opportunities during the My Exit Program. Finally as we draw towards the end of term one I wish all our students and families a safe and happy holiday. See you all in term two! Charles Borg Principal Fairfield High School

YEAR 7 REPORT WITH MS. wilkinson

It has been lovely to welcome Year 7 into Fairfield High School. The students have settled in very well and are making many friends both within the year and in other year groups. Year 7 had a successful first day where they were introduced to various staff and given a personalised timetable which they were taught to read. Many activities have been keeping the Year 7 group very busy. Year 7 have participated at the school swimming carnival and performed very well. It was their first carnival and the students displayed pride in their house groups by participating in swimming events and cheering for their house teams. Students participated in the novelty events towards the end of the day and were enjoying the company of one another. At Fairfield High School we have kept the channels of communication between parents and teachers open by coordinating an informal ‘meet the parents’ afternoon which was held on Thursday 26th February in the library. The parents had the opportunity to meet and speak to their child’s teachers. The afternoon was a great success and I would like to thank Ms Isakov for her vision, direction and assistance in making the afternoon achievable. Year 7 proved to be a brave and fearless year group by having their vaccinations. They were very

courageous to undertake two needles in the one day. This is was a very successful day and I would like to thank Ms Coonan who organised a smooth passage and provided emotional support for the students on the day. The first formal assembly for Year 7 was held this term in Week 6 and this was run by the assistant year advisor Ms Lay who, spoke about settling into high school, purchasing a student diary,

respecting one another and personal hygiene. All these items are important and useful and should be implemented immediately. Peer support has been very effective and students have been observed participating

in their groups. The students have been respectful to their leaders and have been enjoying the activities that the leaders implement. This has been an opportunity for Year 7 to get to know their seniors and increase their experience within the school. Thank you Ms Brown for your coordination of peer support. Lastly, I wanted to send a message to Year 7 and to tell them to continue the hard work. The year has just begun and it will get busier. Students should plan and organise their time well. The homework

centre is opened from Tuesday to Friday 3-5pm and students should be utilising that space, teachers and resources within the library vicinity. Students, you should come and see Ms Lay or myself if you are having any difficulties or you just want to say hi.

YEAR 8 REPORT WITH Ms. hayes

Welcome back to Year 8 students and family. We are no longer the “newbies” or the babies of the school but we are now a role model. This fact should now be guiding our behaviours in 2015. Students returned to school on day 1, 29th January to be placed in new class groups, with new teachers and new peer groups. This year sees the addition of a language to the core subjects in which the students are studying; French or Spanish. There were happy faces and there were tears but this is a learning curve for all students and sometimes being out of your comfort zone pushes you and teaches you personal qualities about yourself. In Year 8 there are 5 classes, our Self Select Class; 8 Yellow, our mixed ability classes; 8 Blue, 8 Red and 8 Orange and our ESL class; 8 Green. Students no longer have a core teacher who they see for multiple subjects and Roll Call. Students will now have a separate teacher for each class/subject and for Roll Call. All Year 8 Roll Call rooms are in A – Block (Science Block) and as your Year Advisors; we set you the goal be in the right place at the right time. Roll Call starts at 8:45am and it is expected you are in the room seated before 8:50am. This follows through with all your classes. It is expected you are there no longer than 5 minutes after the previous period has finished. Roll Call rooms for Year 8 are:

End of Year Celebration During day one of Term 1, 29th January students were given the opportunity to vote for what behaviours warrant being allowed to go on the excursions and what behaviours excluded you from being allowed to go on the excursion. This excursion is a celebration of the positive behaviours and actions of Year 8 students. The students were also given the opportunity to vote on where they would like their end of year excursion/celebration to be. The following were voted by Year 8 students: The excursion/ celebration will be at CRONULLA BEACH and if you are suspended or receive 3 negative Sentral entries during one term you will be excluded from this celebration. Year 8 acknowledged their behaviours and their actions are a personal choice and they are responsible for their behaviours and actions. Each student should be thinking and striving to “CARE” when at Fairfield High School or representing Fairfield High School in the local community.

