Information Evening

I n School I am Learning…. Term: Autumn Term 1 Class: Year 6S

Literacy To develop comprehension skills through weekly comprehension activities such as Guided Reading, I ndependent Reading, Reciprocal Reading and written tasks, To study stories f rom other cultures and write stories in the style of another culture, to learn poems f or perf ormance and to study and write poems f rom other cultures, to understand and use brackets, alliteration, similes, ellipses, antonyms and synonyms, to learning f ocus spellings f or weekly tests.

Numeracy- To solve weekly investigations, Place Value in 6 digit numbers, To add and subtract using column methods, To solve word problems involving multiple steps, to name parts of a circle and fi nd circumf erence and area of a circle and semi-circle, to classif y quadrilaterals, to revise angles round a point and fi nd complex missing angles, to revise long multiplication using decimals including amounts of money, to fi nd equivalent f ractions, to compare and order f ractions with unrelated denominators, to fi nd unit and non unit f ractions of amounts.

Art – Artist Study Claude Monet

To explore impressionism, Monet’s landscape paintings, Monet’s haystack series of paintings, Monet’s paintings of cities and work produced in his later years at his garden

Science Staying Alive

To understand and recognise the f unction of some of the parts of the circulatory system, to understand the need f or a healthy balanced diet and excerise, to explain the eff ect of drugs on the body using data analysis to support explanations.

Geography

Coasts – To be taught by Mr Cowen. To study a coastal environment f ocusing on signifi cant coastal f eatures. To study the impact of erosion and tourism on a coastal town in the UK.

French – Weekly lesson taught with French Teacher – Madame Hunt.

Computing – We are web developers

To create a page f or the school website off ering advice on all aspects of safe responsible use

RE – Gif ts f rom God and Other Faiths To know the account of creation and its meaning, to know why God made us and that he called us to care f or his creation, to learn about St Francis and St Vincent de Paul. To refl ect on other religions and identif y the similarities and diff erences between Christianity and Hinduism.

PE –Gymnastics and Net/ Wall Games. Gymnastics – Matching, mirroring, contrasting and working together. Netball – to develop throwing, catching, shooting, pivoting skills and to know the positions and rules of a 7 a side

Numeracy – Group children by ability

Literacy – Mixed ability with class teacher

Reading

Writing Spelling Comprehension

• Read a wide variety of reading material for a minimum of 15 – 20 minutes a day.

• Reading record should be signed and dated by a parent. You can also leave a comment if you wish, but this isn’t necessary.

Spellings

• Grouped according to an assessment test.

• Focus on key spelling patterns.• Practised at home on a daily basis.• Children will be given new spellings

on Friday and will be tested on a Friday.

Homework• Across Upper Key Stage 2 literacy and numeracy homework

will be given on alternate weeks.• Homework will be given out on a Friday and is due in on the following Friday.• Homework will always be related to the previous learning

objectives• Is there to consolidate learning• Ongoing Learning Logs – Topic is related to curriculum area.• Should be neatly presented• Handed in on time

Responsibility

• Answering phones at lunchtime• Giving out the registers• Giving out the fruit to KS1• School Council members• Eco-committee• Differing classroom roles

SATs• In Year 6 children do their SATs

• Children prepare for these tests throughout the year

• Year 6 pupils are provided with a broad and balanced curriculum.

• Appropriate intervention is provided for some children

• All year 6 pupils will be offered differentiated booster classes after Christmas

• SATs meeting will be provided for all Y6 parents/carers in Spring Term 1
