Listening and Speaking (response)Conjunctions (and, but, because, or, so)Prepare a poster or write on the board examples of compound and simple sentences. Explain and discuss the difference between them. Circle the conjunctions in each compound sentence. Read the examples through as a class adding emphasis when reading the conjunction. Using the previous examples (or new ones) of compound sentences blank or rub out the conjunction replacing it with a full stop. Then have the students see if they can identify the correct conjunction for each sentence. *Note- the conjunctions selected, the examples and the resources are suggestions only. If they don’t meet the needs of students please change them.Modelled/Class dictated writing Display the shared text and draw the students’ attention to how the letter is structured e.g.

Greeting Dear.....Introduction Are you well? I want to tell you....Body I like to....Conclusion What do you like to do....Ending From,Signature Hanif

Model writing a letter back to Wafi about an indoor activity that you enjoy doing (or this could be based on one of the students’ favourite indoor activities). Demonstrate how to respond to Wafi’s questions in the first part of the letter. Try to include a compound sentence e.g. Dear Wafi,Thank you for your letter. I am well. School is going well for me. I haven’t played chess before but I would like to learn how. In my spare time I like to …

(Modelling the use of questions to scaffold the content of the letter could be used for lower ability classes e.g. what do you like to do in your spare time? Who do you do it with? Where do you do it? When do you do it? Why do you do it?)