Goals for Term 2 and 2015 In the later part of Term 1, 2015 Year 8 was involved in a Year Assembly. Firstly they are to be commended on their efforts towards singing the National Anthem without backing music. The students did this with pride and sung the anthem “LOUD AND PROUD”. It was agreed by on Ms Hayes and Ms Rosewell as we will make this an event at each Year Assembly as it was amazing to see. From this assembly Year 8 were set the following goals: • TAKE RESPONSBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS, BE A LEADER NOT A FOLLOWER • LIMIT THE NUMBER OF NEGATIVE SENTRAL AIMS, AIM TO GIVE YOUR TEACHERS A POSITIVE

INCIDENT TO REPORT ON • CONTINUE TO COLLECT YOUR MERITS, 20 MERITS = BRONZE, 5 BRONZE = SILVER, 2 SILVER=

GOLD, 2 GOLD = DIAMOND

Support Networks At Fairfield High School we are blessed to have such a strong support network to support our students to be the best they can. YEAR 9 REPORT

WITH Mr. domenicos

Year 9 have settled in nicely to the school year. For the first time in their high school lives they have had the opportunity to choose some of their classes through the process of subject selection. Many of them chose but chose too quickly and ended up having to request changes to their initial selections. My advice to them at our first formal assembly was that for these processes they need to think carefully about what they want to do – and importantly – why they are choosing a particular subject. Is it because they think it will assist them in their future pathways or is it because they want to be with a particular group of friends? Is their choice realistic or will the subject be too difficult? These are questions that they must consider and reflect on as they move from Stage 4 to Stage 5 on their high school journey. Another question discussed at our assembly was the idea of being organised not just in terms of study but in terms of ergonomics (keeping their bags and desks tidy) and also how diet and attitude play a part in improving our learning and results. Remember Year 9, to see me if you would like a copy of the assembly Powerpoint presentation on organisational skills – as it will serve as an excellent reminder for the future. Mr Markoski has selected a group of Year 9 students to be a part of his Fast Forward program, which sees them off to UNSW on the evening Thursday 19th March where they will get a taste of Uni life and all that that entails. I will be interviewing the students upon their return and have some of their responses ready for you at our next newsletter publication. Good Luck to that group!

Finally a special mention must go out to Janavee Gurunathen who has attained a tremendous achievement in being presented Fairfield High School’s first ever Gold Certificate through our Merit Award system. This is especially great as Janavee has gotten this far on the Merit Pyramid so quickly. I am sure that she will achieve the highest honour of a Diamond Award before her HSC is through, so congratulations Janavee! Congratulations also to those other students that received awards at our recent assembly – many of whom were our Special Needs students. Onwards and upwards Year 9, congratulations to you all for completing another term of high school – all the best!

YEAR 10 REPORT WITH mr. lieu

So the final year as juniors of the school is finally upon us. The first term has flown by with only a few weeks left. As well as focusing on study, many students have remained involved in extra-curricular activities that they have taken up in earlier years, while others are finding new avenues for enjoyment.

We have two students in Year 10, Karl Schuch & Kristina Stevanovic that have volunteered to become Blood Ambassadors of the school. They will be involved in the Blood Ambassadors program run by the Red Cross Blood Service. Their roles would involve encouraging their peers to donate blood. If you are interested in becoming a blood donor, make sure you ask Karl or Kristina for more details.

I hope all have gained valuable knowledge and information from the year assembly. There were key presenters presenting different topics to assist you in your schooling life and beyond. I would like to thank Ms Fitzpatrick for giving a presentation on resilience and various Year 12 students for giving up their time to share their experiences about the transition from Year 10 to the senior years. Resilience is an important trait to have and must be developed over time. It is the ability for a person to bounce back or recover from a difficult situation. That situation may be achieving a poor mark in an exam or an obstacle in life. We can’t always “win”, but we can always learn from a situation.

“The greatest glory in living

lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”

― Nelson Mandela

Finally, as this is your final year before senior studies, this is a great opportunity for you to reflect on your academic studies. It is time to think about what you enjoy doing and what you don’t. Think about what aspirations and careers you would like to pursue in life. Find out information on how you can achieve those goals. There is a lot of support and information for you to access. On that note, continue working towards these goals and continually improve yourself. Become the strongest version of yourself.

