Year 6 Spring 2 Newsletter…. ASTON LODGE PRIMARY SCHOOL Curriculum Topics: We will be continuing our history topic on World War II. This half term children will find answers to the following questions: Who was in charge, how did he rule and what impact did this have? What impact did the Blitz have on the UK? What was it like to be evacuated during WW2? What impact did food rationing have on families? What impact did clothes rationing have on families? Was it fair that children were evacuated? Is it fair that some people were sent to concentration camps? Can you think of any similarities between the holocaust and events happening in the world today? Who was Anne Frank and what impact did she have? When did WW2 end and how did people celebrate? To support our historic learning of the 1940s, Year 6 will be reading Letters from the Lighthouse by Emma Carroll. We will be writing a variety of genres including descriptive writing on settings and characters, a biography of Anne Frank and a range of formal and informal letters. In maths, we will be continuing to learn the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages and also be working on algebra. Additionally, we will be continuing with our DT project on Anderson Shelters. PE TIMES Year 6 will have two sessions of PE on Mondays and Fridays. Please ensure your child has their indoor kit, consisting of dark shorts and a white t-shirt plus their outdoor kit – trainers and track suit as we try to have PE lessons outside as long as weather permits. Children with pierced ears will need to be able to take out their own earrings or alternately not come in earrings on P.E. days. Long hair will need to be tied back with a bobble. PE kit needs bringing to school on a Monday and left in school until Friday as occasionally PE times have to be changed. Children unable to participate in PE, must bring a note from home.

WW2? • What impact did food rationing have on

HOMEWORK

Homework comprises of learning weekly spellings, reading (please see below), practising recalling/ learning X tables and a mix of maths and reading homework from the revision guides. Topic optional homework based on our topic can be found on our Class Page on our website.

READING HOMEWORK

It is a basic expectation that your child will read at least 3 times a week (reading comprehension homework will be counted towards this). Your child will be expected to read three mini booklets each three pages long and answer at least nine pages of questions, in their 60 minutes reading SAT’s test in May. Therefore, they really need regular practise at reading to increase their reading speed as well as their comprehension skills.

SPELLING

Spellings will be given on a Friday and tested the following Friday. Spellings will be linked to a spelling rule or they will be words from the year 5/6 spelling list. It is important that your child knows how to read and spell the words given but equally as important he/she knows how to use the words within a context i.e. what each word means and how it is used within a sentence.

What a fantastic time the Year 6s had at Clifton School’s climbing wall! Two of our girls made record breaking times and have been invited to take part in the very first Wickersley Partnership Trust Primary Climbing Team. This annual competition is the highlight climbing event for schools in South Yorkshire and last year they had 601 children competing in total. The qualification round will consist of 8 specifically set boulder problems. Good Luck to Alicia and Lexie!

Family Workshops/Assemblies this term:

Come and join us in school to see the fabulous Anderson Shelters the children are making in DT. We hope they will be complete by the last week of term for you to pop in to have a look – more details to follow.

School trips this term:

As part of our topic, we have invited in a local expert on the topic. The children will have the opportunity to see and hold genuine WW2 artefacts.

As always, I have an open-door policy so please pop in to see me in a morning or straight after school especially if the matter needs dealing with urgently. Alternately please do not hesitate to contact me via class dojo. I always respond to these messages – although this may be not be until