YEAR 11 REPORT WITH Mr. jackson

This term appears to have flown by (as they so often do). The only difference for the year group is that there are now only two terms left before officially becoming Year 12 students. While most of the year group have been studying hard and maturing as academically focused learners, there are some students still struggling to find their feet. Some tips that may help you, include the following: 1. You need your sleep in decent quantities! So avoid deciding to watch that second film on the net as the clock ticks past midnight – go to sleep! 2. Yes Facebook can be lovely for discovering the latest happy snaps from someone’s last party, or learning that some dude you kind of know just missed

their train, or that blah, blah, blah… When viewed in large doses, Facebook allows us to become fantastic procrastinators. This can be fun, but is also quite disastrous for developing the self-discipline required to revise notes for exams and assignments. Take it in moderation folks. 3. Keep yourself as organised as possible so that

you have a pleasant balance between the time demanded of you for study as well as having enough energy for the part-time job you have, the hobbies you follow on the weekend and some quiet time to relax. Use a diary or electronic planner to keep on top of things. 4. Be honest with yourself about what you can achieve and then break

down your longer term goals into sizeable portions. You can’t conquer the world in a day, or a year. That takes a lifetime of striving. 5. Remember to have a good chuckle when things go wrong, because it’s a guarantee that some things will – disappointing subject results, the love of your life deciding to part ways with you, the boss getting cranky with you…the list might seem endless sometimes, so you may as well be laughing at the face of gloom as it will pass eventually. Many of you appear to be coping well so far with senior school life. If things are a bit tricky though, don’t be shy to ask your teachers for

extra help, or the counsellors, or me! For the moment, keep up the momentum folks – you’ll thank yourself for it later.

YEAR 12 REPOrt WITH Ms. lykourezos

It has been a strong start for Year 12 in 2015. Students are making steady progress in all KLAs and have settled in well. As students are aware it is a very busy year with fundraising under way and a number of other school activities taking place. The Year 12 committee group are working countless hours to ensure they provide the best experience to their cohort. This group is made up of vibrant and enthusiastic students who contribute to a number of extracurricular activities across all facets of the school. During the school holidays fundraising started with a Bunnings BBQ at Villawood. It was a hot day near the BBQ, but we managed to do well, due to student’s happy and cheerful attitude towards customers. Overall, the students involved represented Year 12 and the school with distinction. Thank you to all those people who showed their support. Year 12 jerseys are in! And a second batch is in the process of being ordered. The jerseys look great and add a little class to the cohort. The jerseys are an integral part of the student body and as a year advisor I look forward to seeing students wear them within our school community. The jerseys bring integrity to the Year 12 group, as they expose their leadership presence within the school community. Excellent to see that majority of students did purchase a jersey and are wearing them with pride.

Congratulations to Joshua Suli-Ruka for his state representation in European Handball, and also for his selection into the SSW Open’s Rugby Union squad for 2015. Joshua will soon compete at a number of SSW regional trials, all the best and good luck to Josh. Year 12 are going to run more Bunning’s BBQs over the next couple of terms, as the first encounter was such a success. The BBQ’S are on the following dates: 19th April - a week before Anzac Day, 9th May –Mother Day, 8th June – The Queen’s Birthday. We are also looking at having a select amount of Year 12 students selling chocolates. Please see Ms Lykourezos if you are interested. If you are free, please come and support. Any contribution will be greatly appreciated.

I expect all Year 12 students to contribute ideas and efforts towards raising money as the funds will be contributing to ensure that your time at school is enjoyable and memorable. We will also be having a weekly meeting on Thursdays for those students who wish to be further involved. The year book is in the process of being finalized, we are going with Rockstar year books. The set price is $50 for a hard cover copy and must be paid at the front office with receipt given to Miss Lykourezos. If you would like to be involved please see Amy Tran. To Year 12, I encourage you to remain focused, as before you know it you will in the Auditorium sitting your HSC exam. I hope you have a safe and fulfilling holiday and come to school with a “do your best” attitude towards your studies.

SUPPORT UNIT REPORT WITH mr. grech

In the Support Unit this term, students have been enthusiastically engaging in activities both inside and outside of the classroom. Our Kitchen Rules! In Home Economics this term, students have been learning how to choose, use and care for kitchen equipment safely. Using regional harvests from the Support garden and food nutrition models, they have prepared a range of delicious meals to enjoy.

Here is a sample recipe from our top chefs for you to enjoy at home: Simple Spaghetti Bolognese Recipe 1 tablespoon of cooking oil 1 medium brown onion, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 teaspoon dried oregano 800g lean beef 2 tablespoons of tomato paste 400g of chopped tomatoes 1 cup of stock 1 teaspoon of castor sugar Step 1: Heat oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook onion and garlic for 3 to 4 minutes or until onion has softened. Increase heat to medium-high. Add oregano. Cook for 1 minute. Add mince. Cook, stirring with a wooden spoon to break up mince, for 8 to 10 minutes or until browned. Step 2: Add tomato paste. Cook for 1 minute. Add tomatoes, stock and sugar. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to medium-low. Cook, partially covered for 30 to 40 minutes or until thick. Step 3: Enjoy. Lettuce Talk Gardening In addition to providing opportunities to grow, cook and eat food together, the Support Unit’s garden enables students to integrate learning across the curriculum. In Science for example, S2 students have collected garden leaves to explore the seasonal stages of the plant life cycle. Students in S2 have also used informal and formal units to measure garden beds, pathways and a pumpkin ‘pi’.

Mrs Bianca and students from S1 have been using the garden to learn about the importance of human action in maintaining a balance in nature, as well as developing knowledge about weeding, sowing and pruning plants. To meet the costs of running the garden, the crops that students have sowed from seed will be sold at a very reasonable price to the school community.

The Sound of Support In Music, students have been studying the instruments of the orchestra and learning to identify their technical names, as well as distinguish the sounds that each instrument produces. They have also been learning how to play selected instruments so they can perform pieces of music together as a class.

Getting into the Swim of Things. Congratulations to all of the Year 7 and 8 students who attended the school swimming carnival, either taking part in events or cheering from the sideline to support their house teams.

YEAR 10 STUDENT OF TERM

Jayda Matavesi Jayda has been recognised for her commitment towards her studies and dedication to many other aspects of school. Jayda is always ready and willing to rise up to the call of duty and assist in whatever task that needs to be completed. She plays a vital role on the school’s basketball team and is a mentor to the younger players of the game. She is an advocate of the school's CARE code and a distinct role model to his peers. She has completed all class tasks and assessment tasks to the best of her abilities. Overall, Jayda is a mature, diligent student who consistently displays excellent application to her studies. Mr Lieu Year 10 Advisor

YEAR 11 STUDENT OF TERM

Mathew Nguyen & Nelson Phan Student of the term is an interesting accolade. Sometimes it is awarded for a single, outstanding endeavour and sometimes for the awesome way in which a student has consistently contributed to the school community. Most students in our year group go about their work without looking for praise, which reflects a maturing of attitudes towards why we do what we do in life. Regardless of whether it is looked for or not though, a mature effort should be recognised. As such, it gives me great pleasure to announce that both Mathew Nguyen and Nelson Phan are Students of the Term for term one! Their consistent hard work and perseverance have been noted by many teachers. Both are gentlemen who have taken a strong interest in pursuing improved academic results. They get on well with their peers and teachers and also see the value of acting in a mature manner for the benefit of others in the community. Their interests are varied which has given them a broad-minded approach to the different people who make up our year group and our community. As hard working and considerate senior members of the school, they have an influence as role models beyond Year 11 as junior students will also observe how they act and learn accordingly. Well done gentlemen and keep up the good work.

ANDREWS (nee DEAN-DICKEY), Roslyn 1962 – 1967 FGHS Initially High School was very daunting for me. I was younger than most of the girls, small in stature and certainly not as mature as some of the girls in my class. I had an elder sister who also attended the school and she was always a great support. I can remember the number of tedious rules which tend to overpower a shy person (worried in case you did something wrong). In fact you couldn’t help but do ‘something wrong’… I know there were a lot of tough girls in my class but from where I was sitting it appeared that some teachers were always looking for something/someone to ‘pick on’… In later years I become a teacher myself and was always very sensitive to the approach of teachers to children, even the tough ones… I had some good friends who stood up for me in the playground if needed. We enjoyed each other’s company. The first four years were a bit of a blur at High school and I struggled with the school work. I know I enjoyed Fridays as we were able to buy our lunch at the Tuck Shop. (A big treat) Our younger sister joined us three years later at high school and as sisters we all played in a girls’ basketball team (now called netball) each Saturday afternoon of summer in Fairfield. During 5th and 6th Form we forged strong friendships as the classes were smaller and our interests similar although we came from such varied backgrounds. As we were the first 6th Form it was important that we succeed and the teachers put a lot of effort into our learning. In particular I remember Mrs Saville, our art mistress as well as our English and Geography teachers. To complete our major works for Art a couple of nights we were there till midnight working on them. This was unheard of in those days. Most of us got through and went our separate ways to forge a career. I was lucky enough to attend Sydney Kindergarten Teachers College, where I studied Early Childhood Education in a very forward thinking Tertiary Institution. Unfortunately the campus was at Waverly. From Fairfield, or really Smithfield, where we lived, it took me over two and a half hours each way, five hours a day in travel. I remember sitting on the train thinking most other students would be finishing their assignments by now and I’m still not home! After graduating I taught for two years at Cheltenham Pre-School. By that time we had a second car in the family and I was able to drive to work, as again it was a long way from home. We moved to Wentworthville during that time.

I also had the opportunity to travel to New Guinea with a Christian organisation called Australian Board of Missions (ABM). After observing the great need for education in such countries I knew that I would at some stage leave Sydney and take up a position in less advantaged schools. So in 1973 I accepted a position as Teacher in-charge of the Pre-School in Normanton, far North Queensland. It was the first Indigenous Pre School in North Queensland funded by the Commonwealth Government and run under the auspices of the Anglican Diocese of Carpentaria. They were wonderful times and an extremely fast learning curve. I learnt to do without although I had the best building in town, I learnt to improvise and I learnt to rely on others who in other circumstances I would not have associated with. A humbling experience and I formed some long lasting friendships that continue today.

It was in Normanton that I met my husband who managed cattle stations. After our wedding in Sydney we returned north to live on a cattle station 110km from Normanton. We had electricity for ten hours a day from a generator, there was no phone and I was the only women on the station for nearly two years. Our two sons were born during those five years. In 1980 we moved to a cattle station in the Northern Territory and managed cattle stations in the northwest Northern Territory (near Kununurra WA) for over twenty eight years. We finally got a regular phone system when our daughter was born in 1986. There was no TV or radio reception either. However it was a great way to raise our children. They became strong and independent. All their primary education was on School of the Air from Katherine with lessons and correspondence coming on the mail plane once a week if you were lucky and one half hour radio lesson daily. Technology has certainly improved Distance Education over the recent years. As a family we spent eighteen years on Distance Education with each child heading off to boarding school in Sydney at twelve years of age. Our two sons and our daughter have all returned to the Northern Territory and either manage cattle properties or work for pastoral businesses in Katherine. We have seven beautiful grandchildren some of whom have started their education through Distance Education as well, be it much improved. The internet brought us into the 20th century… When we moved to the Barkly area of the NT in 2009 I was fortunate enough to go back to teaching in indigenous schools. Both my husband and I are semi- retired at Dundee Beach in the NT. He spends some time working as an environmental manager for a large cattle property near Elliott, NT and I from time to time work as a Family Educator in Indigenous schools in the Barkly area of the NT. Looking back over the years I think one of the strongest lessons I learnt was to respect people in all areas and of all capabilities. We all have much to offer. Australia won’t stay the fortunate country we have if we don’t respect it and work for it. I have grown much stronger and more outspoken a long way from that shy girl that started high school in 1962. Good luck in celebrating 60 years. I know many people have put much work into organising the celebrations. Thank You.

AYERS, Ron 1959 – 1963 FBHS I started high school after missing the last 6 months of primary school and I doubted my ability to undertake what I perceived as the ‘harder’ language courses. I therefore opted for the manual arts stream and in the long-run this was a useful and rewarding direction for me. Initially I thought I would probably become a carpenter or something similar but as I achieved reasonably well at school I then changed my aspirations to architecture, and finally civil engineering. Memories of school focus on my fellow students and the staff. Up to Intermediate Certificate I was in a class where most of the students couldn’t wait to leave school and get a job and hence there was not much focus on academic matters. Girls, music and weekend activities were the main issues. In my senior school years I was in a group which had a number of very bright students so the academic competition was always strong. As I progressed at school I became more interested in sport (rugby union, cricket and basketball) but I was always a pretty average sportsperson. The teachers were an interesting bunch. There was a real mixture from crusty ex-service personnel from the Second World War through to young Teachers

College graduates. The ones that really had a hard time were the few female staff that passed through a school with only male students and a 95% male staff population. When I was in my senior school years, John Brewer and myself wanted to study Mathematics II Honours but the only way we could do this was to travel to the Deputy Headmasters’ house (half way across Sydney) on a Sunday morning to study it with his son! Our supportive parents faithfully did the drive every week. As a consequence of my Leaving Certificate results I obtained a traineeship with the Department of Main Roads to study engineering at university. I opted for the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and studied full time for 5 years to attain a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Civil Engineering. A few years later I returned to UNSW to undertake a research Master of Engineering Degree.

Having been supported in my undergraduate studies by main Roads, I was obligated to work for them for a few years after graduation. I worked in a variety of Works Offices throughout NSW, learning road and bridge construction skills and managing reasonably large day labour workforces. I then had a couple of years in the Materials and Research section in Sydney. After leaving Main Roads I worked as Construction Engineer at Campbelltown City Council for a few years and was responsible for managing various types of building and construction works and supervising contract works. In 1976 I moved to Toowoomba, Queensland to take up a post as Lecturer in Highway, Traffic and Construction Engineering at the Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education (DDIAE). In 1978 I was appointed Head of Civil Engineering, a position I held for over a decade. The DDIAE transitioned to a university in the early 1990’s, becoming the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) in 1992. During the 1990’s and 2000’s I held various positions in the Faculty of Engineering and Surveying, including Associate Dean (Academic), Deputy Dean and Dean. By the time of my retirement from USQ in late 2013 I had reached the position of Professor of Civil Engineering and had served at this organisation for over 37 years. In my retirement I have been appointed as an Honorary Professor at USQ and I still undertake research and teaching a couple of days per week. I married in 1969 soon after finishing my Bachelor of Engineering degree, and by the time we left Campbelltown in 1976 we had three young children. A fourth child was born in 1978. My career path and my family are closely linked. Several life defining changes in career were strongly influenced by family considerations. For example, the move from NSW to country Queensland was as much about change of lifestyle for a young family as it was about job prospects. My wife and I have been married for 45 years and our 4 children all have good careers and are happily married. We now have 10 grandchildren, including 2 living in USA and 4 who live in Poland. Consequently our overseas travel is mainly directed towards Europe and the USA! Another aspect of my life which is very important to me is my faith. I am a Christian and in practical terms this manifests itself in my involvement in church activities of service and teaching. I believe that it is important for each of us to not only work through what we believe about God but also why we believe it. This was a challenge I first experienced in late high school and my faith still continues to be worked out and grow. Words of wisdom Life on earth is a short journey and we need to live each day to the fullest. It is easy to keep looking forward to the next big thing but we need to enjoy the present, not regretting the past or wasting time worrying about a future which might never eventuate. This doesn’t mean we don’t plan and work towards a future but it does mean we have to hold our plans loosely and be ready to accept the twists and turns that life takes. One thing I have learnt is that you can learn an awful lot form other people, no matter who they are. Everyone has different life experiences and as others share their experiences with you it provides an opportunity to enrich your own life. We are created with two ears and one mouth, so listen twice as much as you talk!
